    A Female came to my backyard with 11 little chicks like few days old, one of them stayed in my backyard I don't know why and I have fed her since, now she is growing and is almost 3 months old, she was smaller than the little finches and now she is bigger than the mourning doves!

    I have a flock of true free-range quail...living on my acreage...not imprisoned in a greenhouse. I hand feed them daily, and they swarm all around me pecking away, then go off to forage. Wonderful litle birds.

      That’s nice,,compare to other people keeping their quails and game birds in small cages my birds have plenty of rooms to roam around and have organic fresh foods and veggies daily.
      I don’t have wild quails anymore,i just rescued them and released to wild again after few months..

    Beautiful birds kept in a lovely environment until released. What is the weight of these wild quails? They look larger than the coternix. We have stubble quail living in the wild in Australia.

    What happened to the parents? My husband found 12 eggs in the planter of sword ferns growing right outside his front door. Thee mother sat on them and the adults came & went to eat as well as feed their chicks, until they were old enough to leave. The parents left briefly for various reasons but returned always. The parents & chicks eventually left the entry way to return to the natural areas just beyond the back fence, which is only metal bars. I have many bird feeders now in the back patio planter area, so we have many Calif Qual hopping into our patio & planters through the open spaced between metal bars. They come daily looking for dropped seed & insects, the males get into breeding fights with one another, and the winner spends his time at the top of the fence bragging about his kingly position to all the quail in the acres of natural areas beyond our property. Last summer a family came daily with their endearing long line of chicks following closely in a tight moving row. It might be a bit early as I haven’t seen any adults with chicks, only adults & junior sized quail.

      When i collected the eggs i saved them from being exposed to wild so i was lucky I could hatch 9 of them,,I didn’t see the parents but there is so many of them always in our property because our land is the most green land in our neighborhood and all creatures come here to get fruits n greens,,i love to see them all,,once coyotes and racoons were fighting over persimmon fruits,,we catch lots of cool videos in cameras

      Yes they fly when needed but they walk fast
      Enough to hide and run away.

    Beautiful. What temp you have in incubator? I tried incubating 10 eggs but none hatched. Japanese quail hatch every time. I don't know what I did wrong.

    • @marzisgarden
      @marzisgarden ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The set up was as default for chickens 99.5
      And 50-60 moisture for first 16 days then added more water and increased the moisture to 70. They hatched on day 22 as I remember.i found the eggs in our yard and the incubation already started by a female and was hard to do the rest counting correctly in my incubator but they wanted to come out so i was lucky and they are in the wild now anyways.

    Hello. How did you feed small babies? Our quails don`t want to eat

    • @marzisgarden
      @marzisgarden ปีที่แล้ว

      For wild quails they just eat on their own ,but for coturnix or button quails just grind wild bird seeds with extra dried mealworms and moist them on a flat small plate they will eat it. You can moist their feed for first 3 days and then two weeks of grind feed until they eat whole grains.

    I found 12 California quail eggs when we were trimming our rose bushes.(june 2020)
    I put them in my incubator to see if they hatch and surprisingly after 2 weeks 9 of them hatched.
    Only 5 survived after a week.
    They stayed inside for one night then i took them to my aviary garden where they were protected and being fed well . They got along well with my quails (coturnix and button quails) .
    I have a secured cage inside my aviary garden and they slept there at night but door was open and they were roaming and flying around freely.
    They were almost 4 months old that I caught them and released them in our property to go and join other wild quails and 4 of them came back(2 pair)
    the very next day and i saw they were sleeping behind my aviary garden entrance like waiting for me to come and open the door for them.
    I fed them but they kept the distance but wanted to get inside the aviary, i opened the chicken coop first and finally got them to go back where they grew up in.
    All my birds are free in my aviary garden and have happy life . My quails also get along with my dogs and i will make another video from my quails life.
    I let the California quails go to wild finally when the mating season started and after years they still come around the aviary garden and go through my composts outside and say hi and go.
    Check my shorts video from my golden pheasants that i added to my aviary in may 2022.

    This is exactly why we are not allowed to keep native birds without a permit. The risk of spreading disease when captive birds (such as these California Quail) are released into the wild. This could have been more successful if you prepared them for life on their own, like how to flee from predators and find their own water.

  • @jepper80

    They're handsome birds. We used to have them here but they seemed to have perished. Bird malaria or something else. I used to hunt them. We had several large coveys close to where I now live. I used to call them in with a Lohman quail call... chi-ca-go. males would always respond to the call. Don't know what happened to them Miss having them around.
