As I child of the 80s who ended up in engineering and computer science because of his C64, I would like to say this is COMPLETELY in keeping with the spirit of the C64. In the era of monochrome, CGA, and whatever the Apple II had, the Commodore was all about creativity, color, and music. It was just so much fun. I think this pays homage to the spirit of what it really was all about.
As a CPC owner back in the day, painting the C64 in Spectrum colours would've been hilarious. I salute your daughters wish to troll the (sometimes overly judgemental) retro community!
Retro Recipes But you know how there's inevitably always great controversy that springs up over the theatrical release vs the director's cut ... oh wait ... I get it - that's the whole idea! :-)
Back in the 1980s I used to go into shops selling home computers and type in a program on the Spectrums that made them simulate the Commodore 64 start screen, complete with flashing cursor. It was fun watching the confused looks on other customers' faces!
I was like "argh, a blue C64!" but after seeing how you revised this baby... you did well and if I could I would maybe do the same with a bin in this condition.
The Spectrum idea from your daughter would actually be amazing. I wouldnt care what the "haters" or the "snobs" say, it would have been a true homage to 2 of the greatest 80's influencers. Just noticed that @Catriona is going to do one, that would be cool. Hahaha really got for a moment with retrobrighting paper !!!!!
That glob of solder on the RF shield is important. It lets the lid make good electrical contact with the base. I would definitely go back in and solder that.
Wow, that looks amazing. Blue is my favorite color. What you did what was great because it saved a machine from the landfill. Hopefully I find a reasonably priced machine soon, so I can try my own custom paint job.

Looks Amazing! cool hehe I remember having an MSX and by that time my friend had a C64 and I was always impressed by the music and graphics of it, later on I had an Amiga because my father had a Video Producing company, gosh Commodore, what times...
Electric Blue what a juicy color! Solid work without any runs and came out so nice. Now I let the rotted manual be the final proof that this poor computer was stored next to a leaking car battery or some other source of acid. Great job!
My happiest day would when opening a 80's computer and finding little marker pen ticks on the chips, knowing that Noel or Adrian had been in there first !!!!!
I absolutely love it! I'm all for getting it clean and modern, just because that's how I actually remember these machines, not like they are now usually.
Wow! Loved how the system turned out! The blue was a perfect choice, considering the default BASIC colours, and also Commodore's use of a lot of blue in their branding and design (manuals, packaging, etc) Saw the first part in my YT feed, decided to watch on a whim, and ended up watching all three parts back-to-back, and was entertained and informed all the way through. You've just gained another subscriber from this, well done!
I agree, it's really looking great! The blue colour was a good choice! And I understand that you wanna keep it. Just like the TI 99/4A I got for cheap and had to paint. A successful paint job adds some value to the machine.
I have to say, I was a teensy bit skeptical about the color, but given the condition of the case - of course a paint job had to be done. Seeing the result completely changed my mind, it looks great! It turned out amazing. What a transformation. Thanks for sharing this journey with us!
I'm amazed more people don't paint them. I mean if you do it right, and you did - who cares. I'd say you just did one of the best restorations I've seen.
I would only do that for cases where there's nothing to lose anymore, so to speak. That way, preserved cases stay preserved and the ugly ones get a new lease of life such as this one.
Absolutely love how this turned out! What an amazing colour. If Commodore would have sold coloured cases back in the day this could very well be one of them if you ask me!
Looks great. Last year I bought a system in a terrible state so I spray painted my C64c orange, I like the vibrant colour to it. I actually tried spray painting the grill to match the various colours on the C64 logo, but it didn't come out well and I went over it all in the one colour. It was my first spray job though.
Wow! 😮 I absolutely love that color Noel! And that's one of the best C64 spray paint jobs I've seen on TH-cam. I would definitely keep that C64 for myself to enjoy. I kind of wanted to see the worn badges against the new spray paint, but the new ones look amazing too. Well done! 👏 (I'm off to spray paint my C64 now... (jk))
Thanks so much! To be totally honest, I had some doubts after I picked the paint. I realized I hadn't taken the brownish color of the keys into account and that maybe I should have gone with an earth tone instead. But I'm really glad I picked that one. To me it all came together with as soon as I put the badges. Like magic! 😃
Looks great in "Smurf Blue" :) Would suggest that you embedd the old manual in acrylic resin to perserve it and have a great "conversation piece" in your shelf.
Great series!!. And the result is fantastic. Seeing the initial condition of this C64 I could not imagine it would end up looking as good as this!. Congrats.
What you are feeling is the top laquer especially when you choose matte. The fine mist, will always make it matte and more matte because the fine droplets, matte has more evaporative qualities so that it already partially dries in the air. You can always wet sand it with a 1000 to 3000 grit. But it will become a bit satin. If you want smooth finish than it’s a thick glossy coat. That’s also the reason why I painted mine with car paint and high gloss as well as the guitars I made and repainted. And with glossy you need to give it a wet coat to prevent the little droplets. And you definitely needs to wet sand that to get it smooth.
My god that blue is amazing. That was a cracking paint job even considering you'd not painted a case before. The finish is consistent with matt clearcoats I've used before. A quick wet sand with 2000 or so would get you want you want I think. Beautiful though. I think that's that most tasteful retro paint job I've ever seen.
Well I wasn’t originally convinced by the choice of electric blue but it turned out brilliant in the end. Fantastic restoration overall and one more piece of computer history gets to live on for a while longer.
To be totally honest, I wasn't convinced either. After I ordered it, I started second-guessing myself when I realized the keys are brownish and that maybe I should have gone for an earth tone instead. So the ending was a surprise for me as well. Really happy how it turned out! 😃
The effort you've put on this talks for itself. Awesome job and awesome looking machine! I can tell you, you'll keep it with you for ages. @14:24 guess the rust remover dissolved the zinc plating on the steel screws, thus uncovering their true and original dark colour of the steel. The zinc plating has dual purpose. On the first hand it is a mechanical protector of the steel, preventing oxygen and moisture to get into the steel itself. And when the galvanic corrosion kicks in, the zinc, being less noble and acting as an anode in the electrochemical pair, corrodes faster and prevents the corrosion of the more noble metal that acts as a cathode. In this case, the steel is not corroded. Great work on the C64, it looks absolutely stunning!
Impresionante el trabajo que has hecho Noel! Felicitaciones! El azul que elegiste quedo muy lindo y le dio un aire de modernidad a la vieja y querida C64!
Hi Noel. You do a great job with all your videos and the comments you make. I think that 8-bit guy just places anything rusty in vinegar and leave for a day or two. It just removes the rust and doesn't damage anything like what you experienced with the springs. I tried it myself with the vinegar but I tried it with white vinegar and it worked. Keep up the good work :-)
Thank you! I think vinegar would have done the same thing, just taking longer. The problem was that those springs were really, really rusted and far gone, so they were rusted all the way to the core.
I had one as bad as this, worked and was very cheap, so I sprayed it with proper plastic spray paint with 4 light even coats and a thick gloss coat and hardened it in UV light between coats and it stayed on there for years. I painted it "bubblegum pink" for a lass who liked retro gaming lol

I tried the same thing with my CPC back in the 80s. I went for a leopard pattern which totally did not work. So I spent the next years with a crap looking computer. Your C64 on the other hand turned out wonderfully!
That really blue my mind. Anyway...I do the same thing with my spray paints - put them in warm water, shake well, put them in warm water again, shake well and use.
