While selkies aren't all well popularized, I do believe in the show Sirens the whole skin-shedding to human form in based off of them, and Naiads in Grimm since they have webbed hands and feet and produced children with humans. Most selkies r women but very few r men. Male selkies are described as being very handsome in their human form, and having great seductive powers over human women. They typically seek those who are dissatisfied with their life, such as married women waiting for their fishermen husbands. If she wishes to make contact with a selkie male, she must shed seven tears into the sea. The popular tattletale version about a certain "Ursilla" of Orkney (a pseudonym) tells it.

OK, I understand that the fisherman genuiely loved her. But still, hiding her skin from her to make sure she would stay with him... That's kinda weird. And cruel.

In the original legend he was not in "love" with her, he was infatuated. And selkies have a limited amount of time they can be on land before they die so she had to go back to sea if she wanted to live.

The sea is always been very mysterious, and in the Celtic myths many Shapeshifting creatures live there either benign or evil. Selkies are often some of the most mysterious and intriguing creatures. Mind you down here in Cornwall we mostly have legends of mermaids rather than Selkies, despite having alarge seal population LOL.

quick question, what exactly would happen if the human husband died on her, even before having his children(or basically, they never had kids)? Would the selkie automatically return to her former life? Or because he was the only one who hid the animal skin, wouldn't she basically be trapped as a human for a lifetime? &a related question what would happen if the selkie destroyed her own animal skin? Would that destroy her as well? Or would the deed turn her into a complete human?

I just woke up from a dream. In this dream were Irish mermaids. They each glowed in separate vibrant colors. I was being told to come outside in the middle of the night. I was pacing inside a lake house. Quickly cracking the window open I’d peak and see. A voice and a wave crashed equally as fierce. Calling my name and beckoning me. I begin to believe. The cool polished panel boards under my feet transform into sand. The waves are higher this time but the shore lines are tame. A few left my presence and a some are still here observing the tumbling surf. A mermaid with incomprehensible florescence shine as she reaches out her hand. I’m terrified of what power may pull me in. I commit. Stepping to the edge of land our hands meet with a spark. Immediately the waves dye down. As if someone turned off a hot tub. Like a rocket through the coastal line. The water equally as dark as the night. Me being creeped out of any sea creatures I resorted to clinging to this mermaid. Then suddenly I looked up out of the water and there were bars and casinos floating about along a shore line I’d never seen. She spoke in a frightening tone but in my head I knew it was kind words.
    That’s when I woke up-

@@-RONNIE if you were forced to live away from your home, you miss it more than anything in the world and you get the chance to return, would you risk being separated from it again? These women are being held against their will, like the story said, they love their husbands and children... but they're basically slaves, unable to leave.

@@barbielawrie75 But in the video she said she loved her husband and her kids. I get that she wants to go back in the ocean. That's why I said once she got her skin back she can always come to visit even if it's just to the shoreline to see her kids.

When I was 7 I lived right off the coast, And every week I'd go to the harbor with my family, I'd run to this lookout point/tower thing and try to sport seals in the water. They'd come into on the misty days and I used to think they were selkies. I'd try to sing to them lol

Do you know the German TH-cam channel "Geschichte und Mythologie Illustriert"? I don't know if you allow it, but they use your complete videos.

Father: Hey, where is your mother?
Youngest son: Oh, she went for a swim.
Father: Did she found the Selkie skin that I hid from her?
    Young son: Oh course not.
    Father: Oh good (relieved) 😊.
Young son: I gave it to her.
    Father: YOU WWWHHAAAAAAT! 😮😮😮

    How interesting, there's a song I love, Selkie, by Blackbriar, I didn't know it was a folk-tale

This is different from the one I heard about on youtube. Where the women got the pelt herself, she joined her seal husband and the human killed the husband or his kids or something?

That was a far darker version, ending with the selkie overturning his boat and dragging him to his watery grave.
