✏️The ruby fields could be a metaphor for the afterlife. This person has possibly experienced their loved one die, and cannot get over their death. I imagine a poppy field when I imagine a ruby field, so you could associate death in this song as a kind of deep slumber(think of how media presents poppies - opium -> overdosing or even the poppy fields in Wizard of Oz where you fall asleep if you enter the poppy fields), rather than a violent death. “Wounded shield” - they are used to locking themselves in and not being vulnerable. The singer cuts off the word ‘amour’ to emphasises the closeness of the couple and dissolves the tension in the line prior, it’s used as a pet name and ends off the first stanza like an epistolary love letter. This makes it much more personal, however it also creates a kind binary tone where he uses the word “unaccounted” - like he is comparing god to controlling a system i.e being a small part of a bigger picture, he starts to feel insignificant because of this effect.

✏️We go back to this theme of regret/not being able to cope with their loved one’s death. They say they want to ‘weather a storm’ - it creates a dual meaning to this line: the person is angry and wants to destroy everything, but this person also wants to remember this person through a storm and we associate that with the word ‘we’, as this person doesn’t want to let go of his ex-loved one, there is still a sense of co dependency on the loved one and the person singing the song.

✏️their humanity is stripped and reduced to ‘peace’ in the first line, as this person is trying to come to terms with his anxieties about his loved one’s death. The other time their humanity is reduced is when it says ‘fear’ so while this person has maybe accepted their loved one’s death, he still experiences anxieties, but manages it with the memories they made together when the person’s loved one’s was alive. The first line also parallels with the Wizard of Oz with the path, the point of the whole movie being based on finding your own purpose/getting home. The word ‘release’ is basically used as a full stop, much like how ‘amour’ is used in the first stanza, like it’s a final jump off the proverbial diving board.

✏️the person is celebrating his life, his energy and reason to live in the first line. I hate doing this point, but the storm can also be related to the wizard of Oz, he doesn’t want the storm to form and harm his idea of his loved one.
