Hi, I'm not at the workshop these days, so I can't take a measure, as I remember it, it's just a little bigger than the wooden dowel, as long as you center it, it should not be an issue.
It's for holding the splitter in place, as you can see it can flip up. My springs are not quite strong enough, so I also use my hand, just in case... ;-)
That's a open question, but I will thing it's strong enough for any leather, but if it's hard an thick, you will take several passes. I use only rawhide and that works perfectly.
You guys are lazy, big laugh. The fun part is figuring it out and make your own version. But I have a drawing in this case as I made on in my sketchbook, you can find it in the blog, but also in the link under, in the description. Happy build.

Calculating, it seems to me that the diameter of the aluminum rod is 3/8 or 1/2 de an inch, you could get me out of doubt.?

The aluminium rod is 1,1mm the wood 0,9mm, but it's not so important. Sorry I forgot to answer when I were in the shop... hope you managed.

Yes, you can see the width in the drawing. It's a full Stanley knife blade width.
