The single cut SEs are incredibly enticing to me and they have that wood grain on the back. It's nice the PRS does that SE line without operating a subsidiary like a Squier or Epiphone. Something about getting a quality budget guitar with the same name on the headstock seems cool to me.

So cool of PRS to do that for you! I'm buying a PRS as soon as the doctors fix the Ulner nerve damage in my fretting hand. I'm still hacking away, but it controls your Ring and Pinky fingers, so I've had to become tricky and more patient. It sucks actually, because guitar is the only thing that brings me joy. I hope and pray that I can be fixed. Thanks, Robert for all your videos and just being a welcoming face on TH-cam!! ✌️💞🕊️🤘🎸

I can’t tell the difference except in the appearance of the black back and my old head plate wasn’t black. I did get the se locking tuners but it’s not really necessary, I just like the look of the locking ones. Otherwise, it’s just a great guitar for the money, and money I can actually afford. Just before Christmas, PRS released a 1 time only batch of 58/15 LT pickups. These are the exact same, made in USA pups that come in the 594 Core series guitars. I say that because the S model 594, made in the USA, uses the import pickups the same as the SE models. That's confusing, but the S guitar is USA, and S pup is import. On purpose, not sure, hope not. Anyway, my intent to to buy a SE594 and swap the pups for USA 594 58/15 LT ones. IMHO, the pups are at least 50% of the voice of the guitar. They ain't cheap, $500! So for $1450 I will have an SE594 SC w/USA 594 pickups. ~$500 less than an S594 SC w/import pups, and ~33% the price of a Core 594 SC. We'll see, I could also put them in an S594 if I'm not happy with the first one. Sorry this got so long, and it is just MHO's. Thanks, 8) --gary

I'm guessing the 'black back" is at least partly because it makes the non-recessed cover plates on the back less obvious. With woodgrain back it would stand out big time. The veneers on these look very "fotoflame" - do they have any depth at all?

Just a theory here with no real self investigation behind it but maybe they do the black backing to the models or a certain select few that have blemishes or inconsistencies of one form or another on one side of the wood but not the other? This could help to get more usage out their woodpile. Just throwing that out there.

I hate to say it but I enjoyed the sound of the SE way more. I felt more character and dynamics in it. I’m listening on a good system that is the limited edition moon audio i5 amplifier only 250 made and limited JMLab focal be speakers with beryllium tweeters. My little bedroom system. I have two SE versions I love but I did as a guitar tech worked for anthrax and pantera tours customized the two guitars and set them up. One is the first year silver burst torero I put dragon one pups in and the other is the first year Santana with the original dime bag rail pups. Great guitars. But to me all guitars are great if they play and are set up right even if you just have to fret level them. It’s the player that makes them rock or not lol. I suck at playing unlike you heh heh. Just found you on a Hendrix search and on my way to look at more of your work here. Thanks for what good you do here. Want to try to play some Hendrix licks On my strat.

To my knowledge it's not a pickup SPLIT, it's a TAP at 75%. Tim Pierce actually had DG on his video talking about it. Or maybe it's a split AND a tap at 75%?
The language is very vague and while there is a huge difference between split and tap, many people often conflate the two. Indeed, even the PRS website for the DGT SE has a diagram of the various possible settings and they show a SPLIT humbucker in the diagram, but CALL it a "coil-TAP."
Regardless, I'm glad to hear this SE model passes muster from a person who really knows the Core model. The DGT SE might be my next guitar purchase (and my first and possibly only PRS.)

Thanks Robert. I’m glad you said these are going to be the number 1 SE. I was in the market to purchase either John Mayers silver sky SE or this one. I’m leaning towards this one in goldtop

Also!!! Yes I do agree I wish they would have address the wood grain and not the black back

I would 100% go DGT man these are amazing. ANd yeah I assume they are black backing it because the body is probably multiple pieces of mahogany to keep the cost down, but I dont know that for sure and it doesnt effect the guitar any.

I have a silver sky SE, and i don't mean to make your decision more difficult, but its excellent. I prefer it over any american strat ive ever played. In other words, theres no wrong answer here. Enjoy whichever you pick!

Thanks guys for making this super hard for me lol 😂. I might just go with the DGT the one things with my strats I never got too comfortable with is the volume knob so close to the bridge and pick ups. So much so I actually take the volume knob cover off of my strat. So at least with the volume and tone knobs, being away from the bridge and hum bucker a bit, it might be more comfortable, at least for me. Thanks guys

@@GlenCraytonJr dunno how much it matters to you but the volume knob is further away from the bridge pickup on the silver sky than it is on strats. It’s a small amount but significant at the same time.

How much of the core is the SE hitting? 80-90% from the sounds?

  • @justmehere6094

They HAVE to black back it, because it is almost certain, the body is built from 2-4 pieces, with a veneer on top, except the GT. To keep costs at this price point, they would black back, so they don't have to match the grains on the pieces, and or use less pretty Asian Mahogany. .

I wonder if the DGT SE pickups will sound good on the McCarthy Single Cut SE.
I love the looks and control layout and bridge, but prefer the pickups on the DGT 😁

I bet they would. Sadly PRS has never offered the pickups outside of buying the guitar. The DGT humbuckers in general are some of my favorite pickups.

@@RobertBakerGuitar Thank you for the reply 🙏
Btw, I would love to see you and Austin/Troglys colaboration again. Maybe on the McCarthy Single Cut SE? 💪🤘
