The schools in my area provide every child with an iPad and do all lessons on the iPad even when the kids are in school. This was also happening pre-Covid as well. The kids are on screens the entire time and I just don’t think that’s healthy. At the very least school should be a break from screen time to focus on learning and social interaction. Unless something drastic happens by the time my kids are school aged I am pretty sure we will be homeschooling as well.

I could have made this video lol - I grew up in public school and told my husband that I would never homeschool. He was homeschooled his entire life, but luckily didn’t have that expectation. Then....I taught for a few years and that sealed it for me. I’m not anti public school (it took my sister, who is a public school choir teacher, years to not take our choice personally) but I know that it’s not efficient for all kids, I was a self motivated child so I excelled in school. But there are so many students who don’t thrive in that environment. My oldest is wild; he’s crazy smart but he is wild and I knew he would struggle in public school. We enrolled him in a tiny private school when we were expecting our third child and my fears came true - he had a hard time controlling himself, and then was following after this really awful, bully kid. Luckily, we’ve been able to homeschool going on two years now and it’s made such a difference. He’s wild, but he’s not confined to a desk for 8 hours. All of your reasons are excellent - I taught in a struggling area and you’re absolutely right about there not being time for struggling students to really grasp a subject. If they don’t get it, they’re pretty much screwed, which is so sad and such a disservice to kids. Homeschooling gives you SO much freedom.

If I had the option to be homeschooled, I would’ve chosen it, 💯. Having attended public school myself, I can confirm that it iDEFINITELY wasn’t for me. I wouldn’t have missed out on social development or anything else. For the way that I learn, UNSCHOOLING would’ve been ideal. Autodidacts who don’t care for cliques and fitting in, would benefit from homeschooling.
With the internet now, there’s no shortage of learning resources or social connections. I always felt so cut off from the possibilities of life, having grown up in the 80s, since all I had was the people on the ground, in my immediate neighborhood. I was always proactive in pursuing my purpose, but when none of the grownups are interested in helping you, there’s not much a kid can do, except wait for adulthood.
I’m glad Charlie has such caring and enlightened parents. 😊 You guys are doing a great job! 👏 👏 👏

You’re so sweet, thank you! And I also agree that I would have also thrived in that environment. I think public school made me lose sight of my true self in a lot of ways. 💛

The call of the wild + free book took my desire to homeschool from “maybe we could do this..” to “yes!!! This is what I want for my children!” Such a good book ❤️

I’m a former teacher and I want to homeschool at least up until middle school when I have children so I totally get it lol 👌🏾💕 I would say kids need order though. It can’t be too haphazard or “winging it”.

As a former public school teacher I think your idea is fantastic. Until schools ( and the government, for that sake) are able to punish kids, and adults for breaking rules, breaking laws, etc. public schools will not get better. Some private schools might be good while others have major issues.
