can you make duplicates instead of add the layer masks?

I'm not sure I fully understand your question. If you are referring to the layer mask applied to the flower then no, duplicates is not the ideal way to go about it. Applying layer mask simplifies the process and keeps your layer tab less busy. But I must admit, there are several ways of approaching a work. try hands on it in your own way and send it this email and we'll discuss it the next tutorial
