How Does AMPLEFORTH Work? DEFI Explained

- So, what is Ampleforth? How does it work under the hood and why do the number of my AMPL tokens keep changing every day? You'll find answers to these questions in this video.
Ampleforth, in essence, is a new cryptocurrency with a quite unique feature - its supply is elastic and can change every day while the ownership of the AMPL tokens is never diluted.
There are 3 states that the Ampleforth protocol can be in, these are expansion, contraction or equilibrium. Before we explain how they work let's introduce one more concept - price oracles.
Price oracles are used to provide external prices to smart contracts. There are two main functions of price oracles in Ampleforth. The first one is to provide a current exchange rate of AMPL/USD. The second one is to provide a Consumer Price Index value. The CPI is used to establish a "target price" which is a price of 1 AMPL that the Ampleforth protocol tries to aim for. The target price is currently at $1.009 and it represents the 2019 purchasing power of the US dollar as represented by CPI. The target price plays a very important part of the protocol as it is used in conjunction with the current price to determine if there should be a change in the total supply of AMPL.
The Ampleforth protocol is implemented as a set of smart contracts deployed to the Ethereum blockchain. The AMPL token implements the ERC-20 interface and can be easily exchanged on decentralized exchanges such as Uniswap.

2. I don't know if the majority of the people like the idea of a changing supply of their tokens, thus, I don't think it may have much success. This is mostly in regards to fiat target where 1 ampl = 1 usd, however, in the case of Digg and Badger, I think it may succeed because Digg is targeting equilibrium with bitcoin price. Which in reality makes Digg a parallel bitcoin and as long as people value btc. Digg will also be valued. Fiat money may lose its value and therefore ampl may lose all the value. --Just my thoughts.

As far as I understand it, I wouldnt expect AMPL to be the money of the future but more of an infrastructure part to the ETH network. It would give real world shops such as retailers a possibility to set prices in AMPL, which would be rather consistent in value. People could then hold their money in whatever currency they like and pay with it according to current exchange rates to AMPL. I wouldnt like holding AMPL because despite it being consistent in value it for some reason kinda spooks me to never know the amount I have.

AWESOME VIDEO. The success of the coin depends of Geyser for now, because if the price drops to 0.90$ will happen a herd effect that will shrink the market cap permanently like a ponzi, but if the MC reach bilions can be a token with less manipulation than the others and backed by itself.
Since the Geyser has started the price has not gone below $1.09, and as long as the Geyser is active that will continue. By the time the Geyser is over and you have not sold, you will have enough AMPL to retire and live off of passive income from rebases. If another Geyser comes along well guess what, more super rebases! #MoonBootsAttached

I have a question and its about the expansion or contraction phase and the supply. For example if we are on expansion and the supply is rising, the number of coins that you own on a exchange like Kucoin is corelated with the total supply of AMPL? i will receive additional AMPL's tokens on my exchange account or this is valid only for tokens stored on Ethereum blockchain?

I was going to ask if it's possible for the rebase function to be taken advantage of? IE buying/ selling around the 2am threshold but the dampening factor seems to handle that problem

Fiz uma entrada com o AMPL em $ 0,70. comprei cerca de 788 ampl. Após cerca de 5 dias estava com apenas 668 ampl... Vendi os 668 a $ 1,06 obtive um bom lucro :) ... porem todo dia o rebase come nossas moedas...isso da um aperto no coração...
Que legal ver um comentário em português por aqui! Acho este projeto um dos mais interessantes que vi ultimamente, e penso que por mais que venha um aperto no coração quando as moedas vão sumindo, para momentos complicados no mercado ter algumas AMPLs como reserva vai te trazer bastante alívio.

How would paper derivatives and fractional reserve banking affect ample? Seems like this could add a lot of external influence. Supply change would make lending difficult. A loan made on an old supply will be easier or harder to pay off depending on the direction of the change.

If you borrow 1 ample and then demand for ample decreases despite inflation of the USD, you will experience deflation within ample and you will have a harder time paying back loans.

I think you're right. It's a great proof of concept, but there is no reason whatsoever to speculate on the value of the coin, and thus to 'invest', by definition.
Also they use the CPI which is problematic (housing cost is barely counted in there).
I understand that a currency being dilutive or not may be an issue, but by basing AMPL’s future price on the dollar, doesn’t that mean that it will be negatively influenced by any monetary policy changes made wrt the dollar?

As a function of time and the free market economy AMPL is vastly superior to BTC or any other staking coin in the crypto space. Once liquidity reaches critical mass then the skys the limit for this protocol. AMPL is BTC 2.0 ,Staking 2.0 but better.

lol, sorry for your evaluation metric and fundemantals. if you'd understand why bitcoin is valuable, you'd immediately flag these shitcoins. An exciting whitepaper, a seemingly unique monetary game theory may not be strong enough to compete with bitcoin, cuz there lacks certain core fundemantals.
So was AMPL made to be a stable token that does not increase of decrease in price?
If I buy for 100$ ample and the price the next day increases 30% now I have 130$ after one more day passes the price of 1 ample is still 1,30$ so do i still have 130$ or at 2:00 utc my overall value goes back to 100$?

I already have my Ampleforth in a Uniswap liquidity pool and have LP tokens staked in the Geyser. Now that Sushiswap is doing the same thing, can I do both with the same LP tokens, which is better?
Hmm, hard to say. On on side, Geyser gives you an extra multiplier for staking for longer, so you withdraw and put it back in a few days the APY will be lower. Also, the staking contracts look fairly secure and I believe they were audited. On the other hand Sushi has much higher APY at the moment. They contracts are now going through a security audit. Other option would be to split the LP tokens between both, to increase the APY but lower the risk. I hope this helps

How is the 1.009 USD derived and how does it change?
1.009 USD comes from the CPI oracles and it will change if the oracles report different value. The details are shown on this dashboard www.ampleforth.org/dashboard/oracles

@@Jaguar2121 yes, Ampleforth basically decided that they want to "freeze" the purchasing power of 2019 US Dollar, so with ongoing inflation and money printing the value of 2019 USD comparing to today's USD should be going up.
Today, the price target is 1,011 USD.

@@ifeawosika966 AMPL uses the rebase, which does not remove or add coins, no movement is made in the blockchain. But in any case it remains a deflationary currency. It is earned when the market cap goes up, and since the currency is not affected by inflation it will definitely go up. Personally I use it to give some volatility to the stable coins that I lend, because it is not a stable coin, it is very volatile, its price is stable, but its value is not, so be careful

What is the purpose of oracle rate?
If I understand correctly the supply is adjusted daily to try to stabilize AMPL price at the oracle rate (currently $1.009). Oracle rate is calculated to be the frozen purchasing power of the 2019 dollar. So if inflation of the dollar is occurring and lowering its purchasing power, the oracle rate will increase so that AMPL stabilizes at a higher value and is not affected by inflation. Thus you receive the lower inflation risks like bitcoin as well as the lowered volatility of elastic currencies.
What happens if hype oushes orice that high that all tokens come into circulation?
Why would i buy for exemple 10.000$ of ampl at 0,3$ each if everynight i would lose a not negligeable pourcentage of my holdings ? I don't know, why would the price goes up with that in mind ?

2) Is there a way to see the daily historical number of AMPL tokens in the wallet? (daily token numbers last week, last month etc)
3) For the LP that get paid in AMPL for pooling what ratio is paid out?

For me it is the safe way to move from USDT when mafia from feD attacks them. It is alternative and mayby will safe cryptocarency markets in the future without banks fed, us gov and other thiefs.
