God what an amazingly unexpected performance. I remember being 12 and being like, holy shit that was amazing. I really hope he signed up to play Daughters and then showed up in his Velvet suit and blew them away with a Jimi hendrix classic like that. You know that room was silent for like 5 seconds afterword. "John you can't cuss on live TV like that." 🤣
The phrase he plays between 2:39-2:45 gives me goose bumps every time. I know it sounds technically simple but is just freaking awesome the way he plays it and the dynamics he uses between the notes. Pure fucking soul!!
I’m dying to know if John actually did something to the finish on his black one. I’m this vid, the finish right above the pickguard is all one shade of dark brown. And after this video, all other photos and video show the guitar with a different shade in the same spot.

Just play wear. Mayer got the black one just a few months before this. It was basically a brand new guitar at that point. So that explains
It's the wood being scratched and exposed from strumming.
Pretty sure it's a different guitar that has been relic'd perhaps by a professional.
