But what feels like *even more* of a crime is knowing that we will never get an official remaster of this game *or* a new game that fully utilizes its sublime combat. 😔
The lack of delay between abilities, the fact that you can immediately continue your combos, and the beauty of a well done speed keyblade combo, such fantastic combat in an otherwise divisive game
They made KH perfection and then proceeded to fuck it up with BBS and 3D's stupid gimmicks and of course those were the ones that get remembered and worked into the main line series.
Just finished playing through Re:Coded Critical Mode again recently and I have to say that the combos are very fluid especially with keyblades such as Oblivion.
Olympia, Oblivion, Metal Chocobo, Zero/One, Lionheart, Oathkeeper, Ultima Weapon But Oblivion and Zero/One takes the cake on the best keyblades in that game.
1 thing i love is that the combo finisher/modifiers changes depending on the keyblade, for example, a kingdom key being either clock level 4 or max level after upgrading gives it the zantetsuken combo finisher
This game felt so natural to play and the upgrade system was fantastic, I’m still scratching my head as to why they didn’t include this game in the collection remastered
When they were originally making 1.5, they wanted to have 1, ReCOM, and Days, and then use the porting of the Days engine to fit ReCODED into 2.5. The problem was, they didn't have 1's source code, and they realized that reconstructing 1 was going to take a lot of time - and given the choice between that and Days, they were always going to pick 1. So without that engine, they couldn't easily put Coded into 2.5. ...And then they got fucking lazy, because the original version of 2.5 released almost an entire fucking decade ago and they could have properly rereleased them by now, but no, having them be reduced to cutscene collections was easier, even though it cuts a lot of the best shit from both games.
I still hold that Re:Coded has by far the best implementation of the Command Deck out of all the games that use it. I also don't mind them changing up the gameplay with the gimmicky fights they implement (though only sometimes).
I remember the game recoded came from was barely a step above Vcast in its combat system. It did have a cool gimmick where you could build up a meter then spend it on one of three buffs but it wasn't very well balanced and most enemies would die before you could even use it in the first place.
Re:Coded was my first foray into Kingdom Hearts. I loved playing it so much I worked towards getting to max level and getting a bunch of the trophies, including getting the Ultima Weapon. Zone of Ruin is still my favorite finisher. Finishing off bosses with it always feels amazing. Still wish it got a proper console re-release.
Yep, the keyblades don't have the usual Strength/Magic stats anymore Thanks to the clock gauge, all keyblades are unique to use in many scenarios. Need to get some extra health without potions? Lady Luck gives it to you, with the bonus of elemental bonuses Need a quicker combo to stagger enemies? You got Three Wishes/Lionheart! Heavy damage with heavy hits? Olympia/Metal Chocobo is good with Brick Wall augment. Oblivion is a good alternative too, but is a double-edged sword upon using it for the first time. All Keyblades have excellent variety in their attributes, and there is a good balance between them.
@@darkzeroprojects4245 Unfortunately, the one that pioneered this gameplay isn’t Square Enix. It’s the dev team from H.A.N.D. The moment they moved on from Re:Coded, they never used this Keyblade system again, favoring the Strength and Magic Stats again from Birth By Sleep onwards. And no, even if Dream Drop Distance is in 3DS, they went for the Birth By Sleep Command System that focused more on Flair and Flash than the actual impact. Re:Coded’s system had a nice impact with their commands that this keyblade system would work very well, making it combo-friendly and combo-extensive just like KH2. And I would know, I even beat the game still keeping Sliding Dash in the game until I got its upgrade: “Sliding Rush”.
358/2 Days and RE:Coded are like polar opposites. 358/2 focused more on the story, and thus, the gameplay suffered. Granted, 358/2's story was pretty important, but still. Re:Coded focused more on the gameplay, and thus, the story was... basically inconsequential. Like, I think it might have led into DDD, but honestly I can't remember what affect the story of Re:Coded had on the plot of KH as a whole.
The only things that Re:Coded brough lore-wise is show what Mickey wrote to the Destiny Island trio in the KH2 ending, lead into DDD, and mention the Book of Prophecies for the first time. Admittedly, the book is extremely important lore, but still, just these three bits. And a lesson on existentialism during the C.O. section.
Even Days Combat is pretty clean, combos are good speed, your air weight and ability to just stop attacking and fall is decent, and you have a lot of varied combos between the keyblades and Y-Combos, magic is amazing, the biggest issues are some of the bosses stink(Recoded is not free of this) and that enemies, especially on Mission Mode, have a lot of HP and Defense
@@ultimate8948 well, there's still Final Form which I consider the strongest as it should be. Limit just doesn't have great mobility hence why I don't really like to use it. I hope judgement got a nerf in the universe where Re:Coded final mix exists. That move is just too nutty, it can even twoshot the strongest enemy in the game under the right conditions.
It’s no coincidence that the KH game with some of the most fun combat in the series is the one where you’re the most able to freely string together your different moves outside of the usual combat contexts like “surrounded by targets” or “below target”. Sadly it’s held back in a couple ways. The command deck has a limited space for moves and they’re all on timers. The Sonic Arts and Impact Arts combat modes are restricted by equipping specific keyblades, which can’t be changed mid-fight in this game. The context-sensitive nature of KH combat does set it apart from other action games but if it wants to take itself to the next level I think it needs to do something more. The three different modes of attack in this game were a good step, next should have been letting you switch between them seamlessly and freely in combat. Combine that with maybe some alternate input for specific moves that aren’t on timers and that input changing what moves come out depending on the mode, it’ll be the best of both worlds.
I actually played Re:coded recently and the combat to this day is still great just stinks that 1. the story was boring and completely lackluster and 2. can't use the really cool combat system for some bosses, Olympus and Hollow Bastion 1 but other than that the game is really fun

And to fix the fucked damage in Days where physical does chip damage no matter who you're playing as and one good thunder can leave 4 entire health bars on the floor.
Re:Coded’s command variety all lean more on striking a nice balance between combo modifier/launcher/weak magic/finisher than BBS’s KH2 Drive Form inspired finishers and limits. Many of the former game’s command list selection are aerial combo friendly. DDD was an attempt to bridge the gap, but to little success. NEO TWEWY’s pin system is actually the best implementation of Command Deck (actual hot take)

Dude, thank you SO MUCH for making this! I've been looking for a video that I could show to people as an example of just how good Re:Coded's combat is for so long, and you delivered on that in spades! Those two combos on the Fat Bandits in particular were absolutely beautiful!
h.a.n.d. developing the best command deck system this series has ever seen but then having to relegate half the game to minigames that *don't use* said system has always felt like a crime to me. But what feels like *even more* of a crime is knowing that we will never get an official remaster of this game *or* a new game that fully utilizes its sublime combat. 😔
It sucks that the secret bosses are horrendous at being tests of skill, the second one especially just kills you if you don't beat it asap.
The lack of delay between abilities, the fact that you can immediately continue your combos, and the beauty of a well done speed keyblade combo, such fantastic combat in an otherwise divisive game
FINALY RE:CODED GETTING SOME RESPECT!
They made KH perfection and then proceeded to fuck it up with BBS and 3D's stupid gimmicks and of course those were the ones that get remembered and worked into the main line series.
All those crazy flippin dip kicks and you're chipping away at the health 😂😂😂💀
finally, some representation for us re:coded cody's out there
Just finished playing through Re:Coded Critical Mode again recently and I have to say that the combos are very fluid especially with keyblades such as Oblivion.
Olympia, Oblivion, Metal Chocobo, Zero/One, Lionheart, Oathkeeper, Ultima Weapon
But Oblivion and Zero/One takes the cake on the best keyblades in that game.
@@leonmystique9372 Zero/One is especially insane because max level is just "attack range = yes"
It's funny how a DS game makes the command deck more fun to use than a PSP game
Same as how a GBA game does a deckbuilder-fighter better than its PS2 remake, lol.
I think it's in part thanks to the L button that cycles the deck. After playing ReCoded, DDD felt kind of awkward without that.
1 thing i love is that the combo finisher/modifiers changes depending on the keyblade, for example, a kingdom key being either clock level 4 or max level after upgrading gives it the zantetsuken combo finisher
"Wtf why is every KH game so important to the story, they make you play EVERYTHING."
"Recoded sucks cuz it's not important to the story."
"Re:Coded sucks because the gameplay is so good and it's on the Nintendo DS only and NOWHERE else..."
@@Shagaru_Bleed that doesnt mean it sucks
@@OmegaChase1002 That's the joke here. It doesn't suck. It's good and I want to play it.
This game felt so natural to play and the upgrade system was fantastic, I’m still scratching my head as to why they didn’t include this game in the collection remastered
Probably because they didn't want to adapt the two screens
@@Nahobinoah yeah most likely, plus the art style would have to change like they did with chain of memories
@@NahobinoahThen how did 3D Dream drop distance get on Xbox and PlayStation then?
@@TheShinyFeraligatr Thank you for the explanation, didn't know that was the case!
I still hold that Re:Coded has by far the best implementation of the Command Deck out of all the games that use it.
I also don't mind them changing up the gameplay with the gimmicky fights they implement (though only sometimes).
Ya know a indie game with this combat system would be fine with me .
they really did recoded dirty by making it a movie in the HD collections.
recoded was the command deck system done right.
Recoded has really cool moves I wish it got a remake just like Chain of memories
I remember the game recoded came from was barely a step above Vcast in its combat system. It did have a cool gimmick where you could build up a meter then spend it on one of three buffs but it wasn't very well balanced and most enemies would die before you could even use it in the first place.
Finally someone preaching the goated combat of this game, it’s so awesome and great feeling. Been my fav kh game combat wise since I first played it
After years of everyone saying recoded is horrible it's nice that people finally see the game for what it is and appreciate it
The low poly look of DS graphics actually helps Re:coded's presentation honestly
Honestly I think its execution makes it charming.
Superman 64 crashed so ReCoded could fly
I swear soras combo voicelines go along with the music and it makes this so badass
Still wish it got a proper console re-release.
if only Re:coded and 358/2 days was remastered onto modern console. I would go nuts to play both those games again
Re:Coded is a game that it always better than I remember it being when I look back at it.
I think one of the best parts of Recoded is that multiple of the keyblades are usable. Lionheart, Oathkeeper, and Zero/One being the strongest imo
Yep, the keyblades don't have the usual Strength/Magic stats anymore
Thanks to the clock gauge, all keyblades are unique to use in many scenarios.
Need to get some extra health without potions? Lady Luck gives it to you, with the bonus of elemental bonuses
Need a quicker combo to stagger enemies? You got Three Wishes/Lionheart!
Heavy damage with heavy hits? Olympia/Metal Chocobo is good with Brick Wall augment. Oblivion is a good alternative too, but is a double-edged sword upon using it for the first time.
All Keyblades have excellent variety in their attributes, and there is a good balance between them.
@@leonmystique9372 ??
How was this not in other games?
(Did not play Kh3 to note.)
@@darkzeroprojects4245 They ditched Re:Coded’s system because Osaka Team went for all flash and flair instead of the actual impact.
And a lesson on existentialism during the C.O. section.
Re:coded was my introduction to KH and to see such a stylish combo video about it is really cool. Banger
Its insane that this didnt even get a full on remake and all we got was cutscenes.. such a huge disappointment
Any KH game where you pull out a giant data reconstruction of a limit breaker sword has to be goated
h.a.n.d. is one of the strongest studios known to man. Between Re:Coded combat and Neo TWEWY combat, they just constantly rule. Ignore Days combat.
@@syrelian agreed , love the days combat so much . once you optimize your panels and level your roxas up you can pull off insane combos and speed
It is honestly embarrassing how this game's combat feels 100x more satisfying than BBS and DDD, if only the gimmick sections didn't exist.
Imagine if Sora could do all this in KH1 then Sora would have been overpowered.
Limit Form in KH 2 is kinda powerful too, you know?
@@persona3rulez Kinda? It's arguably the best form with its healing factor, ars loops, and doesn't require donald or goofy to use.
@@ultimate8948 well, there's still Final Form which I consider the strongest as it should be. Limit just doesn't have great mobility hence why I don't really like to use it. You're basically left with Guard and Dodge Roll as your only ways of not dying. You can't even use Reflect as far as I know. However, it does lots of damage, way more than Valor, Master or normal Sora.
that's called Critical Mix
finally, the ReCoded experience video
Sora actually falls and doesnt hand in the air.
(1:13)
LOL! It literally is invisible.
In all seriousness I need to play this game again and see just how crazy the combat can be.
it really helps that almost every single command in the game is a viable choice -- insane potential to pull off combos
People is simply stupid. I played Re:Coded for the first time 12 years ago, and I have been coming back to it over and over again. Why? The gameplay feels surreal. This time, ALL the abilities combo onto each other, and no command is better than other, because they are all useful.
And the story isn't bad either. I think people just can't appreciate a goofy setting and shut up.
I personally love Re:Coded because there's a lot to love from it. A lot better than many other more loved entries.
the music you used for this vid is so fitting, I actually wondered for a bit if it was from re:coded
Something I liked about the DS Kingdom Hearts games that are very underrated are… Okay I didn’t even know recoded had air spiral by the way, or that you could slide dash in the air, wayyy cool!
But you ever notice in the DS games… albeit 358/2 days? Or even recoded… Each keyblade comes with it’s own unique moveset/ set of attacks! Like could yall imagine in KH3 or KH4 with the gameplay mechanics on the PS4 and PS5 how the gameplay would feel switching from the Kingdom Key to a disney world keyblade and having sora go from swinging/attacking a certain style/speed to a totally new arsenal of attacks… Omggg DS kingdom hearts games may not be known for the story but the DS gameplay mechanics are on point! They knew how to make the games engaging 😂
Been saying this for years.
Days: 10/10 story, 0/10 gameplay
Re:coded: 0/10 story, 10/10 gameplay
Yeah I would trust somecallmejohnny's words in why he feels that Re:coded is the better game compared to 358/2 Days because for him at the very least Re:coded didn't put him to fucking sleep while playing it like 358/2 Days did for him LMAO
I love recoded, i love the combat, i love the abilty grid, i even like the stupid 100 hell floor gaunlet and all the goodies it gives you in terms of abiltys, exp, and clothes.
I wish recoded got remade its so good, all it needs is a better camera and removal of a minor bit of clunk. So good.
This is why I consider Re:Coded to be the 3rd member of the top 3 games in the series alongside KH1 and KH2. Damn, that was so cool.
KH3 is right there
@@LeonardoRodrigues-uj1sm KH3 is fundamentally bad
@@AnAverageGoblinKH3 wasn't bad but it was mainly ok and average.
@@AnAverageGoblinah yes, the game with weapon switching, defensive maneuvers and cancels anywhere out of combos, versatile magic and shot locks that aren't completely detached abuse garbage, and the best secret bosses is fundamentally bad. Stop crying
@@thatitalianlameguy2235 just because the game has a lot of features doesn't mean its good lmao. its what the game does with those features, and Kh3 doesn't do anything good with them. for fucks sake they had to add new abilities in an update just so your combos connect faster. i'm not the one crying, you are. there is no excuse for Kh3 to be outperformed by a DS game.
Re:Coded has the snappiest combat out of all the Command Deck games and im all for it.
Really wish they would've put this on I.5+II.5 HD. It's a great game and the only part that's lacking is the story and cutscenes which is the ONLY THING IN THE COLLECTION
I just love the combo setup at 1:24 on the fat bandit.
This video is making me reconsider giving Re:coded another chance soonish. Its been years since ive played it but i kinda remember it being repetitive in a lot of spots and just not liking it.
Maybe i should give it another chance.
you should, it's great. you're more than welcome to rush through olympus after finishing wonderland, the rpg combat is mid at best
it is kind of repetitive, but the combat is so smooth that you just can't stop playing
I see why Xehanort(s) didn't go into the Datascape to mess with Data-Sora. They didn't want this smoke lmao
finally, some respect for Re:Coded, its gameplay is fuckin nutty
Why is the mobile-game-turned-DS-game the one that got the best implementation of the command deck?
Because the devs are goated.
Nah that judgment triad -> sliding dash -> eco spark against the last invisible was so clean why couldn’t this game get a console final mix 😭
Exo spark and chain rave were my favorite commands. They were really sick.
re:coded, everyone's favorite "underrated" game
This game redeemed the command deck system. If only ddd had sped up anaimations.
Damn if Sora gets Data-Sora's style points in KH4 it will be the best game by far
Let’s give ‘em a h.a.n.d.!
…okay, I’ll see myself out.
Trueblade has been really quiet since this dropped
unironically one of my favorite games of the series
I actually played Re:coded recently and the combat to this day is still great just stinks that 1. the story was boring and completely lackluster and 2. can't use the really cool combat system for some bosses, Olympus and Hollow Bastion 1 but other than that the game is really fun
What the FUCK is this??? Why does it look so good on ds???
If BBS played just half as good as this, I would respect it a lot more.
Did you catch the Better Battle System Mod video? Looks like it does now!
@@zaphero5518The better battle system mod does wonders to helo but alot of bbs' gameplay issues lie in the animations which are nowhere near as snappy and responsive as this games
It's not the game. The characters gameplay are weak. The only characters that are great to play as is Sora and Roxas. That's it. Everyone else is spamming, dull, and frustratingly laggy.

Square can legit reuse almost all assets to remake these games do I don't know why they didn't get a remake
God, I'm wondering how difficult it'd be to make hacks for this and Days, just to add more content. Adding in more sectors in Coded or missions in Days.
And to fix the fucked damage in Days where physical does chip damage no matter who you're playing as and one good thunder can leave 4 entire health bars on the floor.
Days final mix is certainly a dream of mine. Fixing the bigger issues with the game, I would cry for joy.
The command moveset in this game is my favorite
square enix had no business putting a fully fledged skill tree within a compact ds kingdom hearts game, but they did anyways. 💀
I'd like to see a Data-Sora mod for KH3. Maybe the two formchanges can implement his lighter and heavier keyblades' combos.
I swear there's no other KH move for me more satisfying than Muscle Strike
Long live h.a.n.d.
Re:coded is such an underrated and fantastic KH entry despite some of it's questionable gimmicks. Shame its only on DS.
NEO TWEWY’s pin system is actually the best implementation of Command Deck (actual hot take)
Re:coded had a lot of cool moves. The clock system was cool too when you had the right keyblades. I would love for you to be able to customize the clock system by choosing what pool of abilities a keyblade has.
RE: Goated 🗣
My first kh game, i thought it was the only game and when i saw kh1 i wondered why it looked so much better
This came out on the DS…
Bro I didn't even know it was a game you could play, I thought it was gonna be all cutscenes like 300 days and change
Reminder: This game is only on the DS.
Whens the remake/port coming square?
Would love to play this on Console or a sequel maybe
Will never forget the unwarranted hate for this game people had/have lol. Every kingdom hearts game is amazing, that should be a testament to the series but people like to be edgy and divisive. Playing this series in its entirety gave me a new appreciation for games like KH and fromsoft titles. Recoded taught me to never take someones word for it cause the game is amazing regardless of the "pointless" nature people label it with.
Yeah 's like a 7/10, core gameplay is great but it's got some issues holding it back
Edit: people thought combat that mostly aerial couldn’t work after kh3, this game is the example of it working well.
This is why i dont like Dream Drop Distance, the command deck is so smooth, and it also has my favorite command in Kingdom Hearts: Judgment Triad. Its so satisfying to use to me.
PLZ FORGET ABOUT OLYMPUS THE GAMOLAY WAS COLD ASF
It's one of those games that could use an HD remaster
Honestly Re:Codes doesn't get enough credit for how good its combat is. Personally I'd put it up there with KH 2&3. Also the fact that different keyblades have different combo chains just makes the options for combat so much more free compared to the way young Sora players in most other games.
