Why not 45 def for spirit shield and zerker helm? If you want to be technical on dps
With just 50 attack, melee is not going to be winning most wildy fights, so slayer helm (i) with extra magic bonuses is better (refreezes will win fights). Zerker helm would simply be a budget option (unless 60+ attack, or at Bounty Hunter). Similarly, spirit shield is barely better than rune kite when you have a mage's book switch (which is meta for refreezes), so it would be a budget option or learner option. His build is great for bullying pures, so having one extra combat level can make a difference. But 45 defence wouldn't ruin his account, it's still an opinion.

I have a heavy ballista 50 def pure and its actually pretty funny. Ill have swamp bark with chaps/granite body swap for ranging. could go for bally/axe spec or bring g maul for more risk. Knives are also funny with a g shield as 1 def pures still get out traded even if they camp range pray.

Defense does either nothing and you get hit like you have one defense OR you’re an absolute tank in snake skins and black hides that won’t take a single crit
