I think Buu often gets a bad rap for not being as serious as monkey warriors from outer space, a flamboyant dancing death squad, an Alien ripoff turned femboy space hitl3r, Terminator teenagers, and a bug man who drinks people and androids. With Buu I think Toriyama just decided he needed to be less subtle about it in order for us to get the joke.
