- In this video, I show you how to make deadheading a butterfly bush (Buddleia) easy - if you even need to deadhead at all. I share examples up close so you know what to look for and how to avoid snipping off future flowers. Plus I discuss two solutions for planting butterfly bushes in clay soil. Surrounded by their calming scent, deadheading butterfly bushes can be very relaxing!

Thank you for this video! Seeing examples of the way that multiple cones of flowers can grow off of a single stem, and how to deadhead them while saving the other growth really helped me. I'm a visual learner so reading about it isn't enough. I watched a couple of other butterfly bush deadheading videos before I got to yours but yours was the most helpful video! I’m in central NC and we have red clay soil. I just planted my first butterfly bushes. I have 2 that are in a raised bed and I have 2 that aren’t. I mixed up some of the clay soil with a soil amender and planted them mounded. They look very happy and the butterflies love it too!! ❤❤❤. I’m turning my yard into pollinator plants. ❤

Hummingbirds and butterflies love my BBs. Sometimes the scent is so strong it almost chokes me. Make me cough but I would not be without them. Excellent information.
Hi Carol, glad this video was helpful! I love how hummingbirds and butterflies (and bees too) are all over my butterfly bushes during the Summer. I just wish I had them planted closer to my windows so I could watch from inside! That's surprising that the scent is strong on yours, but perhaps different varieties have different scent strengths. I'm happy mine seem to have a soft scent. (For me, lilacs are very strong and make me cough.)
Oh how pretty! I killed 3 of them so far and almost gave up on them. I like how yours is have so much blooms.

@@GardenSanity PW Pugster Blue, FE Funky Fuchsia (so gorgeous and may get 6-8ft), and a Monrovia Royal Razz 5-6ft. I have a lot of space here. BTW my Little Limes are really taking off! I’m so grateful for those generously sharing their knowledge here giving me an abundance of confidence. Gardening has added so much joy to our lives. ❤️🦋🌼🌞

Sometimes it’s hard to decide which part of the video should go first: the background on the shrub and why it should be deadheaded (and if it needs to be) or the actual deadheading. My one butterfly bush I inherited with house ..it’s probably 10+ yrs old ..this year cut way back n looks fabulous 👍. I’m going to purchase these new ones ..Thanks 👌

They look great! I normally enjoy deadheading, but not this year. It’s been so hot and wet, the mosquitoes are insane. I’m surprised I don’t have malaria.

Hi. I’m learning so much from your channel and just wanted to reach out and thank you.🙏 My young butterfly bush has some yellow leaves, so I’m wondering if you have any advice on why the leaves are yellowing, and how I should tackle it?
As you're going into the Winter season, you'll get a bit of yellowing leaves. It can be from too much water and nothing more than that, as well as the plant starting to wind down for the Winter season. Perhaps cut back a bit on watering it, and see if that helps. You can pick off the yellow leaves too, as it won't harm the plant. I hope this helps! Please keep me posted.
I just bought my second butterfly bush! Thanks for the tutorial. I will start tomorrow! Can these lovely bushes be potted in large containers?
Hi Pat, yes they can be potted into large containers! Which variety did you purchase? Some grow much larger than others, so if you purchase a dwarf size it will keep longer in a container than some of the larger ones that may need to be either potted up into an even larger container or planted in the ground. Great video thanks so much. I have a Pugster Blue in waiting. My front garden is mostly amended with clay deeper down. It ws probably amended improperly as well. I believe I have a good spot that is higher ground. I'm confused as to what I should do because not amending the soil was previously recommended. This garden also has a weed barrier and mulch. I'll remove the barrier around the bush, mound up and not mulch. Should I use existing soil mix or further ammend to be quicker draining. I'm a newbie and appreciate any advice. Thanks again!
I've read not to amend, even with clay soil.
I have the exact butterfly bush, and planted it in a container.
I have single petaled knockout roses and they have a nice fragrance but the double ones I use to have had no fragrance.
Hi Roger -- I agree that the single petaled Knockout Roses have a nice fragrance. The breeder of Knockouts claim that only two of their single-petal varieties have fragrance: the white variety and the yellow variety. But I agree with you that I detect a slight fragrance on mine. The breeder also says their double Knockouts don't have any fragrance at all. So at least we can appreciate the subtle fragrance from the single petaled ones we have, right? 🙂
The direction was clear , BUT when you actually move in to cut your hands and the bush moving are blocking the actual cut....maybe two cameras are needed simultaneously...one from one angle and another from the top right of your snips to capture the actual cut. Hope this helps you to get your intended shots in the filming for the lesson

You're welcome Liz! This variety (True Blue Butterfly Bush) is a sterile variety, meaning it does not produce any seeds -- so I never have to worry about seedlings! 🦋 I'm not sure I'd want to necessarily plant more butterfly bushes from seed, as it might take awhile until they grow to a nice shrub-like size. However, I'm sure there are gardeners who have successfully done it. 😃 The gloves are made by CoolJobs, and if you scroll back up into the "description box" area, I have a link to them on Amazon so you can see what they look like and read more info about them. I love them and swear by them . . . and that's an un-sponsored comment!
I have a butterfly bush that’s several years old. The spouse cut it all the way back before spring. Is that necessary? I was not happy…
Well, it's not "necessary" however, the plant will benefit from such a hard pruning back, and will produce flowers all over the plant. Sometimes when butterfly bushes aren't cut back (I have a separate video about pruning them), the plants grow very tall and the flowers can almost be out of view as they only grow at the top of the plant on the new growth. Not sure which butterfly bush you have (there are SO many!), but pruning back hard each Spring is recommended actually to get lots of new stems all over the plant which in turn produces lots more flowers. 👍 However, I can imagine the surprise at seeing the plants cut down! 😲 💛

You said you raised the soil (raised bed?) a couple of feet, but it doesn't seem like you raised it that high. What am I missing?
Hi Mick -- we built this raised bed back in 2012. It has settled quite a bit over the past 12 years, unfortunately. (The bottom layer of stones is barely visible above the ground anymore.) Sorry for any confusion! 😊

Hi there -- Buddleia come in all sizes, so it isn't possible for me to tell you how high they will get since each one is different. Mine get to be about 4 to 5 feet high in the Summer. But there are also dwarf varieties that only get to be about 2 feet tall at the most -- and there are taller varieties that can grow up to 7 or 8 feet too. I have another video on how to prune Butterfly Bushes so you can see how far down I prune mine, and they still grow back up to 5 feet high! Thanks for your feedback Marcus! 👍 As many TH-camrs do, I include Chapter headings in the Description Box (below the video and above these comments) so that anyone who wants to jump directly to a particular section can do so. I also come at every video as a learning process, especially for newer gardeners who may not be as familiar as you are with gardening. So I find that explaining why gardeners may not even need to deadhead is helpful to cover up front -- especially if someone is watching who has one of the newer varieties I mention that don't need to be deadheaded. They can stop right there and move on! Also talking through supplies and what the flowerheads and stems look like before diving into deadheading can really benefit newer gardeners as well as gardeners who have never pruned their butterfly bushes before. So that's how I like to approach my videos: covering the overview, the why and the when, and supplies before showing the how. I hope using the chapters will help you next time, and that at least this explains a bit of my process. 😃 Thanks again! 🦋
