Padma Shri Priyanka Chopra - WOW! What a scene! What heart? What kind of hear? 'Kashibai' - the women the world had forgotten. Her dignified and resilient power and nature made her the amazing women she was. This movie won me over and I fell in love with Kashibai - Mind you, Priyanka has done a TERRIFIC job portraying the small nuances of her character. She was lost, worried, slightly jealous and envious. Both well done!
kashibai is truly an unsung heroine...not only she accepted her husband 's infidelity..after his death she adopted their son shemsher Bahadur and raised him as her own...her sacrifice was highlighted in the movie..also priyanka nailed it !! superb acting 👌👍👏

Considering the period this was set in, it was more common and most people didn't consider it infidelity when men married more than once. Of course many women still reacted with anger - as many were justified to- but they reacted out of possessiveness and fear rather than because they thought of infidelity like we do today
No matter how beautiful or powerful bajirao & mastani's love story is...PC showed the true pain through which Kashibai would have gone through and honestly that is the highlight of the movie. Each and every dialogue delivery and expression of Priyanka makes you cry with her, and feel her pain. This, and her scene with her husband where she talks about preferring to lose her life than her pride....these two scenes are enough to understand Kashi's story, pain and PC brilliant performance!!

The most thing I loved about this scene is the "kaunsa dil kaisa dil" and "hame jitna bura bhala kehna tha humne keh diya". It shows that Kashibai was hurt by the two of them yet she doest not have the nature to demean them.She understood Mastani's position in the love triangle and still held respect for her. She was jealous amd hurt yet she let her huzband go and sacrificed her happiness for them. She held her head high made everyone know that she had a voice too. that era She is truely the embodiment of love and sacrifice. 😔

The royal women would attend programmes in darbar sitting behind a screen which would give them good view without outsiders knowing who were behind the screen. They would move only in palanquis and common public could never get to see them at all! So it was unthinkable of Kashibai to fall for another man! In fact, after Bajirao's untimely death she went on pilgrimage in North and South India and on return asked her brother to construct a Lord Shiva temple in her native Chas, which is still in good condition!!!

This scene uplifts Kashibai's character from the others! This scene predominantly depicts the dilemma she faces as - being a woman and then, the knowledge that Love cannot be bound by anything and that Bajirao and Mastani are truly in Love. As the wife , it is unacceptable to her, but the depth of Bajirao's and Mastani's love is something she acknowledges. The first 2 mins of the scene reflects what any woman would typically feel and say. The vituperative outburst is not what Kashibai is made of. So, this is used as a sarcasm to the prevailing norms of the society, wherein tradition, custom is given more importance than Following the Heart! The real Kashibai and her spirit comes into play when she emboldens Mastani to stay strong though there will be even harsher comments thrown at her by the society! This dialogue between the 2 women is so aesthetically done, that it maintains the Epic Quality of the Story and the Epic characters. Minus this understanding, it would have degraded into a cat-fight and a mediocre masala movie!
perfect analysis of this scene. The character of Kashibai is profoundly complex and multifaceted. Even the retorts and ripostes written down for her character in this particular scene conceal the ideologies of the society. How a ritualistic ceremonious wedding that abides by the ways of the society is regarded as legitimate......When Kashi says "yahan aise bematlab ki baatein nahin hoti." and Mastani replies "Toh phir aapka yahan aana bhi kisi matlab sey hi hoga." oh! the excellent wordplay. This reveals that in one way according to Kashi's assertion, Kashi or her character stands for the upholding of the tradition and the customs of the society. However that notion is softened and starts to fade slowly as the scene proceeds to Kashi being, more, herself than the Society when she encourages Mastani to not take the dirty comments made by people at her heart. There is also a little revealed about Rao's view of both the women in his life. As Mastani reminisces Rao calling her his inspiration and Kashi, his strength. There is a lot of difference between the word strength and inspiration. Symbolically I interpret this as Mastani being a philosophical epiphany of Rao's life. His muse, the song or the poem of his life. In one way, Mastani is also his addiction, his wine. Within her love he finds passionate romance. She is his perfect partner in the mirthful dance of their love. I think this is the reason why they have such Shayari type poetic dialogues when Mastani is injured after the war and Rao talks to her flirtatiously as they are alone in her chamber. Mastani, being Rao's so called "inspiration," brings out the sighing lover in him. Mastani herself, gives the fire and the spark to their(Mastani & Rao) relationship. Whereas, within Kashibai, he seeks strength and earthy stability. There isn't any fiery passion in their relationship but there is emotional strength and mental support. After all, Kashibai is the Peshwinbai, the daughter-in-law of Rao's home, Kashi is Rao's strong and lasting link to the his homely responsibilities, his duties as a son and a father and ultimately as a Peshwa because the whole peshwaai regards Kashi and Kashi alone as his legitimate wife, the Peshwinbai and the landlady of Shaniwaarwada. Rao can afford to be indulgent, irresponsible, madly and passionately in love with Mastani but in Kashi he seeks moral and emotional strength, she is his, both, empty and full reservoir. He gets stability from her and the chance to pour out his disturbances and his grievances, he can bare his emotional weaknesses in front of Kashi. As Kashi rightfully taunts him later saying "Unki(Mastani) aur hamari toh tulnaa ho hi nahi sakti. Humnay aapke saath raas leela jo nahi rachaai." This is my interpretation of Rao's view of both women. I do not expect you to agree with it. but yes, just 2 words make a big difference to me. Also as Kashi stands for the society's ideologies in this scene, but her true individuality as a woman, her dilemma and pain is beautifully expressed in the Kashi-Rao confrontation scene when they are blowing out the lamps and Kashi prohibits Rao to never come in her chamber again. That scene and Priyanka's acting are par excellence. Such subtlety in the smallest gestures and expressions is truly a revolution in Hindi Cinema.

This is why I love this movie- there's so much being expressed in the smallest, simplest gestures. Seeing so much more nuance than usual is just so refreshing! Apart from the intense flashback-climax-hallucination-death scene, I loved everything about it.

But I loved Kashi more than Mastani. She was a normal house wife and took care of her children and family members. She was not powerful like Mastani. But she had patients to face all sorrows. Deepika is still not natural, she still has a long way to go. She does have good expressions but there is no depth in her dialogue delivery. Sometimes i feel she's uncomfortable saying her dialogues. Priyanka seems more natural in both her dialogue delivery and expressions. Priyanka beats Deepika any day, any time.

This scene uplifts Kashibai's character from the others! This scene predominantly depicts the dilemma she faces as - being a woman and then, the knowledge that Love cannot be bound by anything and that Bajirao and Mastani are truly in Love. As the wife , it is unacceptable to her, but the depth of Bajirao's and Mastani's love is something she acknowledges. The first 2 mins of the scene reflects what any woman would typically feel and say. The vituperative outburst is not what Kashibai is made of. So, this is used as a sarcasm to the prevailing norms of the society, wherein tradition, custom is given more importance than Following the Heart! The real Kashibai and her spirit comes into play when she emboldens Mastani to stay strong though there will be even harsher comments thrown at her by the society! This dialogue between the 2 women is so aesthetically done, that it maintains the Epic Quality of the Story and the Epic characters. Minus this understanding, it would have degraded into a cat-fight and a mediocre masala movie!
perfect analysis of this scene. The character of Kashibai is profoundly complex and multifaceted. Even the retorts and ripostes written down for her character in this particular scene conceal the ideologies of the society. How a ritualistic ceremonious wedding that abides by the ways of the society is regarded as legitimate......When Kashi says "yahan aise bematlab ki baatein nahin hoti." and Mastani replies "Toh phir aapka yahan aana bhi kisi matlab sey hi hoga." oh! the excellent wordplay. This reveals that in one way according to Kashi's assertion, Kashi or her character stands for the upholding of the tradition and the customs of the society. However that notion is softened and starts to fade slowly as the scene proceeds to Kashi being, more, herself than the Society when she encourages Mastani to not take the dirty comments made by people at her heart.
There is also a little revealed about Rao's view of both the women in his life. As Mastani reminisces Rao calling her his inspiration and Kashi, his strength. There is a lot of difference between the word strength and inspiration. Symbolically I interpret this as Mastani being a philosophical epiphany of Rao's life. His muse, the song or the poem of his life. In one way, Mastani is also his addiction, his wine. Within her love he finds passionate romance. She is his perfect partner in the mirthful dance of their love. I think this is the reason why they have such Shayari type poetic dialogues when Mastani is injured after the war and Rao talks to her flirtatiously as they are alone in her chamber. Mastani, being Rao's so called "inspiration," brings out the sighing lover in him. Mastani herself, gives the fire and the spark to their(Mastani & Rao) relationship. Whereas, within Kashibai, he seeks strength and earthy stability. There isn't any fiery passion in their relationship but there is emotional strength and mental support. After all, Kashibai is the Peshwinbai, the daughter-in-law of Rao's home, Kashi is Rao's strong and lasting link to the his homely responsibilities, his duties as a son and a father and ultimately as a Peshwa because the whole peshwaai regards Kashi and Kashi alone as his legitimate wife, the Peshwinbai and the landlady of Shaniwaarwada. Rao can afford to be indulgent, irresponsible, madly and passionately in love with Mastani but in Kashi he seeks moral and emotional strength, she is his, both, empty and full reservoir. He gets stability from her and the chance to pour out his disturbances and his grievances, he can bare his emotional weaknesses in front of Kashi. As Kashi rightfully taunts him later saying "Unki(Mastani) aur hamari toh tulnaa ho hi nahi sakti. Humnay aapke saath raas leela jo nahi rachaai." This is my interpretation of Rao's view of both women. I do not expect you to agree with it. but yes, just 2 words make a big difference to me.
Also as Kashi stands for the society's ideologies in this scene, but her true individuality as a woman, her dilemma and pain is beautifully expressed in the Kashi-Rao confrontation scene when they are blowing out the lamps and Kashi prohibits Rao to never come in her chamber again. That scene and Priyanka's acting are par excellence. Such subtlety in the smallest gestures and expressions is truly a revolution in Hindi Cinema.

This is why I love this movie- there's so much being expressed in the smallest, simplest gestures. Seeing so much more nuance than usual is just so refreshing! Apart from the intense flashback-climax-hallucination-death scene, I loved everything about it.
