Any "edge" that a retailer "might" have is negated 10 fold by the fact that hedge funds use retail traders to provide liquidity in order to establish large positions, at prices they want, by manipulating stocks that retail traders hold (i.e. running stops, phantom orders, creating a "picture" for the retail traders in level 2 by placing large orders at the bid then pulling the rug, etc., etc., etc.). Same manipulation games are played day in and day out, without any investigation what so ever by the SEC and other governmental agencies. They give the retail trader an edge in $50 trades, then slam them for $500 when they flush a stock 15% in less than a second. Conventional technical analysis is used as a tool by hedge funds to determine when and where to manipulate the markets. 1 in 10 hedge funds fail while 9 in 10 retailers blow up their accounts, so can't really compare the two by that metric. 8 of the 9 retailers who blow up their accounts "deserve" it however, because they make no effort to educate themselves properly or manage their risk.
