It's stunning to me how functional quad's are today. When I busted my neck in the 80's, it was rare to see a quad. in a manual chair. They just didn't have the balance or the arm strength to be able to get around. I could pick a quad or a para from just a snapshot from the shoulders up. I lived in the hospital for 8 months, I can remember just one C5-6 female quad that was able to do transfers on her own. I was a part of the ground breaking studies from the 80's that studied the effect of high dose steroids on spinal cord injuries. I remember how they stopped the study early and rushed the findings out just ahead of a 3 day weekend. They stated that the results were so astounding, it would be unethical not to release their findings considering the magnitude of a spinal cord injury. At one point I was completely paralyzed from a C5-6. At 3 months after injury, I started getting muscle function back so fast, it was difficult to keep up with which group of muscles to work on from 1 day to the next in P.T. When I was discharged from the rehab. hospital I went home in a rental wheelchair waiting for my new chair to arrive. When it came in 2 months later, I didn't even take delivery of it. The only thing I was using the rental wheelchair for, was getting dressed.
