Something I'd like to ask people who think the seller pays the tariff - why would they? If I am selling to the US, why would I PAY you to take what I'm making? I'd sell somewhere else to avoid that. Tariff impact: I’m an international trader, currently in China, after visiting Vietnam and Indonesia directly related to Trump’s election. We are expanding production out of China (this results in higher costs). If new tariffs go into effect, I’m confident China will devalue the currency to aid manufacturing exporters (max 10-15%). We will pressure Chinese suppliers to lower costs, but don’t expect much support due to their rising costs and struggling economy. We will pay more import duties, and if trade is disrupted could face significantly higher shipping costs (almost as scary as new tariffs for low value goods). We will cut margins, raise prices and discontinue products. The tariff is paid, not by the foreign manufacturer, but by the local importer. It is the importer who has to recoup the additional cost imposed by the government on that product. So simple you would think that even a genius like Trump would understand that.
As a former advisor to companies dealing with the red tape involved in declaring imported goods that incur tariffs, not only do they increase costs to the consumer, but there are often additional overheads related to completing those declarations that are passed on too. This isn't a theoretical scenario, it is information gained from actual involvement in the process of dealing with tariffs on behalf of businesses.
As a non American I agree that Trump is entertainment on the cost of the people. I really don't understand why people who are living in the US voted for him only for entertainment... Maybe they are so selfish that they don't care about others...
David, I hope Lisa K tells us all how Tariffs will make things better ! In 72 years I have never seen or heard of a tariff that didn't raise prices, any where in the World. Would love new info.
The whole argument of tariffs is to protect American jobs from going overseas something that happened under the democrats. It’s a major factor in why the democrats lost the election. Your argument of things getting more expensive is irrelevant to these MAGA people who don’t have the jobs to buy anything in the first place. It’s like I jack the price up from 1 dollar to 5 dollars but your income is less than 1. So the argument of it’s more expensive is irrelevant.

If there is a black, gay, or a woman in anything it's woke to them. I can't even take them seriously anymore when I see a comment or video with that term in it. Automatically makes someones opinion irrelevant.
Firstly ask the person what they mean with an example, then watch them change the subject when you agree that the example they gave is idiotic if true.
FDR was president during the period when the constitution had no term limits. Since then, the 22nd amendment places a clear limit of 2 terms (consecutive or not) and the GOP doesn't have the numbers to pull off a change to that. Steve Bannon is talking shit when he says there is a way around that, because it doesn't mention the word consecutive - it also doesn't mention the word light-sabre - that doesn't change the clear text.
as a newely minted 22 year old, even thought I was last in High school when I was 18, I still remember in the Required economics class to PASS high school, that Tariffs are taxes are on the IMPORTERS bringing the products into the country. (I.E U.S companies are charged Extra by the U.S government to bring something into the country from someplace else)
I graduated from high school in 1996. Do they not teach economics in school? I learned about tariffs and how they affect the economy and the average American. How do people not understand that
I graduated HS in 2007 in TX. There was no economics class. The only econ was a required micro and macro for a business degree at university level. So unless you have a business degree, if you graduated from a high school in Texas, you have no earthly idea about economics. I have convos when people bring up related topics and I can't help myself but correct people when theyre obviously wrong because I do have a BA in Economics. First reaction is anger, but then I get really specific to where they can tell, then all I get are eyerolls and it goes through one ear and out the other with them still believing a falsehood. Like arguing with an engineer about engineering.
I graduated high school in 1980, and we learned all about tariffs and lots of other things too. I am mystified at all the people who don't seem to understand tariffs. It seems like our education system must be deteriorating.
When the Democratic party returns to its power base, union labor and labor in general, we will again have success for The Working Man! When I look at a candidate and see if they're taking just as much money from the billionaires as the Republican candidate is, who do I think that politician is loyal to? They need to cancel all corporate dollars, we will notice! #UnionizeTheNation #UnionizeYourJob
The democrats don’t want tariffs, they want free trade with nations that don’t have the same if not worse workers regulations and rights. It’s why they lost the election. The democrats are a white collar party now days.

The thing people aren't thinking about is companies profits come at a percentage of goods sold so if the price of something goes up $50 it will go up $50 plus 30% if they are using 30% as their profit margin

Trump has said multiple times his model for America is the 1870s. That's when he thinks America was great. Not the 1950s and '60s when the American middle class was booming. The 1870s. It's why he is obsessed with tariffs. Because in the 1870s there was no income tax or inheritance tax, the government was funded primarily through tariffs. But the global economy is far different from what it was then. What worked then will not work now. And what was life like in the 1870s? It was called the Gilded Age, which sounds fancy, until you realize that gilding is just on the surface. Over 70% of the population was rural, mostly working in agriculture. Our industrialized farms of today would never employ that many people. But cities were growing rapidly as industrialization boomed. Cities were dirty, filled with pollution from the unregulated coal-powered factories. Workers, including children, worked 12 hour days, 6 or 7 days a week, in sweatshops and other dangerous or oppressive workplaces, for very low pay. There was virtually no middle class. Often, workers were paid in company scrip instead of money, housed in company dormitories, and had to shop in the company store (the only place that accepted the company scrip). Unions were rare, and when labor did try to organize, it was often met with armed resistance not only from the company, but from law enforcement. The federal government took over control of immigration for the first time, and the first mass ban of immigrants occurred in the 1880s (against Chinese laborers). And of course, the Robber Barons were ascendent. This is Trump's model.
Bob in India sells hats in America for $5. Bob gets tariffed and raises his price to $6 to recoup the cost. Steve in America sells the same hat for $5. Now he must only beat Bob's $6 price now. Steve takes full advantage and raises his price to $5.50. That's why tariffs skyrocket prices.
13 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1
That's why prices go up on EVERYTHING. Not just tariffed items. Trump knows this and is doing this all on purpose.
Being a furniture mfg and importer for over 35 years. Dealing with China and Vietnam since 2005, I can am an authority. There have been Duties which are import taxes put on all products by category from almost all countries. In furniture they are very high for some categories such as wood bedroom..When Trump imposed 25% duty which is on top of preexisting duties, on all Chinese products. All of my customers sent letters, some were willing to share with the factory, which we did in some cases. Which ultimately ended up having to raise their retail prices, costing the consumers more. In other cases where factories could not afford to share extra tariff, the factory increased prices resulting again in consumers paying the increase, which increased more because it also raised the preexisting duties based on shipment value. Combined with increased freight rates it hurt consumers and created start of inflation. Most chinese factories exporting to U.S. opened factories in Vietnam, Malaysia, Mexico, and Thailand. Still going through same Chinese companies.
So why can’t Americans make their own furniture? That’s the whole argument for voting for Trump. You make it sound like Americans can’t make furniture when they can put men on the moon.
@ for several reasons. main one is right average American can afford, cost of labor... even if Americans would work for $10 a day we don't have enough population to be a manufacturer force again! And you and I both know Americans cant work for $10 a day, let alone $10 an hour! Think about how often a person buys furniture, it is, if not, the most difficult sector of manufacturing to be successful . Even at the high end of the market, RH, PB most are there furniture, other than some upholstery is made in Asia or Mexico..

"The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the state because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government." In the case of Elon Musk, his companies have received billions of dollars in subsidies and other benefits. In 2015, the LA Times reported the amount was $4.8 billion. I'm sure it is much more than that now. And that does not include the billions in government contracts SpaceX has received from NASA and the military.
David, I dig that sweater. I'm not kidding. That is a beaut. I want one. And yeah, you know how tariffs work, and they are going to be really bad for not only the US economy, but for the world, potentially sparking an international trade war, with retaliatory measures everywhere. If that happens, it could be very difficult to unwind. And it could potentially increase international tensions which have the potential for conflict. That Trump is an idiot was on full display these last couple of days. Really terrifying what's coming down the pike in a month or so. Hopefully, America and democracy will survive it, but I'm really not very optimistic. 4 years seems like an eternity.
My biggest concern for the 2028 elections is if America continues its plutocratic trajectory, and more and more Democrats keep getting bought by the right-wing. An unfortunate number of them have already turned against their own constituents (e.g. the trans community) and have no interest in actually promoting extremely popular policy decisions like a universal public option for healthcare. I really hope that they pull themselves together, though since the election, a lot of them have become more transparent in their grifts. It sucks that a lot of them can campaign on certain policies or moral positions, only to perform a 180 once they are actually elected.
I heard we , the US, already have a tariff on a really well made Chinese Electric Car that sells for about $30,000. We don't have any Chinese EV's for sale in the US because the current tariff would raise the price to $60,000 in the US. Europeans and Russians are driving this vehicle and it seems to be a good product. Just a comment on tariffs and who would be hurt by trump tariffs.
As someone born in 1968 I am well aware how Tarifas work. In very simple ways think of them like this. The cost of something goes up for a company. Does the company eat that cost, or do they pass it on to consumers? Anyone saying the producer of the product is going to pay the price hike has no idea how business actually work.

They must be slapping their heads in Australia... "Crikey mate.. why didn't we think of that? I work with a Trumper who has no idea how they work either, I told him everything will go up at least up to 20% in costs to us, he claimed "no once gas drops everything else will go down" wtf?
Tariffs are for slowing a flood of cheaper foreign products from destroying a domestic market. That domestic market went to China, Mexico and Canada 40 years ago.
Accurate on the normal intent for tariffs.. protect domestic sectors from undercutting from foreign imports. Targeted protections for specific products or sectors.. not EVERYTHING. BUT, what US markets went to Canada ?? The US tends to push out or take over many Canadian sectors... Canada is such a much smaller market and population, what industries do you think that Canada took over from the consumer demand of the US to destroy (US) domestic production?
Weird thing about the Canada tariffs is we mostly send the U.S the raw materials for the production of products in America, not the products themselves. We even buy the refined gasoline, diesel and byproducts from are our own heavily discounted oil back from America.
"Tariffs are for slowing a flood of cheaper foreign products from destroying a domestic market" It doesn't destroy the domestic "market"... The market is healthy even if flooded by foreign products, because low prices and offer vs demand equilibrium is what makes any given free market healthy... Tariffs have the opposite effect... Trump's Chinese washing machine tariff is a great example of that... The US production uptake was negligible, and even US produced washers and driers went up in price because of market imbalances... Also, say goodbye to your Dollar Stores that won't be able to survive a 25% Chinese tariff that will affect most of the various products sold there that the US industry can't logistically compensate for...
I'm stating what tariffs can do, not what trump thinks they'll do. He's an idiot. The bulk of finished products shipped to the US were products made here. That's why there's a trade imbalance with the 3 countries. What maga and Prez Dim Bulb think is that domestic production will appear out of nowhere and begin competing. That ability left 40 years ago, and would take trillions of dollars of investment for it to return with a modern infrastructure. Never gunna happen.

To complex for Trump and other persons of his "intelligence".

Same. Perhaps she will soon link her paper she wrote on the matter. /s
Tariff is the most beautiful word in the dictionary. That is until they find out what that word means.
The amount of Trump's knowledge of anything presidential would barely cover the bottom of a thimble.
Even more impressively, he has retained that level of profound ignorance despite occupying the position (I refuse to say "doing the job") for four whole years.

I graduated from high school in 2011, and we kind of touched on tarrifs in economics class.
I graduated high school in 1980, and we learned all about tariffs and lots of other things too. I am mystified at all the people who don't seem to understand tariffs. It seems like our education system must be deteriorating.

There are a lot of people who have opinions about everything but do not understand how everything works. You have haters because you are challenging how they think or how they want to think and it upsets them. Keep up the Great research and work David!
USA was great after stealing the Gold and Oil from Mexico.
USA and IMF ( USA) have most gold, and USA most oil.
Add the living conditions, sanitary situation and lack of healthcare, and yes this is exactly what will make us great again?

Bob in India sells hats in America for $5. Bob gets tariffed and raises his price to $6 to recoup the cost. Steve in America sells the same hat for $5. Now he must only beat Bob's $6 price now. Steve takes full advantage and raises his price to $5.50.
That's why tariffs skyrocket prices.
That's why prices go up on EVERYTHING. Not just tariffed items. Trump knows this and is doing this all on purpose.
Just about nailed it
If Steve is selling the exact same hat from China, the tariffs are paid by the importer, if that’s Steve it’s already costing him $6
If Bob lives in India and selling hats to America they’re still $5
The tariff is not on exports
@@Poppy-p2 Bob gets his $5 but the hat sells in the U.S. for $6 after it's tariffed.

@@TekkznIt is the ultimate goal. Make are own everything. Stop exporting and importing anything. Then we will be great again.

I’d love for David to explain to Lisa why other countries have tariffs on American goods.
I hope Lisa calls in!!💙
Good to see David do this.He has become the voice of reason we all need.Merry Xmas.😎
PILLOW ! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Funniest name I've ever heard 😅😅
Tariffs, yes they will benefit from them. They will have a subsidy to prevent harm. Remember the 28 billion given to farmers. Is this good? No.

As someone born in 1968 I am well aware how Tarifas work. In very simple ways think of them like this. The cost of something goes up for a company. Does the company eat that cost, or do they pass it on to consumers? Anyone saying the producer of the product is going to pay the price hike has no idea how business actually work.

"Tariffs are for slowing a flood of cheaper foreign products from destroying a domestic market"
It doesn't destroy the domestic "market"...
