DIY | Wedding Arch from 2x4's

  • This week is a special project. I was asked by my brother in law and future sister in law to make their wedding arch. Of course I said yes!
    The bride wanted a simple design and I used 2x4's as we wanted light timber. This also helped keep the cost down. I took off the rounded edges but this is a totally optional step.
    This project can be made with just a circular saw or even just a hand saw. The angle at the top is 20 degrees. The overall height of the arch is 2.5m and the 1.8m width.
    There was a florist attached the flowers using cable ties and I wasn't required to add anything to the arch for the flowers.

    I love this minimal & beautiful project! Right up my alley. And full of tips! I especially love the tip to keep the angled off cuts when drilling through. Thanks A! Killer job!

    Couple of questions:
    You say you start with 90mm x 45mm ??? A standard 2x4 is 90mm x 35mm ...
    90 mm x 45 mm is 1-3/4 not 1-1/2, the dimension of a finished 2x4 ...
    Your bases appear to be larger than the A-Frames timbers. Is that just camera angles?
    Do you have a construction drawing and parts list one can access? As others have asked, I need to add the braces and they are complicated angles ..

    Hi there! I know this is an older tutorial, but I’m hoping you can answer my question. I would like to add the support structure to the feet, how would you have done that?

    • @SmallFryCreations
      @SmallFryCreations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! Once you have the main feet on I would add the support. Before bolting the two sides together I would lay the side down and put the 2x4 under it to make the angles you need to cut. Then you can drill and screw it into place. Hope this helps

    I am trying to do this project, but that angle on top looks a lot wider to me than 20 degrees. What am I missing? I am using a speed square and when I mark 20 degrees, the cut will not be as long as yours. Help please.

    Hello, I would like to make this arch for my wedding. Can you provide the step by step directions on your feed, along with measurements? I was having a hard time catching the specific lengths of the cuts. I would greatly appreciate it.

    • @SmallFryCreations
      @SmallFryCreations  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is awesome Kendra. I started with the two pieces for the arch at 2.5m long. I then cut the top angle and bolted it together. I got the couple to stand in front and make sure they were happy then I cut the bottom just so it had the angle.
      The bottom parts are 900mm long.
      Hope this helps. 😃

    your shop is amazing. i wish i had all the tools you did. couple of questions from a beginner in America. I am going to make this tomorrow. please help me understand- for the top threaded inserts you are drilling a hole all the way through and are there two holes on the top? did you drill using a Forstner bit or just a regular bit? what size of threaded inserts do i get? will that correspond to the drill bit size? my main concern is what size dril bits do i need and what size bolts and insert threads. thanks for your help.

    • @SmallFryCreations
      @SmallFryCreations  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thank you much 😁
      The threaded inserts just need to much your bolt size. On the side of the threaded insert you don’t drill all the way through. Just enough for the insert.
      The bolts just need to be long enough to go through the timber and into the insert.
      For the drill bill it just needs to be big enough so the bolt goes through but not so big that the bolt head also goes through. I used a forstner bit to counter sink the bolt heads but this step can be missed. Just means the bolt head will stick out from the timber but it’s not a huge deal.
      Hope this helps. Any other questions just let me know.
      Good luck! You can do it 👍😁

      @@SmallFryCreations so what size were your bolts? I only saw small threaded inserts and from your video it looks like the bolts are bigger but I can't tell.

    • @SmallFryCreations
      @SmallFryCreations  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey I can’t remember but I would of just gotten bolts to match the insert😀

  • @katja2253

    whats the angle on the top? 20 degrees? and whats the angle you cut on the bottom? also 20 degrees?

    • @SmallFryCreations
      @SmallFryCreations  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best thing to do is move the piece apart the spread you want at the bottom and then mark and cut the top angle. I then ran a long straight board across the bottom to cut them flat. That way you take the measurements and error out of it 😀 hope that helps

    What size threaded inserts did you use?
    Cheers

    • @SmallFryCreations
      @SmallFryCreations  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would depend on what bolts you use. You just need to match the bolts to the insert.

    • @justincurley8353

      @@SmallFryCreations I could only find M6 threaded inserts but yours look a little larger and would be more sturdy.

      I’m pretty sure I got mine from Hare and Forbes. I purchased a variety pack and they were in there. I believe Bunnings also sell them in the table leg section

      Hey Justin sorry it took so look to get back to you. I just looked in the box I have. It doesn’t say what size the inserts are. I know I got my set from hare and forbes. If you were worried if you could out an extra bolt in and I’m sure that would be strong enough.
