Ganga aka Ganges has her origin in Gangotri Glacier ( Gomukh at Garhwal Himalayas. Uttarakhand. Usually known as Dev Bhoomi ). Ganga River is called the life line of India because it is vital in supporting the agricultural economy of the country. A majority of people in India are engaged in agricultural employment and, hence, depend upon river waters for irrigation. The Ganges or Ganga is a trans-boundary river of Asia which flows through India and Bangladesh. River Ganga is the third largest river in the world by the amount of water that flows through it. The ancient civilizations in India, China, Egypt and Mesopotamia have flourished due to large rivers that provided water for agriculture over millennia. The Ganga River, was known as the Ganges under British rule. For ages, the river Ganga has been an integral part of Indian spirituality, a river that gives a sense of belonging and pride to the people of India. Growing cities in India, China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh are dependent on Himalayan waters. As climate change and other human influences affect the snow and ice, human and natural communities in downstream areas will need to adapt.
    Geography of River Ganga :
The longest river in India, flowing from the Mighty Himalayas Mountains to the Bay of Bengal. The river has the second greatest water discharge in the world, and its basin is the most heavily populated in the world with over 400 million people living in it. The Ganges flows more than 2704 kilometers (1,680 miles). For nearly a billion Hindus in India and beyond, Ganga is more than a river. It is the extension of the divine - Lord Shiva. Being the most sacred river to the Hindus, Ganga is also a lifeline to millions of Indians who live along its course. 15km from the source through Bhojbasa is Gangotri, and further descends through Harsil, Uttarkashi, Surendranagar, Devprayag, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi (aka Kasi and Banaras ), Patna, Bhagalpur and flows into Bay of Bengal. Ganga takes her name from the confluence of two of its main tributaries, Alaknanda and Bhagirathi at Devprayag. Ganga is known for the medicinal properties, since it contains certain minerals. Also in the long stretch of Gangas channel in himalayas, the river flows through medicinal plants and shrubs. Ganga is named as Padma in Bangladesh. For Indians it is most commonly known as Ma Ganga - Mother Ganga. Ganga Aarti is performed during dawn and dusk in major religious sites like Gangotri, Rishikesh, Haridwar and Varanasi. For Westerners, it is the Ganges.
Ganga basin is the largest river basin in India in terms of catchment area, constituting 26% of the country's land mass (8,61,404 Sq. km) and supporting about 43% of its population (448.3 million as per 2001 census). The basin covers 11 states viz., Uttarakhand, U.P., M.P., Rajasthan, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal and Delhi. The tallest dam of India, Tehri Dam is built across river Ganga and this dam spoils the natural flow of Ganga.
Ganga was declared a national river by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2008 in order to achieve the objectives of the Ganga Action Plan, initiated by PM Rajiv Gandhi in 1985.
    Threats to the Ganges:
Pollution, Global Warming / Rising Temperature, and excessive use via unregulated tubells. A court has declared River Ganga as a legal "person" in an effort to save it from pollution. Uttarakhand is prone to flash floods and landslides and the disaster prompted calls by environment groups for a review of power projects in the ecologically sensitive mountains. The government should stop building hydropower projects / hydropower dams in the fragile ecosystem. Uttarakhand encountered Glacier Burst / Glacier Break ( Nanda Devi Glacier burst ) on 7th February 2021 in Raini Village - Joshimath Uttarakhand's Chamoli district. It damaged hydropower plant at NTPC Tapovan. Flash Flood happens frequently and it is a threat for local residents.
    Rejuvenation of Ganga:
The Vision for Ganga Rejuvenation constitutes restoring the wholesomeness of the river defined in terms of ensuring “Aviral Dhara” (Continuous Flow”), “Nirmal Dhara”(“Unpolluted Flow”), Geologic and ecological integrity. In addition to this there are other projects like Namami Gange - National Mission for Clean Ganga, Save Ganga Movement - A widespread Gandhian non-violent movement supported by saints and popular social activists. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Art of Living is working with their volunteers for Revival of River Ganga. Parmarth Niketan is also working on small projects related to revival of Ganga.
