Living in Berlin: Food, nightlife, shopping and more with a city insider

  • This week, hosco.tv heads to Berlin, where our host Fritz Dickamp shows us around town and talks candidly about what life in the German capital is really like. An alumnus of Ecole Hotelière de Lausanne and co-founder of L.I.K.E. Hospitality Consulting, Dickamp kicks off the city tour with a walk through his neighborhood, Mitte, while explaining how he found his apartment and what one can expect to pay in rent in adjacent areas. While he admits that Berlin may not be the world’s most welcoming city, he reassures us that with a little effort, everyone can find their place there easily - from hipsters to punks to businessmen, Berlin has something unique to offer everyone. You’ll also hear Dickamp’s suggestions for best Berlin street food, his tips for moving around the city and his list of Berlin pros and cons. And of course, no hosco.tv city tour would be complete without our guide’s recommendation on nightlife-watch the full video to find out where Dickamp and Lucia head for a cocktail!

      unsicheresgangbild .. "find ab better job" .. really? eastern german jobs, which include berlin generally only pay 80% of western german jobs, at best. if you are a women that number is statistically 20% lower.. so an eastern german woman earns around 60% of a west german man.
      the reason berliners can't pay the rents anymore is because west germans who inherited the money of the better paid former generation and wealthy foreigners buy every appartement they can find, as their vacation places.
      it is not a fair competition.

    I agree with most of what he said but Berlin is not a cosmopolitan city. At least not when you comparing to cities like Paris, Amsterdam, London, New York, Los Angeles, etc. Berlin has some diversity when comparing it to the rest of Germany, but Germany is also a relatively homogenous country. That is why it seems like Berlin has a lot. You won't make very many, if any at all any, German friends. Most of your friends will also be immigrants. The nightlife is not for everyone to enjoy (certain people are not as welcome as others). If you don't fit a certain mold and you even do the smallest things different, you will stick out like a sore thumb. Like for example: working on Sunday's, not knowing every single law, even things like smiling too much, or joking too much... Forget about small talk with a stranger. If you start talking to someone you don't know, they will look at you like you're some kind of alien. Even if you just say something like "nice shirt!"

    • @ekfylobifteki
      @ekfylobifteki 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Western part of Berlin-Mitte? It sounds really odd. I live in this area and never heard it called that way. The real Mitte has always been „east“ . The current administrative district of Mitte has indeed included the former western parts like wedding and moabit, but then the area where he lives is not here. This area is called Mitte-Mitte, or the real Mitte, which was east Berlin.

    I was excited to come and see Berlin for a few days, I live close to Munich but all I found was an ugly central city and that Berliner apparently hate Bavarians. Was trying to go party on my last night and they just told us to come back when we're 21. Guess we didn't look and act gay enough. But other than that I really liked that the weed is cheap and you can smoke in public without anyone batting an eye.
    Other than that I don't know if I'll ever visit again. If they wanna stay for themselves, that's fine.
    I thought about Berlin as open and tolerant to outsiders (even though I'm german myself) but it was a huge disappointment as a techno lover to not be able to party in the techno capital of the world. Even though that is the reason I came all the way from southern Germany.

      Moscow is too huge, Berlin is smaller and distances are shorter tan in hustling Moscow where all people are hurrying, but also it depends on where you live and where you work. The cost of living in Moscow is lower than in Berlin for sure, as well as the salary.
