You know what i so much cherish about the video? The uncemented floor maintained by dried grass. I learnt something here. I don't need to waste money now on cemented floor, in my own farm room, all i just need is to be lacing the dusty ground with saw dust or wood shavings. Thanks for sharing.

What's up with the whiners? I have a pet rabbit but don't see any issue with this. This man has developed a great system to live off the land and raise animals for various uses including as meat. And from what I have seen he isn't cruel to any of the animals. Respect the land, the animals, eat well and enjoy the days you've got. The rabbits are treated to a healthy and clean life, and in turn the rabbits reward him with their tender meat.

IF you feel that way, go live in China! and while your at it ask for the dog and cat menu special! Not a hater, it's just not necessary in the 21st century. News flash, eating rabbits by itself will kill you..If you are capable of reading, Check out the AMA journals on proteins.

You're right that eating rabbit by itself will kill you (rabbit starvation) but that only occurs if you only eat rabbit and nothing else, and that's simply due to how lean rabbit meat is (practically zero fat).

    • @killersalmon4359
      @killersalmon4359 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Look, if you're a vegan, or a vegetarian, then more power to you, but if you eat meat, you're basically raising, and butchering animals by proxy. Just because someone else does it, doesn't absolve you of any "guilt". If someone has the property, etc. to do it ethically, why accuse them of barbarism, or lacking an education?

If you do your homework, you'll find that rabbit meat is lower in fat and calories than chicken and turkey. If you have heart issues, it's a good meat for you. As for rabbit manure, it's one of the few animal wastes that can be used without having to compost it. Again, do your homework and if you can find it, add it to your garden plot. You'll be amazed at the difference it will make in your soil condition. I used to clean out my rabbit pens (I raised show rabbits), dump it on the garden spot in the fall and let it sit on top until I tilled it in the spring.

Your video inadvertently answered a question I have been pondering. Should I cage my meat rabbits or let them free range. I didn't realise letting them free range would lead to tougher meat. That explains why I don't like wild rabbit as much as farmed. Thant you for your video. Don't let the fluffy bunny brigade get you down. Keep up the good work

We have five does that run free on a fenced in quarter acre. They have their 35 (5 litters of 7) babies all at once. Scoop up the running babies and put them in a rabbit tractor. You can be overwhelmed with rabbits easily.

Joe & Zack - thanks for sharing what you are doing. Gotta say I was startled to hear your concern about the rabbits hopping around a little in the tiny pen as potentially making them tough, if they 'were out there too long'. Have you ever tried it, raising rabbits in a ground/drag pen? The time and effort - and money - saved by raising rabbits in ground pens, letting them harvest their own food by eating what they were designed to eat, and simply moving them to a new spot each day, instead of having to clean cages... doesn't that sound worth giving it a try? (Of course it takes awhile for rabbits to adjust to a new diet. Depending on the forage available, some hay may still be needed.) Look forward to seeing if you guys decide to give it a go.
Thanks again for all the interesting videos!

..... Good luck on finding a place.. If you can afford it five acres is just about ideal.. That would allow for a good sized pond or small lake and orchard..

The rewards you get will be worth it in the end. Someone asked a question on this rabbit forum I'm subscribed to about if you're making a profit off raising the rabbits. Quite a few people including myself said that we are in the red, but, still LOVE having the option of raising our own meat. Its worth it

if you put a piece of metal roofing under your hutches (mine ended up in a U shape with one end up and the other as low as you can) the idea is to funnel all the droppings to one area. if you put a bucket or wheelbarrow to catch them. bonus is little shoveling needed doing it this way.

I have pet rabbits, yet still respect people who raise their own food. Plant or otherwise. I mean - I love animals!!! But they sure are tasty off the grill or from a crock pot. When I was a little girl my dad would occasionally have me pick out a chicken, whichever was the cutest is what was for dinner that night. I appreciate and honor animals they help sustain our lives and enrich them with their beauty. Good job sir!

Thank you for the nice comment. Some people get so worked up when someone is raising there own food yet they do not think twice about buying the same product in the store nor do they realise (or they choose not to think about) the fact that to sustain as many people as we have on this planet with the meat they eat that the growing and butchering conditions are like an assembly line. The one thats #10 in line watches the other 9 in front of it die before its his or her turn. This video gets so many comments on both ends of the spectrum, good and bad and it really suprises me that it does. This video shows happy rabbits jumping around yet I have another video where we actually kill and butcher the rabbits and yes that one has haters but this video stays higher in the "watch" catagory and gets many more comments. Thank you again for your nice input. Joe

So hold your breath and your hippocratic opinions for someone whom might actually be interested in them. Hey guys we have aspirations of farming rabbits too but we have a different direction in which we will be farming them.
As you may well know rabbit manure is an extremely good fertilizer so we aim to market it along with selling live rabbits for people to do what they will, providing it's humane.
We have designed our rabbit pasture enclosures to enable the rabbits to get a fresh green pick every couple of days and although these enclosures may be small they will still have ample room to stretch their legs without overdoing it.
Looking forward to sharing our exodus from the city with everyone real soon.

rabbits over chickens anytime. Meat gain to feed ratio MUCH higher with rabbits, means cheaper to raise for meat. The hides can be used also. Cleaner to raise, less smell, etc. Wish I could buy them in the stores, or meat mkt. No one wants to raise them anymore, it seems.

Living more natural you may actually get to know who you are, you get to become a person who is self made and inspired. The silence, the effort- It carves you - as does the loud city and its superficial race.

These guys are raised for meat, and he's still doing a fine job with them. It would be awesome if they could graze outside more often, but I get their purpose.

hi guys :) nice garden! wish I had a barn :) listen...the reason why all the folks comment on the bunnies is it isn't a very good life for them in the cages. Ever consider making them a long but narrow free range run outside in shaded areas around the garden? It can be a barrier on perimeter & still give the bunnies a good life of free ranging. I understand you don't want them to get too much muscle but honestly wouldn't you feel better about giving the animals you consume a happier life? They did absolutely love the pen time you gave them but I know you don't do that every day do you? That would be too much work. I'd create a door for them just like chickens get or at the least a tractor. :) just a thought. Thanks for sharing the video.

After seeing your video, with the cages INSIDE, I was wondering which is better? Don't the rabbits need sunshine? My huge shed has a dirt floor, like yours in your video. It does not have any windows, but it would be easy enough to put some in. I live in Colorado and it get gets pretty cold here in the winter. This winter it went down to 15 below zero for a few nights. I would love to hear your opinion on inside verses outside hutches.

ever think to try some worm beds under your rabbit cages they work pretty good I used to do that for awhile sold 90% of the beds 2x time and made about 300$ + a welder from it.
the only Issue I ran into was I couldn't separate the worms from the castings

any trouble with them digging out? I'm getting back into meat rabbits. I have tons of hutches but I like the idea of the outdoor pen. Do you think they could be grown out in a chicken tractor style thing?

    • @JoeandZachSurvival
      @JoeandZachSurvival  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

+Garrat Carson As long as you move it every couple days it would work. When I was a kid we had rabbits in a real big pen, at least 30 by 30 and it was just a pen, no bottom cage wire. They dug holes and had little ones underground and they could dig out of they wanted. having a movable pen would eliminate that possibility. Thank you. Joe

Check out Peeble's rabbit colony, he keeps rabbits on the ground. He does also, in fact, grow out his rabbits in a 'rabbit tractor'.

Hi Don't mean to be a know it all, but if you spray LAB & IMO (Korean Nat farming) on the straw, litter. under neath the pens, the droppings won't raise a stink and you don't have to clean it out as often.

    Good job
Can you explain more about this project?
i mean about: eat, clean (daily or monthly or in hours), water, to put the cage in the land is more better or do like you did, health, weather...
    And sorry about my language

laying a tarp under the rabbits and then spreading the straw makes it easy to change the bedding. just pull the tarp and it all comes out without having to bend down and pull out the soiled straw. I hang my cages so no legs to get in the way.

You should try having one live in your house with you as a companion animal. They get along fine with most dogs & cats, but are much cheaper & easier to care for than dogs or cats are & just as affectionate & smart

They HATE it! love the cold, but heat really effects them. One of my little ratbags even taught himself to turn the air con on & would do it evertime I wasn't watching or went out! I'd punish him by shaving him (he was angora) but he still did it, even with no fur!

I got smart when I was raising rabbits for food, I built a tilted board under the cages which allowed the waste to fall to the front, Given what I've learned since then, I'd have it fall into a gutter system and then wash it off into a big tub and take it to the garden area. Oh, by the way, killing animals for food is what they are on this earth for. :) (Edited in) I use to raise California breed. Found they would give me the most meat for the feed.

Richard Britt true but not ALL animals. Plus not necessarily raising them in small cages ither. Im not judging tho... Il take a plate if ya got extra... :) Just saying... I dont claim to know all the answers when it comes to life and right and wrong. So i dont make statements concerning things im not certain of and speak as tho i am.
