Hi Dennis, Thanks to your great videos I tackled a Mitchell 308X and a Pflueger PSP 20F 5 bearing micro light. Had to chuckle when you mentioned not to mess with the bail spring assembly on this Penn reel ! Now I know why. When I opened up the Pflueger bail assembly, parts shot off in every direction. Spent the next 25 minutes trying to figure it out. Good news , Patience was triumphant !!! Oh and did I also mention the hidden screws to get to the internals ?!?! A fun puzzle indeed... Many Thanks and Best Wishes, Cons
Unfortunately I was in a "rush" to get these back to the customer as they were going fishing. I did not have the time to film this one. I will do the next one that comes into the shop. Thanks for watching - Dennis
Nice reel. I haven’t any experience with this reel. Speaking of using compressors, I use mine for two purposes: I like to blow off sand mainly under rotors and spools and I use the air to blow out old bearings that I have soaked to get out dried up grease and dirt. I use the compressor only in my garage and away from any chance of blowing something I don’t want to fly away. I am assuming this is a Chinese Penn and you know how I feel about those. Been at the beach this week and have had some great fishing with some of my vintage Mitchell reels. I have used so far these reels” 396 PUM, 496, 302N, 402 PUM, 306A, 401, and a 488. All performed very well in the surf and the canal. My old shoulders that have had 3 surgeries have not fared as well so I am taking a day off today. I’m switching over to Penn Z reels and greenies and some Dianas for tomorrow. Great vide Dennis. There is nothing to really dislike about the reel.
Great to hear you are out fishing again and giving the classic reels some surf time. I am going to try and get in the water this weekend. Yes the Sarges was a Chinese made reel. It is strong and dependable - best wishes - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle Thanks Dennis, if you are okay with it i may send you my Penn 706Z to see if you can figure out whar's going on with it. Just spinning it off the rod with no load on it you'd never think anything was wrong but when you put load on it like a drop rig with 4 oz. Wt. there is a load internal rubbing sound. I've replaced the bearings and tried to find out what was going on. Even with the noise the reel works fine. I've wondered if the AR dog and/or springs could be rubbing the main gear somehow. I'm going to try working on it again to see if i can find the problem. I have the schematic but if that doesn't work are you willing to give it a going over? I've had that reel since 1977 or so and it has a lot of sentimental value for me. My 704Z and 704 greenie and Penn 104 worked perfectly today. Let me know what you think. You have my e-mail address so you can contact me there. Thanks for helping me out with this great vintage reel!!! Of course i'll be happy to compensate you for your assistance! I'd love it if you can help me out.
2nd Chance Tackle Dennis - it will be early next week before I can send it. Will be returning home from the beach in the morning. I am having an oblation procedure on the nerves in my lower back on the next two Tuesdays. I have pretty severe spinal stenosis. This is a sort of last attempt to block the pain. I’ve had it done successfully on my neck twice. If it works on my lower back I can get off of some of the strong medicines I’ve been on for several years. I figure I need an expert opinion on this reel as I’ve tried all I can think of except replacing the main gear and pinion. That may be what it needs. By the way, my final day of fishing was fantastic. We caught a few monster Pompano, many Spot, and a few bluefish and whiting. My final catch was the largest whiting I have ever seen - over 20” long!
Hi Dennis. Always enjoy your vids. I have a problem. Can you direct me? I purchased a Garcia Mitchell saltwater reel and I have no idea about its model number. I thought it was all there, but I goofed. I am short one screw that goes thru the case to the foot on the gear side of the reel. The diameter of the reel is about the size of a baseball, maybe a bit larger, and it is yellow, of course. The only other identifying mark on the reel is a stamped number on the beauty ring on the spool-side of the reel. That number is 1022871. The badge is missing, but I think it would only say Garcia Mitchell if it were here. Made in France is embossed in the spool side of the reel case. My need... Where can I find this screw? Thanks in advance, for your vids and any guidance you might offer on this problem.
Can you send me a note to my email 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com along with a picture of your reel? It sounds like you are referring to the 600 series and you probably have a 624 model. I will try to help you with the screw. Thanks for asking - Dennis
