    I like to tell people that on fast tables like a 7ft Diamond, don't slow roll, and don't try to hold anything. So like for the 7 ball in rack 3, hit it with a full stroke and go 2 or even 3 rails back and forth to get on the 8. Great video as always!

    • @drewvonporte
      @drewvonporte 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thats good advice. With Diamonds, I’ve always leaned the other way. Since the table plays so true, I know I can slow roll and not get screwed by table roll or something… but what you’re saying makes sense. Something I’ll keep in mind!!

      Maybe I should listen to my own advice 😬
      If you are not as experienced as your competition in your league (idk, just assuming based on you asking advice! No judgment here!), go check out this match on MBM Billiards youtube channel he posted last night.
      My opinion: one dude is like 1-200 fargo higher than the other. The younger, less experienced, guy uses some good maneuvers (safety play, 2-way shots) to stay alive and get racks on him. A great example in this situation!
      Sometimes your team just needs a few points out of you to take the W, so every single rack helps in the Master’s format 💪🏼 keep shootin man 👊🏼 I’ll try and do better next time!

    Love the added stats... what about changing Errors to Misses? That seems to be more in line with what you're actually tracking. Thanks for the videos.

    • @drewvonporte
      @drewvonporte 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Finally someone chimes in haha!
      Idk, errors sounds better to me sorta? Also, it does capture when you completely mess up shape, and then miss.
      For example, you run the table, and hide yourself from the 8-ball, forcing you to kick at it. Sure, it’s a miss, but the bigger issue was misshaping it. Calling it an “Error” does broaden it.
      I was initially trying to subjectively separate a missed shot and misshape but it was too difficult. Error covers both. Thoughts???
      Thank you so much for the feedback!!

I’m a SL 7 in 8 ball and was a 8 in 9 ball but haven’t played 9 in over a year due to my wife having our 2nd kid but once he’s running around freely, I’m getting back to 9 and may join the masters bc it looks like something I’d enjoy. I’m not sure what SL you are but if I was watching you play somewhere I’d assume you’re a 5 based on the poor positioning and shots you were missing, could’ve just been an off day, everyone has them. I suggested it in an older video, so I’m not sure if you saw it; but I would try moving your bridge hand 0.5-1.0 diamond closer to your bridge hand on the break. If so you might be able to hit your target contact point on the cue ball. It worked for me (s/l 7 as well).

    Hey Drew. I was 9 Skill level in 9 ball.
    I used to play in the APA master League a lot.
    TIP
    Always let your opponent chose what format they want to play first 8 Ball or 9 ball
    The reason behind that is mostly like they will choose the format they are better at playing.
    So if you can beat them at that format you will most likely win when you play the other format.
    Caution.
    When playing someone that you never played or not sure how they play and you get to choose what format to play first.
    Always pick 8 ball because you can never lose you will still get to play 9 Ball.

I just can't get used to the carbon shafts. My other friend bought the $2500 Predator with the Revo shaft and it just has too much deflection over the length of the table. And, I can't "see" the shaft in my vision. Because it is black, it just disappears in my mind's eye which disturbs me. But, I see so many pros using carbon shafts now and they play very, very well with them. I wish you luck in the rest of your APA season.

      LESS THAN 11mm?!…. I gotta think you meant “less than 12mm” 😅
      Yeah, honestly, I pushed away the carbon fiber shafts for awhile. I like wood (thats what she said) period. Like the way it feels, like the way it looks, like the way it plays, and I appreciate the tradition of playing with wooden cues.
      … But I needed a catalyst for change, and I splurged on a big fancy predator cue with the revo 12.4. And I annoyingly am playing better than I ever have. From practice and training most likely, but hard to knock the carbon fiber now 😔

    I am only a little way in but you mentioned safeties and kick outs. I used to pride myself on making really difficult shots but my match play stalled until I started playing regularly with an ex snooker player. Now, I get as much enjoyment, if not more, with great safety play.
    Also want to mention he really helped with using follow shots much more, even 2 and 3 cushions, as opposed to draw shots that I liked to use.

      After this, I spent time on my safety play, that you will see in upcoming matches. I remembered that I love One Pocket because of the safety play and cue ball control…. Why not see that perspective in 9-ball?? And it helped me.
      We also started playing Kick-Safe, which helped me see the safeties easier with repetition!
      Regarding draw/follow, I will remind you we are on a 7’ foot table. And I like to keep my game kind of compact on a 7’ table… but yes, I still probably draw too much for most peoples’ taste 😁

    in the 1st one (00:22) (after you ended up on the wrong side of the 7 and 1): 1) the tangent line of shooting the 7 in the side pocket causes the cue ball travel to the long rail above the 9 ball. tangent line control must be your first instinct. 2) If you aren't confident in controlling the tangent line still, then you should just shoot the 7 into the bottom left corner, using only top (rolling cue ball), to get an easy shot on the 1.

But the easiest way here is to roll the 9 for the 11 in the lower left corner. Ideally you the. Follow the 11 for the 10 in the side, then 12 in the lower left. Easy out. Or if you roll too much on the 9, 11 in the side then still follow above.

    Drew, I have just one piece of advice for your game. You tend to, as you have admitted to, miss some easy shots. In your case it's not at all because you don't know how to aim or to play the game. You're thinking about all these things to make the shot work the way you want it to work, but your last thoughts have to be making the shot! You have to be willing to sacrifice your ideal leave for a (slightly) less than perfect leave, to guarantee you make the shot. As you know, it's better to have another shot than it is to not get another shot, even if it's not an ideal leave. An uncountable number of easy shots are missed because the player is thinking about his leave instead of making the shot. Make your last thought, making the shot and your game will seriously improve by virtue of not missing easy shots. Good videos you are producing now. Keep up the good work.

      This past weekend in Vegas, I played the best pool of my life, and can’t wait to share it with you guys. What you are talking about is EXACTLY the biggest change!
      I tell my guys: “yes, sure, play X spin to get here, or make sure you bump X ball right….. BUT LAST THING YOU DO, IS MAKE SURE YOUR SHOT STILL GOES IN THE HOLE!!!”
      The biggest thing that changed for me was simply not missing. Ive gotten more comfortable with defense, which makes me feel OK about having shit leave, bc I can AT LEAST safe from there.

    Here is a tip on defence if you can't commit to running a table out. You need to look at on which shot you can you get a good safety.... waiting until you miss a leave then pray to play a good defence is just a mistake.

    25:55. No amount of elevation can make that become a legal hit when the cue ball and object ball are that close together. Watch Dr. Dave's videos on these double tap fouls.

    • @drewvonporte
      @drewvonporte 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wookie, so you know, I just went back and watched one of his on the subject: “10 useful ways to avoid a double hit foul”.
      @1:40 ish, he states you can avoid it by elevating the cue, albeit extremely. One way to tell if it is a double hit, is if it crosses the tangent line forward, before it backspinning (due to the elevation).
      My elevation was extreme, probably 80 degrees? And though we can’t see the cue ball from this angle, it backspin directly into the short rail and spun back up table. In case you thought it went directly forward.
      In summary, if it was a double hit, it likely would not have been able to be seen without slow-motion footage. No one watched, and naked eye would have probably not shown enough proof to overturn it as an illegal hit……
      …… and I got burnt anyway 😢 haha. I really think it was good though! Tell me what you think! Thanks for the feedback man 👊🏼

    if you wanted to you could have done a slight draw with a touch of left spin to spin it towards the 1 ball into the top right pocket and would just be a stun shot for the black.. but oh well i have done the same thing where i finish the game and think i should have done it this way instead but dont think about it at the time

    Hey Drew this is the first time I watched you play so I'm sure you probably play better than this.
    I noticed that it looked like you fell into the table vision trap.
    That is when your focus was only one or two ways to play the shot and so your position got out of whack.
    Which in turn it snowballed into making you make the wrong decisions about what ball to play first being if that was the solids or stripes.
    I'm pretty sure this mentally got to you.
    When I was playing in Pro/Am tournaments and this would happen to me.
    I would go to the bathroom was my face with cold water this would reset my brain.
