As a Texan, I wouldn’t do too well on the quiz perhaps except knowing the Normandy related date that is not 1066, June 6, 1944 Overlord d day

most excellent history lecture/explanation; if only school and college teachers could aspire to make history so interesting

Bayeux is a charming town with excellent restaurants. The Tapestry is a unique gem. Just a ferry ride away!

In 1966 Guinness did a poster ad campaign featuring the Bayeux tapestry showing Harold on horseback holding up a glass of Guinness instead of a sword. The strapline, Battle of Hastings 1066. Bottle of Guinness 1966. That made a change from everything being World Cup that year.

Excellent talk with so much detail! Thank you so much. I was born and brought up in Hastings so, of course, we all knew about 1066 and the town nearby called Battle is where the famous battle took place - or so they say! I moved to France to teach English in 1981 and never went back.

The bayeux tapestry’s length (70m) is longer than the height of the Titanic (53m).

Watched this after watching a partly animated, Monty Pythonesque summary of a tapestry reproduction on the TH-cam channel Lindybeige. The host of that channel, Lloyd, got me curious to know more. Your talk about it here was excellent.

@@BerwickCoatesHistorian Rewatching yet again, sir. Next, I am going to start a marathon of lectures, and films with all their foibles, about the English Civil War... Cromwell and the first 2 monarchs named Charles interest me now that a third Charles is on the throne recently.

I was amused by the attitude of "probably not much", though, I do know a little about some things. Admittedly, probably not as much as a good British student! I do know a lot about the 11th century, however--just not in that part of the world!! Thanks, now I know a bit more.

Hello, i am still at the beginning of this talk but i just want to say that as an Australian with British (English and Welsh) heritage, i love the gentle interrogation at the outset. And the reason is, I've recently realised how tremendously vague i am about this subject in comparison with the latent focus on Tudor rule in popular history. i am looking forward to the rest of this presentation. Thank you for your time and efforts! 🙏

Fascinating podcast, but something inside of me dies every time I hear "enormity" used for "bignes".
    It means "great evil".
