I’ve never made a hoof knife from a rasp but I have made a couple loops out of some old US made Nicholson mill bastards that I had quite the hoard of for using at the lathe,sadly those are all gone and all of the newer bastards that I’ve tried just haven’t been as good of steel as the old ones. I suppose I’ll peruse the flea markets this comming spring/summer and the flea market at our clubs steam show next year because sadly we didn’t haven’t our show this year due to this COVID bollocks. I like the idea of making the handle out of the rasp too,sorta like a little nod to the old heller knives of the last century that had a cast iron handles on them.
I thought that was a hip bone on the bench when you were wire brushing the handle, lol. Nice j job. I think I saw a guy making an American Indian draw knife like it, but with a wood handle.
Nice job on the knife! Folks should be aware that a lot of rasps, at least in the USA, are increasingly becoming the case-hardened variety. Those might not give the desired result when hardening and tempering. Best to do a grind test for higher carbon so you can heat treat properly. The old rasps are usually all the higher carbon variety.
A lot of cheaper rasps are; but case hardened materials are objectively less reliable and so most better brands are still alright; and all tools eventually get tossed by someone; so keep an eye out anywho. You should test material you're unsure about anyway, and if you're running into metal files, though many cheap metal files are made assuming you'll only be working copper, aluminum, or stainless/coated steels; those are usually case harded. Most metal files, especially bastard files, that have been thrown away are more than likely usable material; though 4 in 1s are not necessarily reliable since they are more often case hardened materials.
You’ll probably laugh your ass off, but I’d like to see you make a couple of more of these, and send them over to Dr Hook Gp. The one that makes all the videos trimming cow feet in Scotland.
@@garyhuston I meant just the this style knife. I know your not a blade smith, but you are a craftsman and I believe whatever you make could handle the amount of work he putting them through. In a recent video he said he trimming over 300 cows a week, and in another video he said was buying them like 10 at a time because they wear them out that quick.
Gary ime retiring soon and want to start smithing as a hobby, I have a forge swage anvil, but what hand tools would you say I should look out for? Apart from a hammer!
The most important tongs you'll have, you'll make. Usually the jaws of the tongs you will make will be flat partially, with a V shape in the center of them; like below. | ∧ | | V | You can buy "Bolt-Tongs" which are similar.
@@tjn2254 That's just how it works TJ. There's no other way to harden steel. If you don't reach that point, it just won't harden enough to matter if at all. Red and black? I'm not sure what you're describing there. The scale? This isn't meant to be a hard tool; farrier's knives are closer to a purple temper than a yellow temper. Blue is too much though, but a little softer is safer than a little harder in this case

It would be nice if you kept the end of the rasp as a hoof pic or maybe forge it for setting the shoes.

Yes, tried it the next day, it works well but is a bit heavy and cold on a frosty morning!
I also made one, but I found the handle to be too thin. I made a hoof-pick at the back end (like a Chris Gregory knife)
My handle was plenty thick enough but I didn’t thin it down at all and I used a wide rasp which made it quite thick.
Have you tried it out yet? Did it hold an edge? How well did it work for you?
Not yet I only made it a couple of hours ago!

That depends on what you want to do but tongs are a winner, you can never have enough tongs!
