To believe that we are the cause of all of this is to buy into white supremacy which says that black people are struggling because we're black, not because of the generational abuse and disfunction that has been passed down our ancestry. The thing is, just because something is possible for a small percentage of a group, it does not mean it's possible for all or even the majority.
Take the "crabs in a barrel" scenario for example: One or two of those crabs may actually make it out. But if they did, that's not an example of the fact that all of the rest should be able to make it out too. It's just probability at play.
When you say something like "I see a problem from within" you're supporting the "bootstraps must be pulled up by themselves" doctrine.
There are reasons why people of color are struggling with the issues we're struggling with in this country and none of them are completely our "fault," whatever that means. To believe that we are the cause of all of this is to buy into white supremacy which says that black people are struggling because we're black, not because of the generational abuse and disfunction that has been passed down our ancestry.
But I think you and I agree on more than we disagree on. I get frustrated and angry all the time with my people. Please believe me. I was teased for being smart. I was ridiculed for following rules. I was jumped for not being "black enough" but I never fit in with white kids cause I was "too black" or too poor to understand their social norms.
And I see not only people of color but my own friends and family in the streets, jails and graves and I want to blame them for not just doing better too. But they never had a chance.
We need to fix the systemic problems. THAT will lead to possibilities for these young people. Blaming them for not being able to cope with their circumstances has and will continue to fix nothing.
