    That's an amazing price for those speakers, it's a great time for people getting into audio, you can put together a great sounding system and not go broke doing it. Another great review

    Thanks for reviewing these. There's so little out there on these speakers. I bought them two weeks ago when I saw the sale price to evaluate along with a few other pairs of speakers. I was looking for some validation that they did sound good. I haven't owned decent speakers for about 15 years. My reference point recently has mostly been several pairs of cheap tws earbuds, so any speaker is likely to wow me in comparison. I'm replacing the tiny sounding, but wife approving aesthetics, Orb Audio speakers that replaced my large three-way floor standers around the time I got married and was encouraged to find something not so visible.
    I was thinking these sounded on par to the Polk S55s (when both are crossed over at 80Hz with a sub) I'm also testing out (and which my wife has said are too big) which seems in line with your comment on the S20s in comparison. Maybe I'm not so crazy thinking so and can actually trust my ears. Watching movies with them last night, I was getting great imaging and depth. Based on you, I was thinking of busting my budget and trying the Elac References. I'm feeling safe with the Wharfdales now, staying cheap and getting bang for the buck (plus the white ones blend in well with the wife's decor). I do have the Q150s showing up tomorrow. I was also looking at the RSL CG5s which are on 'blemish' sale for $250 each ($500 a pair). I'm tempted to try the Emotiva's, but a bit worried about return shipping if I don't choose them (or if my wife calls them too ugly). At $229, if I need to spend $50 to return them, I'd almost be better off keeping them.
    You started this channel at just the right time for me. I appreciate your approach to reviews and target price range. You're listening to music I enjoy and can use as a reference point to see if I appreciate the same things when I listen to a speaker and trust your preferences as a match to mine. I enjoy how you go from babbling one moment to an insightful comment that describes what you're hearing without needing to be an expert at audiophile-speak. Thanks to you, I can actually understand some of what other reviewers say now. You've been a refreshing change from the other reviewers. I think there are a lot of us out there looking for good sound for less than a riding lawn mower. Thanks for being a guy just talking about speakers in that range with a sense of humor and not taking himself too seriously while doing so.

    My man, today is the eighth day of my experience with the Wharfedale Diamond 11.2's. I have done some things with them such as toeing them in, angling them up by about an inch, as well as making some equalizer adjustments on my receiver. Today I was listening to Miles Davis' "All Blues" and it was beautiful; it almost rocked me to sleep as I listened to the nuanced piano strokes and the brushes sliding across the skin of the drums. These speakers are just a little better than my Polk RTI A3's, and I don't make that claim lightly. I love my Polk's but these things are serious. I don't hear any sibilance, they don't tire me out, and I look forward to listening to them everyday. They are the perfect mix of warm (like a heating pad on the back of the neck at just the right setting). Last night, I put the covers on for the first time, and I must say that the imaging, sound stage, and overall performance of the speakers actually improved significantly. I won't be returning these! :)

    I have the original version of this speaker(with the foam surrounds). They definitely need a larger room and space to breathe, or the bass will take over. Heavy, 24" stands will help, and placement at least 2 feet from the back wall(4 to 5 feet is ideal). They actually behave more like a floor standing speaker, I believe their spec sheet states low frequency extension down to 40Hz. I stopped using them because of this, as my living room is only 14x15.
    I ended up getting a pair of PSB Alpha B1's, which are still available on closeout for $200(Audio Advisor). Great speaker for the price--as your tag line says, get them while supplies last! Love your reviews, and your dry wit--keep 'em coming.

    Once again another great video. I guarantee this channel is going to blow up pretty fast.
    Couple of things for your channel if I could throw out some unsolicited advice. Feel free to ignore any of it.
    I worry about your pace of releasing content. I worry about your ability to crank out quality content without you getting fatigued, AS WELL AS us consumers getting fatigued and losing interest as well. On top of all of that I worry about you being able to source speakers to keep up the pace you are at. You'll go broke even as the cheapaudioman! Personally I think that 1 to 2 videos per week is a good sweet spot.
    Another thing that I would really like to see from you is a category on aesthetics/build quality. You have done some nice shootouts and there have been some speakers in the shootouts that were really close acoustically. I know that speakers are for audio, but when you have to live with a big wooden box in the home it IS something that we all have to consider, and it could be the tie breaker for a few of us out there.
    Recommendations for a few more test tracks. Sabrina Claudio has some amazing stuff. She has the most smoky jazz/R&B vocals and her music has these dancing bass lines that are great for revealing speakers. Also are mastered very well. Same with the Singer/Songwriter LP. She has some amazing stuff that is mastered really well.
    Praises. Among many things that you do well, you have a really good balance of content with humor sprinkled in. Many other channels that go that route tend to lean in too heavy on the humor and it just becomes chinsy. You have it pegged.
    Anyway, great channel. Keep up the good work. I'll certainly be dropping by!

    Nice review. And if you can find the V1 with high performance foam and the WFR tweeter (now replaced with a simplified version) - definitely jump on it!
    That foam was designed to fit that specific kevlar cone and work in unison, it has the longest throw on any mid/bass driver I ever owned, and I owned quite a few, including 3 previous Diamond series.
    But Wharfedale succumbed to the Internet-induced stigma, from people who are still to this day comparing a foam surrounds from 60es and 70es to the new ones, which is made of completely different material. Hence the rubber on the D11 V2 speakers, was told this by the Wharfie distributor himself.

    These are fantastic, just got them in White...a pair of 11.2's/ 11.cc LCR. I'm a legacy 12v guy by backround, have Bower's and Wilkins in my S90 now that i listen to daily. I have done various monster installs of Dynaudio, Focal's, Rainbow Audio, as well as DiY Scanspeak, Morel and Seas drivers...driven by beautiful Class A/B amplification Robert Zeff designs, as well as DLS, Arc Audio, TRU amps, Audisson Italian amplifiers...man i even had a tube preamp source at one point in my Nissan Maxima 15 yrs ago.Good ole days, great toys, then life happens...you have a mortgage and raising good kids are expensive. This is why Randy cheapaudioman's work is awesome and he's a great resource to many. Having not dumped a ton of money into my HT in many years outside a Klipsch Synergy and PSB Alphas, i bought these out of curiosity for a quality Brit bookshelf, and i will say i'm exceptionally pleased with the sound expression and tonal quality of the 11.2 bookshelves. This is a perfect example of a point of diminishing returns/splitting hairs speaker. You can spend $600, $1200 or $3600 on bookshelves that are simply marginally 'different', not any better and possibly worse in your conditions. Anyone that grabbed these for $200 and is feeding them from a nice 50-100w per ch amplifier is living the audiophile life. Enjoy the music brothers and sisters. Great channel Randy!

Sat down this afternoon and put on some of my favorite tracks and they sound unreal! A window into the recording. They disappear completely. The bass is FAST and there when called for. They play very loud without strain as well. A steal at $199. I've been swapping an old pair of JBL S38's and Paradign 5SEII's before these. I watched your review of these speakers last night and this morning I got up and found them on Amazon for $199 with a promised delivery date of today. I got them about 6:30 this evening, and after I moved my Polk RTi A3's to another position I hooked them up and let them run for a couple of hours. I must say that the bass is deeper and fuller and the separation is better, but the jury is definitely still out. Yet, for $199 for a brand that has been producing quality products for years, I figured I could not lose.They are paired to a Pioneer VSX-LX 104. So I am using my Polks as the surrounds (the Polks are replacing Pioneer BS-22's), the Pioneer floor speakers from my original system on the height, and the Diamonds as the fronts. They are beautiful speakers but the Polks are sexier. I will do a video soon to give my first impression.

      @@cheapaudioman Thank you for the reviews and for the reply. I am on my way downstairs to play with them for a little while. By the way, do you think that the source music is played from should be considered when reviewing speaker systems? I was just wondering if you have noticed it. Thank you!

    My goodness these are delightful speakers! 😃 As for vocals, immediately tested them with Chris Cornell's Prince cover of "Nothing Compares to you" and Adele's "When we were Young (Live at the Church Studios)", Charles Bradley's cover of Black Sabbath's "Changes" (check them out sometime!). Not only are the vocals really good the speakers center image and stage fairly well i found. This speaker does raw , soulful vocals, acoustic music with great articulation. Sound is cohesive, and always projects in the listening space as opposed draw attention to the speakers. I asked my son and wife where they hear the sound from eyes open and closed....I cracked up as I watched them walk over to the center channel to realize no sound was coming from it haha. In 2ch stereo without a sub they provide a quite nice full sound with surprisingly good bass and mids, with a desirable off axis response . I concur a sub is not required with these for 2ch listening and music auditioning. The 11.cc center is quite nice as well, watched The Mandalorian last night to test out the new LCR. I believe it's a Peter Comeau designed speaker, a highly regarded speaker designer. I tried the Quad S2 against my Focals on high end amplification but returned them as I got too flat a soundstage even though they were more transparent and resolving...and analytically dry. Great for movies but music wasn't as much to my liking, at least not for $900+tax. At $199, I can live with it but I think the 11.2s will do better. I can give up a bit of resolution and transparency for a more enjoyable music listening experience. Weird but there is the possibility that too much of a good thing can yield lessor results. Opinion, that is all.

      @nc3419 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@votive3946 Quad S-2 also is his design which I tried but sent back. While the most resolving and transparent speaker I've had, it was too dry sounding with a flat soundstage in my room and equipment. Brighter amps gave it some help but the flatness remained. Interestingly enough, it's sound signature reminded me of Infinity R152 I briefly had in my system. Nothing wrong with that sound if that's what one prefers. I like my Focal Prestige Chorus while Tharbamer, another well regarded reviewer, didn't like the Focals sound and preferred the Quads, and Wharfedales, among others. Hi Randy, I have heard almost every generation of the Diamond series by Wharfedale. Back in the day my friend had the original Diamond and at the time they were pretty darn good especially for their size. I have heard the Diamond 2nd ,3rd ,4th ,5th , 8th and 10th generations also own the 75th Anniversary 9.1. All of the above were a great value when on sale. The new 12 series intrigues me as they were designed by a new designer , Karl-Heinz Fink, he has changed the cone material from Kevlar which it has been for the last few versions, to a chalk/poly blend cone which ironically is closer to the original cone material used in the generation 1 to 4 in some ways. I don't think that is a phase plug but I might be wrong. Gently push on the bass driver, does the center of the speaker move with the cone? if so it's a dust cap which is attached to the cone but if only the cone moves and the center stays fixed it's a phase plug and it will be a solid chunk attached the pole piece of the magnet assembly. Starbucks Winter blend, 18% cream 1 tsp sugar here. Welcome to the Wharfedale family. Cheers

    Regarding the Wharfedale 12 series, I believe that Wharfedale contracted with Karl-Heinz Fink who is the designer for Q-acoustics speakers as well as others. The material for the mid driver is polypropylene vs Kevlar on the 11.2s. How this all translates to final SQ I can't say but a speaker company usually tries things with incremental results. Polypropylene may be a cheaper alternative to Kevlar. While some say Kevlar is a preferred material over polypropylene for SQ, the new design is stated (as I recall) to have resolved that issue.
    But for less than half the price, it was an easy decision. As to which looks better, they both look good but the curved sides on the 11.2s give it a sleeker appearance and is said to have some sound benefits. If they were to redesign the speakers using a curved cabinet and still use Kevlar maybe the price would have to been higher than $499. A comparison will now have to be done, yes?.

    Finally hooked up the speakers and gave them a first listen. Not broken in if that matters but a virgin voyage using Nick Cave's album No More Shall We Part. These seem to be a speaker that blends warmth( low to low mids) with some coolness in the upper mids thru lower treble with some rounding at the upper registers. Pretty much as expected but I was hoping for a bit more here and there. Not bad for a budget series which the Diamond series are. There's ample detail and a decent presentation at the up to $500 price point and a good value at the large but brief price reduction.
    The good, its' lively enough with decent detail, at least on high end equipment. I may hook them up to my class D Aiyima (a bit warmer) which may help tame some of the shouty-ness which I think results from limitations of instrument and voice separation. I like when there is some space/depth between the sounds produced. It''s not totally a blend of sounds but the 11.2s don't display this as well as my Triangle Zetas and no where as well as my Focal 807s (expected). The Zetas are half the volume, use 5.25 in paper woofers and a titanium tweeter.
    The Kevlar woofer and tweeter of the 11.2s hold back some of the realism my two sets of speakers are capable of given their overall tonality. The 11.2s have decent bass without sounding muddy but the bottom port pressurizes certain lower frequencies which make it sounds overemphasized and a bit loose, perhaps some chuffing. Tonality is OK for its' budget status but the Triangles and Focals do it better. Against the less expensive Focal 706 which I tried, I think the instrument separation is similar. Those Focals however give a bigger, taller soundstage but instruments sounded a bit stretched but also was more 3D like, so the 11.2s fit in this budget category. I don't get any real sense of a full 3Dness with the 11.2s but they aren't completely 2D, overly laidback speakers either. They are a more forward sounding speaker for British monitors, more so than the Wharfedale 225s which are a warmer presentation given my memory of them. Also, the 11.2s don't sound small but still have a decently sized soundstage, the Focal 706s were just very, very large.
    The downward firing port produces some unnatural thumping but could be improved by raising the distance from the bottom of the speaker in relation to the bottom plate (see Tharbamer's procedure).
    I may let these settle and try them for movies and see if the tonality, separation improves. I think the sound is competitive with others but not class leading but I havn't heard them all so can't say if they are better or worse among their peers. Against Dali Spector, Oberons, I prefer the Dalis though a bit more laid back, they don't shout like these do on some passages and the tonality is better. Which sound would I prefer given the 225s...I don't know but I might pick the 225s for a more relaxed listen (bedroom). Each has their strengths and limitations and do some things similarly and differ in others. As to my current speakers, if one had to go it would be the 11.2s.
    I picked up two pairs in the event one was defective and that they would sell out before getting a swap. They did in fact sell out. While the drivers on the initial pair function, there is a marr on the finish of the outside of one speaker. So these will go back but I will let them burn in a bit to see if I want to keep the other pair sans an issue. Should never have gotten past QC so, anyone want to comment on their experience?
    I listen to voice and piano rendition first to check tonality and on music I am familiar enough with to check detail retrieval and instrument separation, among other speaker qualities. These dig up decent amounts of detail but don't have quite the tonality and other qualities I am used to but these speakers still perform decently overall and were a bargain for there discounted price.
    As to others' concerns on what Wharfedale did with replacing the drivers from their initial introduction, I cannot say if they kept the level of quality or if it's affected. I don't dislike them but haven't decided to keep them. If these were my first speakers I'd definitely be a happy camper. The marred finished ones will definitely go back but for now i will keep listening. I'll try them with Movies, shows as well.
    Addendum:
    Seem easy enough to drive, seemingly dynamic and voice via TV is good. Image is center focused. Might be a good desktop if spread out far enough.

    My man, I really appreciate your videos and the honest reviews you do. Because of your reviews I made one of the best purchases that I have made in a long time. In fact, I will say that got a steal! This is my second full day with the Diamond 11.2’s, and I am absolutely impressed. They sound better than my Pioneer BS-22’s (no comparison really). They sound as good as my Polk RTi A3’s. The bass on these is a little deeper, the A3’s are a little deeper in some respects. I think the travel from left to right and vice-bersa is better on the Diamonds, and they soundstage a little better on some songs. The Polks handle more power and they may be a touch better in the midrange on some songs. But for $199 bucks there is no chance of my returning them, especially since I wanted to replace the Pioneers anyway. I am now using the Pioneer Floor units as surrounds, and they are doing very good with that task.
    Like you, I am not a “lettered” professional, but after more than 40 years of listening to music on everything from JVC, Fisher, Marantz, Pioneer, Panasonic (Technic), and even Sanyo way back, I know what sounds good to me. So, again, I say thank you!

    • @cheapaudioman
      @cheapaudioman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I use back panel. Because if you go from the front and the speaker is 15" deep... well then you're not getting it closer than 15". From the back then you can get well... .ooooooo1" give or take. That just makes the most sense to me but I am by no means an expert. I've just listened to a bunch of speakers and I shove them up against the wall or pull them out until I get what "I" feel is a balanced sound.

    I do have diamonds 9.1 (very well considered as outstanding speakers for their price range). Do you think these 11.2 from Wharfedale can subsequently compete with the Debut B6.2?

      I think they are two very different speakers. The 11.2’s have way more bass and a richer midrange. The b6.2’s are way more analytical and the diamonds very buttery

    OK, so now that I'm getting sucked into caring about audio, when I never have before, I'm wondering how much of a role a particular amp or receiver plays in the final product coming out of a speaker, assuming you're comparing two amps in the same price range. I currently have an old A/V receiver that I'm using for listening-only, just using 2 channels and a sub. I'd like to replace it with something that is smaller, around 100 amps, that can handle airplay and bluetooth. Hope you can review some more integrated amps and receivers in the future. I saw the video on the marantz nr1711, but I'll never need all the extra surround and video stuff, just a simple 2.1 setup.

    • @cheapaudioman
      @cheapaudioman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you could update your receiver with a nice fairly priced DAC that includes all the latest bluetooth codecs. Amps do play a role for sure in sound quality but it may slightly move a warm speaker to being a bit more exciting or moving a exciting speaker to being more laid back but it doesn't dominate the sound signature all that much. Take a look at this DAC. Has the best bluetooth and will for sure improve the sound of your digital sources amzn.to/2LpkBiy Something a bit more affordable is the topping e30 amzn.to/37cSjAg but it doesn't have bluetooth

      Literally everything matters when it comes to quality of sound reproduction. If I was to rank them by basic things, it would be:
      1) The recording. By FAR AND AWAY most important thing is the sound of the source material.
      2) Speakers are by far the most important component in shaping the sound from the source. If you use a sub or subs, those are important but a bit less so than the mains unless you're really into bass-heavy stuff. But a crappy-sounding sub ruins freaking everything.
      3) Pre-amp & Amp are roughly equally important. If either are well below the quality of your speakers you will definitely not get the most from them you could. And that applies to many components of speaker performance: Loudness of course, but also imaging, soundstage, balance in tonality, tightness of bass, forward vs. laid back sound, warm vs. bright. They play a big role in eeking out the last bit of performance for sure.
      4) Anything else like DAC's and Cables ... unless you're rich or SUPER discerning, save money here and put it towards the first three. Cheers! Also, 100W, not Amps :)

    I love this channel and the audio reviews and information... This dude reminds me of Offerman from Parks and recreation... Though I never get a response back from my questions... But it can seem a bit overwhelming when you hear that like for an example The Sony SSC s5s are really good for the money and that in that price range it's a given you should totally get them...then the next review is on some speakers or just a little bit more maybe maybe $50 $60 more and then it's like all these are really good too these are really really good and then the next review these are really really good I mean there's some reviews where things aren't so good The pros and the cons and so forth but then you're trying to decide on what speakers to get and then you order the Sony's and then you hear a review about some other speakers they're just a little more maybe on sale maybe not and then you're like all these so these other speakers are better than the Sony oh I should have got those oh my God so yeah I'm just sticking with my Sony is making it work. not all of us can afford to have 10 sets of speakers and change them out and apparently there's a lot of people doing reviews and they all get like some free stuff sent to them so it's easy to do that when you're getting paid or making some money off of this but when you're just someone that loves music and you're just trying to have a better sounding system then a little bookshelf that you found at the thrift shop... And you want to make a one to $200 investment in speakers it's tough when there's like five or six or seven different choices and everything is just so awesome...lol... My choice is the SSCS5 and the SACS9 I've heard good and bad about them... But they are sounding pretty good with my little setup 20 watt per channel to channel setup so you know we can always wish we had a little bit of this a little bit of that something a little better and then you get a little better and then you want a little better more than that a little bit a little better more and more but we can't afford that when we can't afford to just keep buying speakers and going with the next best thing some of us maybe you can afford that some of us just got to go with that first selection and make it work for as much time until we save up and maybe upgrade at some point while some of us have a whole damn room of speakers that they switch on and off like you know some of us are truly on a budget and we just want to have a good nice sounding system knowing that there are far greater sounding systems out there. I appreciate the inspiration but it's hard to watch these videos knowing that I'm going to hear about something that's even better that maybe I didn't know about and I might second-guess and doubt that I shouldn't have got the Sony's when there's something else I might have and should have looked into and I don't think Amazon wants me to ship back everything I bought just to try out a whole different setup every month....lol.

    • @cheapaudioman
      @cheapaudioman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey, man. Thanks for the note. I don't get paid anything or get anything sent to me right now. The only money I get is from people clicking and buying on my links. Here are my picks for speakers by price around $100 - sony sscs5 or neumi bs5. Around $200 Elac Debut b5.2 Around , around $250 Emotiva B1+, around $300 KEF Q150, $400 Klipsch RP600M, around $600 elac debut reference. I know it's confusing as heck. And a system with the Sonys and a sub is all most people would ever need and anyone could be very happy with it. And... you shouldn't feel badly about returning something to amazon. I do it all the time because speakers and headphones are a really personal thing.

    These are at a similar price point now to the Airmotiv B1+. I don't have a fancy receiver and I'm not going to know how to set up the speakers exactly right (perfect angle, perfect distance from the back wall, etc.). I'm looking for a pair that will produce pretty good sound with little fuss. They'll serve (in a small living room) in stereo for music, and also as the front 2 speakers in a 5.1 surround system.
    Between these and the Airmotiv B1+, which pair would you prefer for my goals? Thanks in advance!

      Opposite ends of the spectrum. The Diamond 11.2's are very rich and thick on the low end while the B1+ are very lively and clear on the top end. Depends on your taste. I think that at $199 the Diamond 11.2's are one of the best deals out there right now amzn.to/3htNciS If you want the best clarity and detail on a speaker with still great mids and lows the B1+ is the way to go. emotiva.com?aff=9

    Love your reviews. I did not care for these speakers at all. When they were at their standard price - I got them and returned them. I would not likely get them at 199 either, but the fact that I paid more when I got them influenced my opinion of them to some degree.
    For me they were too receded with instruments that should have been more forward, too muddy, were terrible at low volumes and were too reliant upon placement. Enemimc with disproportionate bass is how I describe them.
    I continue to have coffee in hand when I sit down to check out your reviews.

      Elac, Klipsch, These, Bros. These do a lot of what the Elacs do but don't have quite the soundstage or detail. At $199 they do 90% of what the Elacs do though. Can be a bit much on the low end unless you can get some space from the wall but I don't mind that even closer to the wall. I'd rather have too much bass than not enough.

    I happen to have a pair of Wharfedale D320's which I bought earlier this year. While I enjoy much of the music palette offered up by the D320's they do fail miserably with piano notes. My Klipsch R-41M speakers reproduce piano notes beautifully. So, was wondering if the Wharfedale Diamond 11.2's also fail with piano music or if they are as accurate with piano music as the R-51M's you recently reviewed? Thank you for the review of the 11.2.

      If you want clarity, the Emotiva Airmotiv B1+ is an excellent choice. The Q Accoustics are also great. Some think the Elac b6.2 isn't very exciting on the top end. I've had two sets and I'd disagree. The emotiva has a ribbon tweeter and many believe (as do I) that there is a level of clarity provided that, in most cases, a dynamic driver simply can't. The B1+ is the clearest speaker I've ever heard. At $230 it's a great value if you can put up with it's different design emotiva.com?aff=9

      @@cheapaudioman I've had demoed the Martin-Logan Motion 15 speakers and liked the tweeter for its' live venue sound but thought the midrange driver held it back. Strangely it sounded exactly like Paradigm SE-1s I had at the time except on voices. Instruments sounded exectly the same. The MLs were more efficient but couldn't play loud without distorting while the Paradigms took all the power I could throw at them and still sounded good. Monitor Audio Silver series trounced both of them for detail and soundstage but were too laid back for movies as well as rock. So, there is a limit to what a folded tweeter can do and they aren't always better than dynamic speaker designs. It depends on all the components a designer uses within a given budget.
