  • Hockney is viewing his massive painting Bigger Trees near Warter in a warehouse he has rented before it goes up on public display at The 2007 Royal Academy Summer Show. One of the inspirations for the picture was The Isenheim altarpiece, a Crucifixion by Grunewald he’d recently seen - hence my question about The Gothic. Instead he talks about his Bradford childhood, and the million miles to Los Angeles! Later in the year The Royal Academy expresses an interest in mounting a large solo show, for 2012. Hockney was keen to fill it with large new works, for which he would need a much larger space to make and view the work. He rents and converts a space in the same warehouse block, but three times larger, which he calls the Atelier.
The 2012 exhibition was the second most popular show in The Royal Academy’s history, second only to Monet. Hockney called it ‘A Bigger Picture’, giving it the same title as my film which had come out in 2009!

This video is an outtake from David Hockney: A Bigger Picture, an award-winning documentary by filmmaker Bruno Wollheim.

Filmed over three years with unprecedented access, A Bigger Picture captures Britain’s most beloved painter at work. David Hockney’s return from California to paint the East Yorkshire landscape of his childhood - outside, in all weathers, through the seasons - culminates in the largest picture ever made outdoors. It’s an inspiring story of a painter in creative dialogue with nature and photography, and a revealing portrait of Britain’s most popular and celebrated artist.
“This wonderful film … will be of lasting importance for future generations who want to understand Hockney’s art.” Saturday Review, BBC Radio 4
“Bruno Wollheim’s portrait of this forthright magus is an unqualified, life-enhancing joy from start to finish.” - The Sunday Times
“This film may well be the best anyone will ever make about Hockney’s process.” - The Times, London.
“As gently hypnotic and fulfilling as one of Hockney’s own works.” - Time Out
“This impressive documentary is almost cinematic in its scope… both majestic and intimate” - The Observer

When I moved to a different country, 18 years ago, the light and landscape was so different from that which had previously been inspired my painting. Thanks to Hockney I managed to find my way back to painting and approach this new landscape with a fresh vision, thanks, David.

This series is great. You all did a wonderful job capturing Mr. Hockney everyday life as a painter. How I would love to talk with him about life and painting.

Thanks Jesse, I'm really glad you're enjoying them. David is an extraordinary person. Very present, in the moment. The more provisional the better.
It seemed such a waste of really interesting material I didn't have room to fit in the main documentary. Please spread the word, subscribe if you haven't and urge friends to watch the doc which is the only way this enterprise is staying afloat! Best, Bruno

@@colugapictures7529 in my TH-cam feed. I have been watching David TH-cam videos for good while. I'm in my art studio now watching and looking at my paintings before I start painting. I hope you all will do another one in the near future.
