Just purchased the M8. Love your channel. Purchased your zine a couple of years ago. I love it! It’s absolutely crazy that you don’t have more subscribers 🤦♂️
Managed to get a M8 a few days ago in amazing condition for £900 and I'm certainly not regretting it. Feels just like my M6 but digital, which means it's a pleasure to use. You wouldn't think it's 10MP either, especially if you use LR's enhance. While typing this, I can see to the right of my screen that you've done a video in NZ with both the M8 and M6; I'll be watching that next!
@billyray7743 less certainly is more. I don’t need all the settings, megapixels etc. I kinda wish it was better with the higher ISOs but it’s not important as I’m mostly a day time shooter anyway!
Wow @firtythive that for a fantastic price for Leica M8 man, Im looking for one right now myself, it's a risk of course for a camera this old! Thanks again mate!
These images are superb but I was thinking (in my opinion ONLY) a very elderly person steering into the shadows would be mind blowing. Again, just one man's meager point of view. Thanks for your great content sir.
Man alive Paul, you are making me even more excited to hit NZ at Christmas time. I only ever shoot people/events/portraits/street, but seeing these lovely still-life photos, is really getting me thinking about giving it a crack.
Great stuff Paul....I like your color correction technique. Subtle...oh yeah, way to go....I like the colors you corrected to....Looks almost like Kodak Portra film.
Hey there, Paul. Very cool to be able to pay attention to your focus(es) and decision making in image capture and in making edits with this image. Some of this is about how you see in seeing the image and its edit. Good. I am now curious about trialing tripod use and timer in low-light with the M8. Again, ‘treasure is treasure.’ Big gratitude coming your way for all this. Ross
Great Video, Paul the mill was. is a wonderful subject, your settings are standard, except shooting Raw and from the tripod! those are majors! I loved your last video! I love your editing logic fantastic mate!
"It's all very straightforward and simple because at the end of the day it really is all about lighting, subject and composition " ... when will some people ever understand what EVERY TH-camr, teacher and master preaches time and time again?? There ain't no magic pill people.
Paul, I love watching your stuff man, particularly because you have the Leica M8, and I love your monochrome images! man, so I have deicded I want to get an M8 also! they have M8's on MPB, for £1200ish, and I was about to jump on one, then the risk factor of such an old camera has made me nervous! Paul, I know it would be a bit more expensive? but do you think it would be a better option to get an M8 reconditioned from the Leica online store?!?! what do you think? Thank you for your advice, I really would apreciate it, Paul.
Hi mate I'm not sure what the price difference is, £1200 is a lot for a second hand camera. Mine cost half that in NZ. Really tough call you could buy the Leica recon and still have problems, would they warrantee it? If you can check the shutter count on the other one, either way I would say the M8 is one of those cameras you enjoy while it lives. Personally I would opt for the second hand one and take the risk, but it's a 50/50 call. Good luck!
@@PaulCSmithPhotographer Thanks Paul, yeah, if you get a reconditioned one from Leica you get a 24 month warranty apparently, but what the cost is I don’t know? Hey thanks for your reply mate 🤘
Awesome Paul, lovely shots. Would love to shoot a leica, one day I will, for now I'll make do with the fujis, canons, nikons, olympus, Ikontas, bessa, pentax, rollei, etc etc....now if I just flog that lot, a leg, a kidney and my first born I could get a leica tee shirt. Love those prints mate serious quality, It's one thing I totally neglect, I see my day job stuff in newspaper print, and personal projects on the mac, I shoot so much so often I just don't get round to printing. I need to crack on.
Love it! M8 biggest secret magic camera!! Haha. Thanks for showing your process. Have u tried actual infrared with the m8? Slap a 720nm filter and it is an amazing IR camera too!!
Thanks for taking the time to do this. The camera is so straightforward (which is a joy!) that there isn’t much settings wise to ‘magic’ but the Lightroom work is fascinating. Again, great images. The camera punches so far beyond its paper spec and age it’s amazing.
It’s not a magic camera, but it’s one of the few camera I really regret selling. I’ll never rebuy it because the investment just doesn’t make sense, as you’ve pointed out in other videos. But that camera, with a Jupiter 8 35mm lens and the Hexanon 28mm produced the highest percentage of keeper shots of any digital camera I’ve ever owned. I dislike digital post processing and while I no that one can individually tweak each photo in Lightroom or photoshop, standard presets didn’t work because the the camera and lens combo would behave so differently in different lighting and subject conditions! So, basically I uploaded the JPEGS and left it at that. The thing is? Those photos had something different. They weren’t perfect. Some had motion blur. Occasionally the colors would be insane (I had the original non IR-filtered version) and the higher iso was…. rudimentary? But man, I’ve got some photos from a jazz club that I shot black and white JPEG at those high ISO’s that to this day represent the best in (my) photography. I’ve got some long exposure landscapes I used a IR filter on that hang framed on my wall that people instantly walk up to and comment on. I got a candid picture of my daughter caught when she was enraptured by a musical piece in a place that I could only use a small quiet manual camera. Wait….. maybe it is magic.
i keep blowing out my daytime shots with my m8. i'm leaving it in A so camera deciding most stuff...but how do i check if my pics blown..since te screen sucks so bad....help ( i shoot raw...)
Paul is there any camera (non Leica)out there that comes remotely close to the files produced by the M8? I sold my M8 a while back and moved onto an M6. I love the M6 but boy do I miss my M8. It’s just not a smart move to purchase one now a days since some of the issues are non repairable
I know is an old post, but having both the M8 and 6D I would say the 5D Classic is worth considering, produces awesome files with a unique color palette. If you want the CCD magic, the old Olympus E-300 has a CCD also made by Kodak like the one on the M8. 👍
Here's my Lightroom tip. Leica had a contract with lightroom and lightroom had a contract with leica customers. Lightroom will not honor the contract in that it can be downloaded on 2 computers! There was no timeline in the contract for customers to download twice. They actually can be sued! A court case like that has already set a precedent.

@@palmhousebookrestoration3284 funnily enough, I’m actually selling mine now. It’s on eBay for a little more than I paid for it haha
Thanks for sharing, always a lot to learn and be inspired.
Excellent video and edit. The way I do it too with those highligths to emphasis focus points.
Thanks for sharing
Can’t wait to get my M8 back out , thank you for inspiring me , great video and can’t wait to watch the others 👍
been using the leica m8 since 2010, great camera
I love the chair in the corner. Gorgeous image
Thank you!

Look at greens in sunlight and you will see the the difference.
And black on clothes going purple
Can you recommend an IR cut filter ? Struggling to find one.

SC P600. Thanks & take care
