On Ngunja matu- It's very sweet ugali that has been created thru poverty. It's not a traditional food.
If a family had little of everything, and had no money at the particular time, a mother would mixed all the ingredients systematically to create food for the day. Of course it turned out better than would have been expected. With time it's continued being improved and accepted. When it was associated with poverty Ngunja matu- was not served in public. NB name Ngunja matu- means something one eats to enable one sleep and also shorten the dark hours. Those of us who came from poor backgrounds have gone thru introduction of Ngunja matu- and the art applied to improve it's taste and acceptability.
