  • The rabbits never do anything but sit in a cage. I wanted to clean the actual cages out on the two cages that have many rabbits. I took the rabbits out and put them in the goat cage we use to move the goats around and it was fun to watch them do there acrobatics and running around. While that was going on I had to clean the barn and get them all some garden greens. Its all in this video. Thank You.

    What's up with the whiners? I have a pet rabbit but don't see any issue with this. This man has developed a great system to live off the land and raise animals for various uses including as meat. And from what I have seen he isn't cruel to any of the animals. Respect the land, the animals, eat well and enjoy the days you've got. The rabbits are treated to a healthy and clean life, and in turn the rabbits reward him with their tender meat.

      IF you feel that way, go live in China! and while your at it ask for the dog and cat menu special! Not a hater, it's just not necessary in the 21st century. News flash, eating rabbits by itself will kill you..If you are capable of reading, Check out the AMA journals on proteins.

      You're right that eating rabbit by itself will kill you (rabbit starvation) but that only occurs if you only eat rabbit and nothing else, and that's simply due to how lean rabbit meat is (practically zero fat).

      Look, if you're a vegan, or a vegetarian, then more power to you, but if you eat meat, you're basically raising, and butchering animals by proxy. Just because someone else does it, doesn't absolve you of any "guilt". If someone has the property, etc. to do it ethically, why accuse them of barbarism, or lacking an education?

    To Candice Kimmel who posted this comment but was then to much of a coward to do it where I can reply to her. She posted this:
    What I do to anything on this earth will be done to me. Think about it long and hard. See you on the other side.
    You should watch the butchering video you dumb ass. So when you eat that hamburger or maybe that steak or as far as what you writing maybe a carrot...... Will they grind you and then pat you into a patty and then fry you??? Will you as a carrot be like a live leg and then someone chews you??? Do you like chicken wings? will they just cut off you "arms" and then do them in spices? or will they shoot you first after you have been in line for hours watching all your "friends" get killed first. You are a stupid ass. At least these animals were killed humanely.
    Some people are so fucking stupid I wish that the movie "Solyent Green" was true and I could watch her walk the plank and get ground. Yes Candice, I will see you on the other side...... Who is doing the cooking, Me or You? and what are we having? fucking water? Oh wait. do you look down when you walk a sidewalk because its sure going to suck when all them ants you have accidently stepped on throughout your life become you and you have to live there agonising death and then since your just wounded (something my rabbits never experienced) you will then die a slow death being baked by the sun. Why not keep them outside (with a shelter obviously) in a run for their whole lives except when breeding? Their quality of life would be much better.

    • @gainerspot

      Robert Louque No they would not, I have been raising my rabbits outstide in rational pens for 3 years now and no preditor has ever got one. I provided a shelter for them and some other shade spots. I have build some rabbit tracors that I use them to eat the grass for me between my black berry runs, it works great and taste so much better. The rabbits also have a happy life.

    • @privatecocky8971
      @privatecocky8971 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see your reasoning here, though I would provide hutches for them at night and have them in the run in the day, or for part of the day.

    • @lilaclizard4504
      @lilaclizard4504 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Didn't you hear his reason in the video? If you let the rabbits have space to move around, they'll run around & that will cause them to develop muscles & so they won't taste as tender, so they need to be confined in tiny cages so they can't move hehe (the hehe is from the video not mine!) Very sad! Obviously an outdoor run, or at least natural ground under them & the ability to dig would give them a much better quality of life!

    • @heatherwolmarans8287
      @heatherwolmarans8287 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      We also have predator problems, rats and snakes, especially when there are small babies, and the rabbits dig their way out! We don't keep ours indoors, in cages raised off the ground, they're outdoors, in enclosures, with hutches, are fed greens from the garden as part of their diet, and eat all the grass and herbs which which poke through, planted (outside) along the fence, but are on concrete or stone bases.

    If you do your homework, you'll find that rabbit meat is lower in fat and calories than chicken and turkey. If you have heart issues, it's a good meat for you. As for rabbit manure, it's one of the few animal wastes that can be used without having to compost it. Again, do your homework and if you can find it, add it to your garden plot. You'll be amazed at the difference it will make in your soil condition. I used to clean out my rabbit pens (I raised show rabbits), dump it on the garden spot in the fall and let it sit on top until I tilled it in the spring.

    Joe & Zack - thanks for sharing what you are doing. Gotta say I was startled to hear your concern about the rabbits hopping around a little in the tiny pen as potentially making them tough, if they 'were out there too long'. Have you ever tried it, raising rabbits in a ground/drag pen? The time and effort - and money - saved by raising rabbits in ground pens, letting them harvest their own food by eating what they were designed to eat, and simply moving them to a new spot each day, instead of having to clean cages... doesn't that sound worth giving it a try? (Of course it takes awhile for rabbits to adjust to a new diet. Depending on the forage available, some hay may still be needed.) Look forward to seeing if you guys decide to give it a go.
    Thanks again for all the interesting videos!

      animallverrrr But these rabbits could easily be pets, I think that is what they are trying to say.
      I understand where jon is coming from and it is in fact hard to see why people raise animals to kill them for meat especially if you own them as pets. Which is why you shouldn't look up videos of rabbits, pigs, cows etc. getting killed or being raised to be kill because you will have a biased opinion.
      I personally would never eat a rabbit and I could never kill rabbits because I have two pet rabbits of my own, but I don't hate anyone for doing so either.

    • @FeelingShred
      @FeelingShred 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cindy Perkins I'm researching this subject but I don't think I would have the guts to kill the lovely rabbit, do you have a specific method? Do you know if they feel pain? I would guess one should cut the spine nerve (don't know the proper english word, the nerves on the back which spreads to the whole body)

    • @cindyperkins2148
      @cindyperkins2148 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      FeelingShred I hear ya! I had the same doubts. Luckily for me, one of the first rabbits I got became really mean. A large determined rabbit can bite through a welding glove! So I was not sorry to kill her, even though she was a beautiful animal. (I haven't had another one be mean, by the way, and it's been 3 years now.

    • @cindyperkins2148
      @cindyperkins2148 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      FeelingShred The way I kill them is with a Rabbit Wringer. rabbitwringer.com/html/online_store.php It kills them incredibly quickly
      They barely have time to get upset that I'm manipulating their heads
      when I yank their feet and their head separates from their spine.
      As far as I can tell, they feel no pain at all. They twitch, of course,
      Just like a chicken, their reflexes keep making muscles jump.
      But if pain is registered by the brain, it's been disconnected from the rest of the body

    • @ArnoldsDesign
      @ArnoldsDesign 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Cindy Perkins I've seen rabbits killed in this way. It doesn't look like they experience pain, but I always have to wonder, if their spine is separated at the neck, they're paralyzed so they really can't scream or thrash around. The pain registered at the base of the skull might actually be excruciating, though, even though they have no way of expressing it. I don't know this for sure, but are just my thoughts.

    • @cindyperkins2148
      @cindyperkins2148 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Arnold's Design I wondered about that myself. It's possible. However, the other thing I've seen is that their eyes go blank almost immediately. That's no guarantee, either, but it is reassuring.
      I tried clubbing them. Like shooting, it's most certain if the brain's destroyed before the pain message can even get there. Unfortunately, I've screwed that up both times; the poor rabbit screamed, and I had to do it a couple more times. I don't want them to suffer!

    I couldn't see the floors of their cages very well In the video but the most important reason to raise rabbits in mesh bottomed cages as opposed to on the ground or a solid floored cage is cleanliness, a solid floor or dirt pen is just going to have them covered In smashed feces and sitting in a puddle of urine 24/7 if it sounds gross it's because it is, I raised meat rabbits exclusively in raised all wire construction cages for this reason, if you don't believe me try keeping a rabbit in a large cardboard box with newspaper or any type of absorbent bedding and watch how wet, smelly and disgusting they get, even if you change the bedding 2 or 3 times a day they simply isn't anywhere for the poo and per to go and in a few days times the poor critter is so dirty they're at risk of urine burn or sore hock infections that can be life threatening, being in contact with the dirt will just encourage digging, escape, predator attacks but worst of all muddyness, anyone familiar with rabbit care, pet or otherwiseshould also know the risk of shock from attempting to bath them

    if you put a piece of metal roofing under your hutches (mine ended up in a U shape with one end up and the other as low as you can) the idea is to funnel all the droppings to one area. if you put a bucket or wheelbarrow to catch them. bonus is little shoveling needed doing it this way.

    hi guys :) nice garden! wish I had a barn :) listen...the reason why all the folks comment on the bunnies is it isn't a very good life for them in the cages. Ever consider making them a long but narrow free range run outside in shaded areas around the garden? It can be a barrier on perimeter & still give the bunnies a good life of free ranging. I understand you don't want them to get too much muscle but honestly wouldn't you feel better about giving the animals you consume a happier life? They did absolutely love the pen time you gave them but I know you don't do that every day do you? That would be too much work. I'd create a door for them just like chickens get or at the least a tractor. :) just a thought. Thanks for sharing the video.

      Oneda Zinn It's true that the pasture gets filthy fast. They eat it down fast, too. And I find it really hard to keep a digging animal in pasture! Still, I put them out in a pasture for a while whenever I can. They seem happy both in large cages and on grass, but I do like to see them run.

    I have pet rabbits, yet still respect people who raise their own food. Plant or otherwise. I mean - I love animals!!! But they sure are tasty off the grill or from a crock pot. When I was a little girl my dad would occasionally have me pick out a chicken, whichever was the cutest is what was for dinner that night. I appreciate and honor animals they help sustain our lives and enrich them with their beauty. Good job sir!

      Thank you for the nice comment. Some people get so worked up when someone is raising there own food yet they do not think twice about buying the same product in the store nor do they realise (or they choose not to think about) the fact that to sustain as many people as we have on this planet with the meat they eat that the growing and butchering conditions are like an assembly line. The one thats #10 in line watches the other 9 in front of it die before its his or her turn. This video gets so many comments on both ends of the spectrum, good and bad and it really suprises me that it does. This video shows happy rabbits jumping around yet I have another video where we actually kill and butcher the rabbits and yes that one has haters but this video stays higher in the "watch" catagory and gets many more comments. Thank you again for your nice input. Joe

      You love animals? Especially on your dinner plate? You 'honour and respect them'? Enough to kill them? Your post is full of contradictions. You don't kill what you love, honour and respect.

      Ann...please don't assume you know anything about anyone whom does not have an active role in your daily life... that is just the epitome of ignorance. I choose to eat meat, yep love veggies too...they are living things that provide you with the air you breathe. So hold your breath and your hippocratic opinions for someone whom might actually be interested in them. Much blessings to you on your lifes journey, Ann...I hope you find whatever it is you are seeking from this experience on your journey through life. I'm at total peace with who I am... and live my life for no one but myself and those I love.

    rabbits over chickens anytime. Meat gain to feed ratio MUCH higher with rabbits, means cheaper to raise for meat. The hides can be used also. Cleaner to raise, less smell, etc. Wish I could buy them in the stores, or meat mkt. No one wants to raise them anymore, it seems.

    • @RndomFX

      it because no one hardly eats them anymore that people are not selling them in stores, but ya rabbit is great...people need to be educated on how to properly prepare it and how good it is though again.

    Everything that lives is born.....lives a life then dies someway or another.I believe all living things have souls and are just reincarnated over and over again.As long as the animal is not miss treated or cruelly tortured.I cant find what Canice said on here.....but some people just look at life like.....how can you kill them white little bunnies.....while they are feeding their face with a hamburger.....made from the flesh of a barn yard animal that was raised for that specific purpose.THUMBS UP Joe

    I'm getting ready to start a rabbitry. I was planning on setting the cages up outside, along the side of a huge shed. After seeing your video, with the cages INSIDE, I was wondering which is better? Don't the rabbits need sunshine? My huge shed has a dirt floor, like yours in your video. It does not have any windows, but it would be easy enough to put some in. I live in Colorado and it get gets pretty cold here in the winter. This winter it went down to 15 below zero for a few nights. I would love to hear your opinion on inside verses outside hutches.

    Hey guys we have aspirations of farming rabbits too but we have a different direction in which we will be farming them.
    As you may well know rabbit manure is an extremely good fertilizer so we aim to market it along with selling live rabbits for people to do what they will, providing it's humane.
    We have designed our rabbit pasture enclosures to enable the rabbits to get a fresh green pick every couple of days and although these enclosures may be small they will still have ample room to stretch their legs without overdoing it.
    Looking forward to sharing our exodus from the city with everyone real soon.

    Great info Joe and Zach. Thanks! Growing up I ate rabbit plenty of times but since I moved to this country, its hard to find them. I am in the process of getting settled here and develop my own little system for a fruit trees, garden, chicken, rabbits, pigs, goats or sheep and ducks. Great set up; keep up teaching the skills that these trolls will wish they had one of these days. Have you seen videos by Scott Rea? He's a great butcher and has great ideas for cooking/carving rabbits and other animals.
