Everything is for sale to the highest bidder: Joola, approved behind closed doors, Vulcan buying ball rights without prior experience making balls, and subpar courts with wavy, uneven surfaces, are just a few examples. As for Pardoe investing in meaningful improvements to the pro game like Close-Call Replay, dream on. Pardoe getting paddle testing correct (whatever Joola wants, Joola gets) or even just being able to explain the rules to the manufacturers is laughable, Think about how ineptly serve rules were written and rewritten An independent paddle testing lab is imperative to growing pro pickleball, and a "competent" single independent rules oversight board is necessary if pickleball is ever going to be in the Olympics. Tom Barnes is factually accurate and I am completely on his side, but I agree with many comments pointing out that he is far from succinct. Greetings PB Studio. I catch almost every single one of your podcasts. In your entire history, I believe that this is the single most important podcast because this has implications for the fundamental health of this game for amateurs, professionals, and podcasts like yours. It is essential that we have reformation. Though Selkirk, and by extension Tom, is the largest PB paddle manufacturer, he cannot do this task of refomation alone. There is no question that weak and poor leaders he names in this podcasts are generally vindictive in their nature. (I do leadership training and analysis.) Thus, there would likely be felt anger at someone like Tom who is calling them out. These weak leaders will do everything possible to retaliate and sideline Selkirk if at all possible. Selkirk cannot stand alone even though they may be the largest manufacturer for now. Ultimately, money talks and this is all about the almighty dollar for the PPA and their sponsoring manufacturers. Manufacturers, both large (i.e. Selkirk) and smaller (i.e. 11Six24 or Honolulu etc) need public support to stand up against these absolutely unconscionable, greedy, and incompetent leaders. Perhaps podcasts such as yours can facilitate a boycott by the consumers for the few (three?) manufacturers that decide to play ball with the PPA currently. The only way to get out of this is to hit the PPA in the pocket book. Ultimately, the consumers have to stand up. Who can galvanize the consumers? I believe that best avenue to do so is the Podcasters such as yourself, Kew, Brandon etc.
Lets hope that the USAP gets its act together and we can move on from this ridiculous UPA-A sham. The governing body should absolutely not be in the pocket of a for profit league. Hopefully Selkirk and the other brands stand firm and don't cave to the demands of the UPA.
Someone needs to make a relatively simple device that can test both power, pop, and spin (decently accurate) to give to manufacturers, players, and tournaments and say it must fall within this to be legal, if it isn't that's on the manufacture for cutting it too close. Either that or soften up the damn balls, its not that hard to make a slower ball, I think that is the best route to take.
One just needs to look at golf. A full 20 years ago golf switched from a CoR test to a CT (characteristic of time) test that uses a small portable pendulum system. This allows for on-site testing at tournaments. As for the ball, just last year golf finally decided to rollback the performance (about a 5% loss in distance). It only goes into affect for pros starting in 2028 and amateurs in 2030.

good info that needs to be shared to a much wider audience. Everybody here should tell at least 10 people that they play pickleball with to start watching and subscribing to Chris' podcast and help grow the channel
The solution seems so simple. Hire a good mechanical engineer investigate what other sports are doing for their testing especially baseball and tennis. Create some specific test that limit power pops in, etc.. then put the regulations out 18 months in advance. It’s almost like the people who are over the UPA have no business or engineering knowledge. They may be able to handle rules, but not technology.
Mr. Barnes is understandably passionate and frustrated about the UAP debacle. Been pretty obvious that UAP and Joola are hand in glove. I would recommend Barnes try decaf before any future interviews. Wow! 😂
It seems to me the pro players may have the most leverage in this PPA/UPA debacle. If the PPA wants to save it's self, they need to start by firing Pardo. If they don't, and the PPA self destructs, the pros can simply walk over to the APP.
Pickleball Studio has more influence on what paddle I purchase than what any Pro is playing on Tour. Who needs UPA cert? In fact 80-90% of players at your local park don't even care about USPA certification. I play a MOD. Does the stamps help me? Can't play it anywhere in July? BS 70% of >4.0 players at my park play with an "Illegal" paddle. Stamps do not drive sales like a good review.
I like the info here. I have to wonder why the major manufacturing interest can't take over and make their own sanctioning and testing body. Why not cut out the UPA-A, etc?
Our local city rec center is considering not allowing delisted paddles to be used in rec play, I think this is an important first step to keep Pickleball fun for everyone.
Aloha! He's clearly a smart guy and theres some good info here to chew on. I do wonder if hes the right 'face' of a unionized paddle consortium tho. The upaa/ppa shenanigans are understandably personal to him and I admire his passion but it clouds the facts hes trying to convey imo. Mahalo for setting this up tho and for him volunteering his time and energy to bring us insight on the topics.
Everything needs to be documented in writing and contractually binding by all parties. If the governing body violates guidance, there needs to be both a financial penalty to them as well as an accepted time deviation for the manufacturers to support requested modifications or reject with technical justification. No industry can perform on word of mouth agreements.
So apparently you're paying for exposure in PPA and MLP which are 2 leagues that 1) are filled with pros who won't play hard because of their comfortable salaries and 2) need 10M to survive the next few months.
PMA is a good start but ASTM International already exists to provide organization and a framework around setting industry standards. The industry need to set up a Pickleball Committee within ASTM. ASTM is arranged to allow all industry stakeholders to come together to set standards by industry consensus. The stakeholders in this case would include manufacturers, including associations such as the proposed PMA, independent technical experts, including paddle reviewers, other industry associations, such as UPA, USAP, etc., and even individual stakeholders, such as nerdy players who want to have their nerdy views heard.
I get that USAP wasn't moving fast enough for Connor Pardo, but the truth is it takes time to get these things right and so what he's done instead of letting USAP get their testing sorted is just create this huge of mess of confusion in the industry and his company is taking a huge hit to their credibility as well. All the while, it seems his only solution to any issue is to charge people more money for things they didn't ask for and use the cache of having the best pros to bully the industry into making him gobs of profit. We need ben johns and Joola to team up with Selkirk and other brands and stop this nonsense before it gets even more out of hand. If the top pros join in on the pressure, Connor will rightly have to adjust.
Solution and best practices for an awesome sport going forward: Current C suite of PPA etc conglomerate divest themselves and depart this scene. Control goes 1-1-1 to players/manufactures cooperative and investors in stock or share of profits annually. Get rid of this current group of people. They are soo out of touch.
This owner really seems like he cares about the industry. I used to love Selkirk until they needed me to send back a paddle for a clear warranty approved by the club where it was purchased. Never sent it back sitting in my back broken
Mark my words UPA is using the big player contracts as a reason why they are trying to get all this money from the companies and in 2 years they are going to not resign any of the players and make them Eat what They Kill with only prize money and the prize money will not be close to what the contracts are and will pocket the difference. If UPA can keep this from collapsing in the next 2 years they will be sitting very pretty.
I am not intimately knowledgeable of the pickleball business space, but as someone in business, this seems to be an opportunity for a strong organization to come in and succeed?
Please pull the rug out from the PPA/UAPA. I’m a golfer and if this happened in the industry, you bet your ass there would be someone new and ready to take on the challenge. The governing body not sending tests, but yet ripping OEMs for hundreds of thousands of dollars without anything in return is absurd. It’s close to another US government that affects everyone’s lives, but not getting into that. Pickleball has a chance to stand up for itself where in other places we simply cannot. Selkirk and others should stick it to the man since the voice of the people outweigh this “overseeing” body. Give me a month of pro’s with wood paddles.
All great and important info but could be edited down to half the time or less especially if you want to reach a broader audience. He repeats himself at least three times on every point. Took me three separate sessions to finally finish it!
Who would have thunk - not only did everyone jump on the hype train to over price pickleball products, but the governing association is dirty too. Does this effect 99% of the players? No - but he is right, if any small/medium brands want to break into the pro scene to get some of that marketing out there, they can't. If people are getting into the amateur game, and they look at paddles and see all of these approved stamps on some, but not on others, they probably would lean towards those "approved" paddles w/o knowing why and how they are approved. At this point, paddle companies should just send the minimum amount of paddles that pros only use to get certified, and let the money speak. Tennis has pro stock rackets, why can't pickleball? That way the average paddle doesn't have to worry about being approved, prices for those can be reasonable, then sell pro stock paddles for that upcharge for the company and not let PPA have extra money. Also, the lack of transparency in testing is wild. How is that not public information - feels like shady business
OK, so why doesn't the pickleball paddle/manufacturer/player industry just say "I'm made as hell and not gonna take it anymore"? Strike a deal with the APP and move there! Of course, contracts may need to expire. Also pull your advertising/marketing dollars from the PPA. I'm sure I've missed something here but...
People need to see how UPAA is going through this the wrong way. Releasing a new standard and announcing the standard at the same time a paddle that has met those criteria at the same time is insane. All the other brands are given this info after the fact but one inside brand gets a head start on the new standards? Imagine if Ford invented a new airbag and the NHSA told them that next year there would be a new test that requires that airbag debut no other brand new about it? Shitstorm at a minimum.
Let's be real, nothing is done "only for the pro game" as the $$ comes from amateurs. Most amateurs want to play with pro equipment regardless of sport. UPAA knows that and honestly I think they fully expect to "beat" USAP altogether at some point.
Why doesn’t your group just come out with some specs and testing hopefully power limits and then call the recreational club of America recreational something and use a stamp for your paddles there and screw the UPA Do tennis rackets need to be approved by a body? I’ve never noticed a stamp on my racket. In fact, if I remember correctly, they don’t have a limit on the size of tennis racket because if you make it wider, it’s harder to swing after a certain point if you make it longer it’s harder to swing after a certain point but they did they had they had no limits when they came out with wider tennis rackets at all And they let the Market handle it cause they were some other issues now when someone came out with these unusual strings they gave interesting properties. I think they were like double grade strings something like that. They kind of band it after the fact and but they don’t review every said a string out there. They just review it if suddenly a player seems to have a huge competitive advantage then they go ahead and and ban it or do something about it. I think paddles are a little bit tougher, but I think it might be a limitation put on spend definitely on power because people get hurt in this game cause they’re at the kitchen. Whereas in tennis, people would play on the baseline only and not come in.
I’m pretty sure he reached out to virtually everyone he could but he did talk about how not everyone has each others contacts and information to get in touch. I would be a little surprised if they left joola out of the convo but I wouldnt be surprised given how in deep they are with the UPA and the obvious corruption there
I think UPA-A is arrogant enough to not care if the PEMA brands walk away. Joola will be their official paddle just like the Wilson basketball. I think APP is a real threat going with the national TV events. As much as we love pickleball, the majority of people don’t know who Ben Johns is. They will know the names of the players on TV. If PEMA goes APP, their pros will be on TV more, which may entice more pros. Maybe it’ll end up like UFC and PFL?
Why don’t these “other” brands get together and start their own amateur/pro league? (And keep pickleball fun with only Gen 1-2 paddles). Could be interesting. PPA is moving to full app viewing anyway… so Amazon TV viewing may no longer be available.
Chris’s face was saying “paint grit will keep pickleball out of the olympics” … and it was saying it for 2 hours because he wasn’t able to get in any words.
@Aaron-mn2ro he reached out if u were listening from the beginning, he represent a big name brand, it gets repetitive and sounds petty,i can never support Selkirk because of that, their paddles are underwhelming and price is outrageous for the "technology",it just sounds like he got beef with Joola.
@@800over talk about timing huh,why wasnt he doing this when the Joolas are still approved, but don't worry, Joola got gen4s coming out and his backward "technology" won't hold a candle against those, he should be focusing on improving his own paddles instead of nagging about it.
Is slapping "SLK Halo" on $30 Juciao paddles and then charging $130 a good value proposition? Besides that, good video and I respect Selkirk's resistance to these new sweeping changes
Selkirk needs a spokesman. Too much jibber jabber and emotional stuff. Whining.
The problem is that Joola is so deeply tied in with the PPA/UPAA already that they never will join Selkirk going against this.
Everybody like this video for the sake of the sport!
PPA= Paying Pardo Alimony
This guy makes me want to buy Selkirk paddles
Mark my words UPA is using the big player contracts as a reason why they are trying to get all this money from the companies and in 2 years they are going to not resign any of the players and make them Eat what They Kill with only prize money and the prize money will not be close to what the contracts are and will pocket the difference. If UPA can keep this from collapsing in the next 2 years they will be sitting very pretty.
I am not intimately knowledgeable of the pickleball business space, but as someone in business, this seems to be an opportunity for a strong organization to come in and succeed?
Are they not just licensing broadcast fees for paddles but also branded apparel worn by pros?
What about ethical concerns about Escalade Sports (Onix) and their copy right law suits? Would they be part of PEMA?
The facial expression of the hosts says it all. He really didn’t give a xxx. Either that or his attention span ended about 10 minutes in.
UPA's first task is to convince manufacturers and players.
What about Pickleball Central/UPA/PPA making their own paddles. Test everyone else's paddles then make your super paddles
Let's be real, nothing is done "only for the pro game" as the $$ comes from amateurs. Most amateurs want to play with pro equipment regardless of sport. UPAA knows that and honestly I think they fully expect to "beat" USAP altogether at some point.
Why doesn’t your group just come out with some specs and testing hopefully power limits and then call the recreational club of America recreational something and use a stamp for your paddles there and screw the UPA
Do tennis rackets need to be approved by a body?
Great interview, I mean monolog, but man - take a deep breath.
Did Tom reach out to all manufacturers? Doubtful, but would love to see more accountability.
I’m pretty sure he reached out to virtually everyone he could but he did talk about how not everyone has each others contacts and information to get in touch. I would be a little surprised if they left joola out of the convo but I wouldnt be surprised given how in deep they are with the UPA and the obvious corruption there
Why did he have ChatGPT open on his computer?
I think UPA-A is arrogant enough to not care if the PEMA brands walk away. Joola will be their official paddle just like the Wilson basketball.
I think APP is a real threat going with the national TV events. As much as we love pickleball, the majority of people don’t know who Ben Johns is. They will know the names of the players on TV. If PEMA goes APP, their pros will be on TV more, which may entice more pros.
Maybe it’ll end up like UFC and PFL?
Dang, Shots fired, RIP Olympic break dancing. Raygun was a saboteur.
Unbelievably based Tom
Messing with the pros contracts that is mislead or disparaging to the contractual parties is called Torturous interference.
Why don’t these “other” brands get together and start their own amateur/pro league? (And keep pickleball fun with only Gen 1-2 paddles). Could be interesting. PPA is moving to full app viewing anyway… so Amazon TV viewing may no longer be available.
The APP is more about including amateurs and pros.
To sumnerize Mr Barnes...like,like,like,like,like,like,like,like.
Chris’s face was saying “paint grit will keep pickleball out of the olympics” … and it was saying it for 2 hours because he wasn’t able to get in any words.
@@65atBestPB he had enough of this man's bitching from the look of it,and he wasn't that impressed like John Kew
Getting Edward Snowden vibes
The Selkirk whinging tour continues
Thanks for your sharing. This does not seem to be conducive to paddle innovation.
Tommy B for prez
USAP and UPAA are both ridiculous. Nothing showing what or how they test paddles. These tests should be something Pickleball Studio could replicate.
The manufacturers and the reviewers actually know what USAP is testing.
No wonder paddles cost $300 a pop.
Is PPA trying to kill pro pickleball? This sounds ridiculous.
didn't he literally just did the same interview with John Kew regarding the same issues?
people reach out to him for interview and ask him the same questions, isnt his fault
Guy is doing the media rounds....he wants the info out everywhere.
@@800over talk about timing huh,why wasnt he doing this when the Joolas are still approved, but don't worry, Joola got gen4s coming out and his backward "technology" won't hold a candle against those, he should be focusing on improving his own paddles instead of nagging about it.
Sounds like Selkirk just needs to remove their support for the PPA and all of their Pros.
The Pros are contracted to play in PPA but then contracted to use a Selkirk paddle.
Is slapping "SLK Halo" on $30 Juciao paddles and then charging $130 a good value proposition? Besides that, good video and I respect Selkirk's resistance to these new sweeping changes
They pay THAT much for testing? Jeez...
Hostile take over of the sport of pickleball: quite obvious.
Selkirk needs a spokesman. Too much jibber jabber and emotional stuff. Whining. In the other pod he admitted to dumping paddles on the very last day in November and now he's saying "we never heard back after we submitted them." It is not an "own" to read off strongly worded emails to UPA reps. So cringe and unprofessional. Dude is a robot guy not a PR guy.
Sorry TLDW - Cliffs Notes anyone?
It’s almost 2025….”AI” is takin over the world….yet the “PPA/UAPA” is in the dark ages on how to test and set standards🤦♀️😂
I binged to Joe Rogan podcasts usually for more than 2 hours+ a video. This could be a new thing for you guys hahaha.
Tom doing everything except making better paddles
😂 he is charging ppl 300+ for mediocre paddles,at least Joola is giving ppl what they wants
Serlik is a corporation and works for profit. PPA is a corporation and wants to make money as well. The guy has zero innovation compared to to other brands his paddles are expensive as hell compare to 11six24 etc and he is complaining like a child. He may as well create another corporation like PPA to compete against them, sign pros advertise the sport as they do and then he can certify paddles for free. Oh well he can start by selling his paddles cheaper maybe??
You seriously cannot find inexpensive selkirk paddles? Have you even looked? I don't own any selkirk paddles but I am pretty sure you can get a two pack with balls at costco for 99$.
@@800over Actually, at Costco, it's $69 for two paddles, three balls, and a carrying bag.
Their “girly” paddles are super expensive compared to what other firms offer. Yeah u can find cheap paddles but not girly cheap paddles like jellybean and their expensive paddles are for garbage compare to Paddletek or even Joola . Base line is that they are a profit organization like ppa and the other firms the last couple years they didn’t innovate anything with value to the sport while at least ppa promotes events every week. They can cry like babies as much they want or they can bring something new to the table . They can even go and compete with ppa I don’t care. But this guy is a joke
This guy can't shut his mouth. He should pay that $20,000 fee to anyone who can listen the 4 hours.
the joola bots are here early i see
lmao he's the one charging $333 for a paddle that no pro wants to use
@@Aaron-mn2ro Really? It looks more like YOU are the bot (Selkirk bot).
@@Aaron-mn2rohe sounds like robot himself, doing two "interviews" on the same topics, ranting and bitching about the same shit over and over and over again. Stop crying and get on with the program,he just mad that Joola got bigger balls and pulls than he does and his paddles can't hold a candle again the gen3s, Joola is trying to elevate the paddle game and his company is literally charging an arm and leg for backward technology.😂
Naw this guy is annoying af. Perfect example of someone who tries so hard to be intellectual…dude…just talk in plain English when you have trouble with pronunciation. I hate people that try to talk like this. It doesn’t make you smarter nor do you sound any smarter.
