Act Three
Kurwenal has taken Tristan to his home, Kareol in Brittany. As Tristan's wound refuses to heal, Kurwenal has sent for Isolde to come and nurse his master back to health. A shepherd is keeping watch for her ship. He is to announce the arrival of the vessel by singing a merry song. Tristan's thoughts are dwelling on his origins and his childhood, spent without the love and support of his parents. His father died after he had been conceived, his mother died after he was born. When Isolde finally arrives, she is too late; Tristan has departed his earthly life at the moment of her arrival. Brangäne has also persuaded Marke to travel to Kareol so that he can offer the lovers his forgiveness. When the king and his retinue arrive, Kurwenal tries to stop them from seeing Tristan and Isolde. In the course of the ensuing struggle, Kurwenal and Melot kill each other. Isolde follows Tristan into another world.
WM was one of the VERY FEW that could sing "Liebestod" as it should be sung. SUBLIME!!!
Wenn ich nach so vielen Jahren das höre, wird mir bewusst, wie gut Jon Fredric West als Tristan war. Chapeau. Waltraud Meier war von Anfang an stimmlich - nicht darstellerisch - eine glatte Fehlbesetzung. Ich habe sie live gehört; jeder ihrer hohen Töne taten in den Ohren weh, ihr Tremolo war bedenklich. Das Dirigat fabelhaft.

Die Sänger/Innen sind auszeichnet! Opernseher sind ja mittlerweile Einiges gewohnt, die Sänger/Innen noch viel mehr. Bewundernswert!

Ich höre seit 50 Jahren Wagner, und habe sehr viele Aufführungen auf der ganzen Welt sehen dürfen.
Was Bayreuth uns allerdings in den letzten Jahren verkaufen möchte ist unterste Schublade.
Zum Tristan, gutes Orchester, guter Dirigent, aber die Sänger sind unterer Durchschnitt, und da kann man doch wohl in Bayreuth etwas besseres erwarten. Bestes Beispiel für dieses Jahr ist die absolute Fehlbesetzung des Tannhäuser, und des Siegfried, beide Rollen werden von Herrn Voigt gesungen, und der hat nun wahrlich keine Heldentenor Stimme. Er wäre ein guter Loge, oder ein David, ein naiver Parsifal, doch bestimmt kein Tannhäuser, Siegfried, Walther, oder ein Siegmund. Das ist natürlich nur meine bescheidene Meinung, andere scheinen das ja anders zu sehen.
Bayreuth 1966, Tristan und Isolde, Dirigent Karl Böhm, Isolde Birgit Nilsson, Tristan Wolfgang Windgassen, Kurwenal Eberhard Wächter, das ist für mich das Maß aller musikalischen Aufführungen.

Ich habe mich ja mittlerweile daran gewöhnt, dass man viele Opern nur noch mit geschlossenen Augen genießen kann, wenn dann aber die Sänger auch noch nur unter dem Durchschnitt Singen, dann ist nicht nur das Eintrittsgeld verschwendet, sondern der ganze Abend ist hinüber.
