I was at this race. Great memories. Miss the carefree days of the 70s.

The winner, I'm pretty sure, was Mark Enyeart. I think I remember seeing that race where he led wire to wire.

In 1972,the USA should have entered Wohlhuter,Mann,Black, and Evans as a 4 x400 team instead of just vacating the title.

They weren't allowed to. They had already made their declaration of six "possibles" for the relay.

In the late 1970's UCTC (University of Chicago track club) had the greatest squad of half milers in the world. The coach was Ted Haydon (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Haydon) They repeatedly broke the 2 mile (4x1/2) relay record, often with Wohlhuter. Rick was one of the many athletes that never got to compete in the Olympics because of the political cancellations. Jimmy Carter stopped the USA from going to USSR in 1980. And the USSR didn't come to LA in 1984. My hope is the Olympics can be held out to be a symbol fellowship rising above political statement, open to all the athletes of the world. I still own the 1980 t-shirt mourning this cancellation. I lived across the street from Stagg field and when I was a 13 year old high school freshman and got to train on the same track as Rick. My older brother was a much more accomplished runner, and has spent many years supporting Chicago track and field.

@@gary1961 And he also competed in the OG in 1972, falling in his heat. "Tripped on a sunbeam" is how he described it.

Wohlhuter set a world record at 880 yards in 1974 with 1:44.1. At the time, imperial distances were still recognized. The 800 meter record at the time was 1:43.7
