great video! been an oakland resident for a few years now after living in sf for a decade. love visiting alameda and especially phnom penh noodle house because it reminds me so much of cambodian food back home in long beach. oakland and alameda really remind me of long beach and i love it so much. cant wait to try fikscue! havent had indonesian food since i visited amsterdam several years ago. love the name of the channel by the way, really tug at the heart strings and made me tear up because food is so essential to our asian culture and identity. subscribed!
Alameda gets slept on - one of the best places to grub and drink in the Bay Area for sure. A place I am surprised didn't get mentioned was East Ocean Seafood & stellar dim sum spot IMO... though technically not South East Asian so probably not in this video perse since emphasis was on food from that part of the world
@@triaxe-mmb I been going to Chefs Wok and East Ocean my whole life, those spots will def get mentions in the future, but this video def was to focus only on the Southeast Asian cuisine on the island
All those restaurants look amazing. Especially the Vietnamese hot pot and the BBQ spot. I never considered Alameda as a go to place to visit but I’m definitely going to try and make time for it on my next visit to the Bay!
I recently moved out of the east bay 😢 and your content always gives me life as well as bringing a bittersweet tear to my eye. Your food shots, local take on what’s good, focus on the people behind the food, and even your soundtrack are always such a welcome addition to my TH-cam feed. Keep the great recommendations coming, they’re a great to-do list for locals and visitors alike! Meanwhile I’ll be rocking my Did You Eat Yet tote bag around the farmers market 🎉 thank you Victor!
Nice videos. I like that you show the local stuff. Wish I had time to try some of these places but I like to cook more at home. Lately I've been trying my hands at brisket and beef ribs.
Thank you for introducing us to Alameda. I live in the bay area and it's refreshing to see these unique interpretations of Asian cuisine that are not commonly found.
Suggestion please PACIFIC LIGHTHOUSE not in the list. It was the Neptune Disco club in the 70’s. PIER 29 In Ballena Bay. Owner graduated from Encinal High batch 90 I grew up and was raised in Alameda. Our old was at 600 Haight Avenue. The Cambodian restaurant in Webster was my Moms old beauty shop
I have been an Alameda resident since 2001. It’s so great that you’re highlighting some great spots to eat. I have eaten at these places except for Fikscue which I really want to try. Bhan Mae Vane is one of my favorite places and has very good appetizers, and you can always get a delicious bowl of pho at Sidestreet.
Fikscue looks soo good. I have been following them on IG and salivating. Hearing that they are opening an SF location in 2025 made me so happy. I originally found out about them because I was looking for somewhere that offered rendang, but then their texas BBQ looked the most legit that I have seen in the Bay. Can't wait to try it.
Might just be "us", but our family LOVES Vietnam House on Park St....if you haven't been there you can't miss it, it was originally an a-framed "Der Wienerschnitzel" location....they have a wonderful bahn-mi sandwich, as well as a great variety of pho and rice places....it's our "go to" when we crave Vietnamese food...!!!
@@HiDidYouEatYet "big plus"...they have their own parking lot/enclosed outdoor dining....a great "family run business"....ENJOY...!!! Keep it up, love your vids, Victor...!!!!
Seeing the food scene in Alameda, as an Oakland resident, I'm super happy about it. At this point, I'm quite worrying about Oakland's food scene. My FB sends me monthly restaurant updates in Oakland and Berkeley, you can see ones in Oakland closes 1 after another. I've been following on your video and wonder if any of the restaurant owners talk about what may take them back to opening restaurants in Oakland? Same thing happens with Oakland Chinatown. Now with all the crime worries, Chinatown is pretty much dead after 4pm daily.
As a Viet Chinese, I didn't even know Viet hotpot is a thing lol. Laotian food has that sourish fermented quality that I love personally. A great episode as usual mate!
I hate eating salad. Don't like it at all. But I'm always excited to get the tea leaf salad at Burma Superstar. It's just so tasty and crunchy. I highly recommend that dish and Burma to anyone visiting and even tho I moved away years ago, I still stop by Burma if I'm ever close to Alameda.
Indonesian side for Texas bbq? I know about Fiskcue for a while but only to find out about the special side dishes. Just sent your video to a friend who lives in Oakland and loves BBQ...
@@HiDidYouEatYet Yeah, I think that's def. the highlight and what distinguishes this bbq from others. I didn't know Texas BBQ can be this good till my last business trip (also my first time) visiting Austin. A lot of people think that I'm missing the whole point on the smoke turkey breast is my favor in Terry Black but IMO it's the bomb. Perhaps just cuz I'm a 1.5 Cantonese immigrant (came to the US when I was 17 while parents had to restart after their 50's without knowing any English), I find the best way to enjoy beef is always just salt and pepper. I don't like any bbq sauce either...
lol had a similar experience going to Austin for the first time back in like 2016-2017 for a work trip and trying brisket for the first time and was absolutely blown away. Texas BBQ is really something else
@@HiDidYouEatYet And interestingly, while spying on what exactly is the local favor with Uber Drivers (yes, they love T. Black too but with so many people, they rather go locally or just do things in their own backyard), they pointed out some of the local favor with this Egyptian guy doing great BBQ plus LORO, Cantonese/Malaysian inspired new style of BBQ. We didn't get to try them but you can tell how crazy the bbq food scene is.
I love your content. Not only as a fellow bay resident but just as unique and personal context. Never stop.

Bacogai, my hands-down fave in the East Bay!

viet churches do it - any community gathering for that matter

"Did you eat yet" is grammatically incorrect.
The correct way is "Have you eaten yet?"
