There's a guy in a different video comparing Dark Side of the Moon releases' sound including what he called the SA-CD version. No, he was playing the regular CD layer. With SACD, are we talking DSD quality? Apparently that is 99.999999% as good as hearing the master tape in the studio (if mastered well). Check out PS Audio's Paul on his Octave Records and DSD Studios channel.
Some SACDs are recorded in DSD, some are from PCM masters and others are based on analogue recordings. Except for some early releases, SACDs are from audiophile labels and they usually have all the technical information in the booklet. Whether an SACD player is really DSD is another matter. Some high end machines and early Sonys use pure DSD DACs, other players will convert the music to PCM at some point, most modern players use some kind of Delta-Sigma conversion. I don't think it's worth getting hung up about it, the important question to me is 'do they sound better than CDs?', the answer is yes (most of the time).
@@Grrrr3FKAGrrrrGrrrrGrrrrmost DACS don't support DSD. So conversion to PCM is essential. All the Sony Blu-ray or 4K Blu-ray players with SACD support can bitstream DSD or convert to PCM and output. It's still bit perfect so I wouldn't get hung up on it like you say.
I've recently bought a couple of newer (re)releases for anywhere inbetween $20 to $30. Two discs by Isao Tomita (Planets and Pictures at an exhibition) plus the classic Fleetwood Mac - Rumours and Keith Jarrett - The Köln Concert. And if you want to go really cheap there's Jamie Cullum's Twentysomething and Nick Drake's A Treasury. Those can be had for as little as $5. I do wish there was some modern jazz or electronica available. Most of the releases seem to be Rock for 40 year old dads, ancient Jazz or Classical music. And I'm way too young for most of those. :P
A bunch of promotion is what gives. I noticed the same thing and almost bailed out. Pumping a James Guthrie surround mix of Pink Floyd is misdirected. I have DSOTM, WYWH, and Animals …and they are all uninspiring in surround.
I thought THE ZOMBIES SACD was a bit weak and not because it was mono, while DARK SIDE has a so-so CD layer, but the 5.1 mix has several errors. Hope the 12-track Dolby Atmos version is better.
