    Listening to his French, accented by Russian and Yiddish inflections and accents, is a biographical lesson in itself. I'm as fascinated by the course of his life as I am by his art. I have a couple of his etchings from the Bible series, and hearing him talk deepens my appreciation of them.

    You have no idea how this has made me smile. I’ve been in love with Chagall since 2015 and now quarantine has made me go on a Chagall binge of sorts, and I just keep falling deeper in love with his work. And now having come across this documentary and seeing what a sweet person he was until his last days... how could one not be fascinated by him? The painter of love indeed.

      Yes I have heard his name and seen (on screen) some of his works, particularly stained glass. He must have been a fascinating man to be with and talk to in his long life

    Wonderful documentary.
    Chagall - the artist of Dreams, Fantasy, Love ...
    Chagall says the secret of his life and his life's work is the love given him by his mother. They are his expression of gratitude for that love, his justification for the love she gave him (at 10-12 minutes).
    "I sometimes feel as though I were born, so to speak, between heaven and earth, as though the world were a great desert where my soul wanders like a flame .. "
    "As I grow older I see more clearly and distinctly what is right and wrong in our way of life and how ridiculous is everything not achieved with one's own blood and one's own soul .." (57 minutes)

    Thank you for posting this documentary film. I'm moved by Chagall's art, and it's a delight to hear his voice and to learn more about his life after seeing and appreciating so many of his paintings.

    I can not pretend to understand all that is said and shown in the video yet I want to continue to listen and to see
    It is a shame that the relationship and son he had between marriages has been not been mentioned especially as much of the film is about love

    It is always interesting to hear surrealists talking about "freedom". They meant something much different about it than we today

    This 18th century Classical period F.J.Haydn/Mozart is so idiomatically incorrect for Chagall. Maybe Olivier Messian. But not classical period. Even if Chagall likes Mozart he is architecturally so 20th century sorry. I hate it when painters are incapable of understanding the architectural linguistic structural parallels between their work and other mediums. At least Kandinsky understood his work wasn't very tonal. Because tonality and representationalism are the same.

      Feelings don’t need logic, it’s useless trying to find coherence in art. At least I see this way.

      i think you are full of shit, but i don't know the scene to which you are referring, and though you introduced Messiaen to me i think you are way off and a newcomer to Chagall

    • @rich8880
      @rich8880 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Messian is haunting if you are referring to his Black Bird. Chagall is about love. The choice would be incorrect I think.

      Music is an a priori more abstract medium, the chronology of whose essence moves in an entirely different shape than visual art. I think Mozart is a good fit for Chagall: familiar figures imbued with a religious, magical love, flirtatious humor, and romantic hyperbole. In any case, if the artists are great, pairing them will summon up otherwise undiscoverable treasures. Try reading Beckett and listening to Ukrainian chorale music, or Kafka and Coltrane. Silly but who knows :)
