      So what exactly is the purpose of an inductor? How do we benefit from its property of storing energy in the form of a magnetic field?
      I think the video well explained how an inductor work but, not why is it necessary in a circuit

    You state that caps store energy in voltage and inductors store energy in current. Wrong inductors store energy in its magnetic field. Yes, the energy in an inductor is equal to 1/2 times the inductance times the square of the current, energy = 1/2LI^2 , for purposes of computation, but the storage actually is in the magnetic field.

    Interesting about the spark across the switch. I am planning to use a mechanical relay to turn a hotplate on and off. It has a standard 1500W stovetop coil heater element. I wonder if this coil will have enough inductance that I should be concerned about arcing in my relay?
    My guess is that the inductance is quite low but if anyone knows otherwise let me know.

    Now, use some nice transformer or inductor with the iron core (it may work without it, but...). First, make contact clean so that you can hold the electrodes. Briefly connect both electrodes while holding it's ends to the battery (small one, 3.7V, 9V, 12V...), and when disconnect - small shock. Show it to your friends and ask exact moment they "saw the stars". :D

    • @JCcanU
      @JCcanU 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Capacitor hold a charge , till it is discharged , that is why working on a TV Microwave or appliance you first ground it out , a 220 volt 15 amp capacitor can kill you .

    • @MilanKarakas
      @MilanKarakas 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JCcanU The same thing with inductor - it hold magnetic field while current flows. When rapidly current stop flow - magnetic field collapses as fast as stray capacitance allow it. If capacitor is in parallel with the inductor, then it slows down rapid magnetic field collapse, thus producing less voltage difference at the coil outputs. Grounding one end of the inductor will not prevent anything. There is also no "15 amp capacitor". Capacitor store energy and it is expressed in Joules, and it has letter for energy 'E'. Thus, E=1/2 V^2 * C (one half times square of the capacitors voltage times capacitance).

    It is interesting to discuss what was said at 1:25 through the statement," Generates a voltage that resists the current coming from the source!". In the diagram shown at 1:25 it is clear that the current of electrons is shown going into the positive terminal of the battery and they are shown going out of the negative terminal. This is obviously correct. Then " current coming out of the source" means that it is coming out of one terminal and going into the other of the source!!!! Then there are two arrows at 1:23 shown going in the same direction which presumably refers to the current and then another set of arrows going in the opposite direction. Well, the fact that the electrons are emerging from one terminal and entering through the other to mean would require the arrows showing the current to be in opposite direction to represent the entering and emerging of electrons from the source! Perhaps I am being too fussy!

    Would a correctly sized capacitor across the inductor prevent the spark from occuring?

    • @gerardvaughan1847
      @gerardvaughan1847 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      But there would be a Splat at turn-on then, since the lamp filament will be cold and low resistance.
      With a C across the coil - or switch - the result is just like a hammer hitting a Spring. The softer the spring, (bigger C) the longer the pulse, and the lower the peak force, volts.

    Why does an inductor able to be induced voltage by using a DC supply? Since DC flows only one direction and has a constant magnetic flux. Doesn't that mean the rod cant be able to induce voltage according to faradays law as it needs alternating current to do so?

    What an authoritative sounding Get.
    Michael Faraday discovered the law of magnetic induction. I.e. that a CHANGING magnetic field causes a voltage in a loop, or circuit encompassing that changing field.
    The voltage, e, in Volts will be equal to the number of Webers of flux change per second - in each and every loop around it. It is that simple.
    N.B Iron saturates towards 1 Weber/m^2, i.e. more magnetising force H, amp-turns/metre, will not make the increase in magnetic field strength, (B,) ( flux density(Wb/m^2) ), that it did at lower flux densities.
    Inductance is exactly analogous to Mass in mechanics, if Voltage is analogous to Force (Newton's), and current (amperes) is analogous to speed.
    The relationships are precisely the same, Viz,
    Induced EMF, e = N.dFlux/dt
    Force, f = M.dv/dt
    L (Henry) is defined as flux-turns per ampere, If Flux is measured in Webers. So if, for instance you double the number of turns around a given iron core, you get twice the flux for the same current as before AND, twice the number of turns, so you have Four times the inductance - as long as the iron does not get Saturated !!
    Inductance proportional to N^2

    Is there inductance in DC circuits? The source is DC if I'm not mistaken.

    • @AndyWJP
      @AndyWJP 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The inductance is a value attributed to components within the circuit. So yes. Any wire/coil has some inductance. At some point you will apply or disconnect the DC source, and then apply an impulse to the circuit. In the stable (DC) situation, all of the inductors have zero resistance, and all of the capacitors have infinite resistance. In between, where we have some AC current, there will be out of phase reactances coming into play to cause oscillations of voltage and spikes of current etc. Combinations of LRC values in a network.

    T= R.1 * XL
    R1is resistane of lamp
    XL = resistance L (coil) henry= H
    So ..... F= 1/ R1x XL
    : R1= 220ohm
    XL= 100uH = 0.001Henry
    So as = 1/0.22=4.5sec

    It is nice speaker. But, there is so difference here, you use DC voltage. But the inductor is considered as short circuit in DC, where V=L*di/dt, and there is no change in DC voltage or current. However, if you use AC source, I completely agree with you.

      Inductance just does its thing regardless. This bloke explained nothing. Inductance is Flux-turns per Ampere. The EMF (volts) opposing the current is Always L, the inductance in Henry's, times the rate of change of current.
      Inductance is the analogy to Mass in mechanics.

      no, but a metal core increases inductance using less turns in a coil

      a 5-turn coil with a metal core can give 2 Henries

    wait, so if i run a 20mhz at voltage ac i can expect a discharge bolt out of the blue, so this is why people put a arc pole near the coil to discharge to earth any spike that comes off when switching off, i have a three phase induction heater on it's way so i can expect a massive arc bolt at tripple the voltage spike arc off to bolt hopefully it won't cause a earthquake, i'll go easy and try to remember this spark off end thing each time i might put a warning note in vivid permanent marker to keep back when switch off , thanks you so very much i nearly for got about that, i might tone it down

      The E-cig doesn't care about the type of battery you use. It only cares about its shape (if it has a battery cavity), the voltage, and current supplied. If the AA has the same voltage and current rating as the Lithium, it will function the same. If not, you need to convert the battery power to an acceptable operating range for the device.

    Sorry, you state that T=L/R but don’t bother to explain what L and R stand for. If you are going to try to teach as it appears that you are, then you need to explain everything and not just assume that everyone watching knows how it all works. If I knew, I wouldn’t have bothered to watch someone sprouting that they were capable to teach what inductance is and how it works. A half done job is ether never started. Pity, I was hoping to learn something but obviously I need to look elsewhere. Reminds me of a physics teacher I had in high school whose attitude was, I don’t need to explain how I got that formula, you just have to accept that it’s true because I told you to. Cool, made me hate physics for years and made my studies for my pilots licence that much harder. Glad I’m better now but you just gave me a relapse. Sorry, 1 star at best

    The whole explanation is compromised because you make the mistake of asserting magnetic poles. There is no such thing: only loops of magnetic field (divB=0). It is the field lines, more properly the flux , INSIDE the coil, which leads to the phenomenon of inductance. Otherwise OK.

    Hey wait!...you said if the open the switch and stop the flow of current, the electro magnetic field will diminish rapidly and simultaneously release energy in the form of VOLTAGE? it's supposed to be IN THE FORM OF CURRENT because inductors store current and not voltage. Capacitor stores Voltage. I think there's a slight mistake in your narration. In the later part of your explanation you said it correctly that capacitors store voltage and Inductors store current, both of which are still of course energy. Please don't get me wrong...I am not being sarcastic...I just noticed something that needs correction in your narration. Peace Bro!!!...BTW just a suggestion, it's better to show the circuit in parralel connection 'coz it's easier to be understood than series connection although both are correct I know.

      john john what a piece of shit you are...not everybody understands it the first time especially if they've not been in touch with the subject for a long time. You're probably in school learning this stuff and yet you needed this video to make sense of what you're being taught in school. Your IQ is definitely below 90 I'm sure.

    The stupid loud intros and background music is not necessary and not appreciated by most viewers . It puts many people off watching otherwise interesting videos....

    Poor Pictorial ! The electron flow, (- balls ) , should be miniscule when switch closes : say 1 electron /10sec,.
    S_L_O_W_L_Y increase to say 10 electron/sec.

      Unnnnnnn-Believable!!!
      Surprised?.......... (NO)
      Instead of wasting time negatively commenting on a irrelevant point, Would it have KILLED you to show some kind of appreciation for the effort, time, and knowledge this {TH-camR} willingly added to the vast amount of educational information already available for ALL to benefit from?????
      Don't get it twisted....... (YOU) just like everyone else, is entitled to his or her own opinion. I mean DAMN!!!!
      Following your....🤔Negative comment, you (COULD) of followed up after saying something like, " Didn't care too much for the intro (but, overall information was great, good, well put, easy to understand. Thanks." or SOMETHING of the sort.
      This is PROOF, of how SPOILED, most of (The World) is today. (Expecting) everything to be in a (P.C.P.)(PERFECTLY CONVENIENT PACKAGE). Traditionally dressed up. In my (OPINION), {AFTER} recalling IF..... the intro was actually bad or not, the next thought that came to my mind is...., "WOW!!! What an ungrateful person!" Just by the (OPINION) you left. We ALL know how (S.S.S.) Super Stupidly Sensitive, the world is nowadays..........soooo, just a
      Reminder: "I am NOT, trying to "grill" you, or nor is it my intention to talk down upon you, Mr. Trobo. I'm just simply exercising my right to voice my (OPINION), As you have done so. May (COMPASSION) be something that you learn to strengthen, my friend. Salutations.

      You certainly have a bigger emotional investment in your comment than I had in mine.
      I regulary praise a lot of the you tubers hat I watch and I agree that this time my comment was a bit tacit. Ok. I admit that I didn't wrap my suggestion in cotton balls, but it was far from aggressive, and even I will say, far from insulting. It was just a practical suggestion. Insensitive? May be, but not mean and destructive. Just tacitly expressed . Barren thoughts, not mean. The rest, you added.
