    One of the most bizarre parts of FF trivia - to me at least - is the knowledge that the American synchronized swimming team took bronze in the 2004 Athens Olympics after doing a routine to this song. I remember very vividly just hanging out with my mom talking and playing with my dog while the Olympics were on and just hearing that and just sort of... freezing and looking up in disbelief that it was at the Olympics.

      It's a great tune, much like the rest of the OST, so I am not surprised to hear it got used at some places, very nice track and is very dramatic. And in 2004? You'd have to be a nerd to know what it is from, lol.

    I was at a Distant Worlds Final Fantasy Concert this year and they used this song as the opening.

    Another part of the reason this song is so well remembered is that this song is referenced constantly in other parts of the soundtrack. Musically speaking, Liberi Fatali is the "core" of FFVIII's soundtrack, and acts as a recurring motif at various important points in the plot.

  • @Harpsibored

    I still stand by this being one of the best FF tracks of all time and my personal favorite. I realize I'm biased because the way it's synchronized with the events of the movie (that you didn't watch lol) is just fucking fantastic. How do I begin to describe this piece? Layered, dynamic, frantic, imposing. I can tell you how many times in my life I've been obsessed with just the damn TIMPANI part in an FF song, and it's the time I've heard Liberi Fatali, and that's it. Bottom to top, just crazy good.

    i love final fantasy 8. the music was the best. i used to back in the day load up the game and stant in balam garden just to listen to the music for hours on end. one really nice audio bit they used during the intro that i found spot on was the sound of squalls gunblade spinning and hitting the ground, the audio used for it fits into the song and even drives it forward with the sound of it hitting the floor. a truely masterful way to use sound effects i think.

  • @macigimagic

    I always come back to 8 for its music and cool designs. I have never finished because game mechanics and story never carry it for me to the end. It just starts feel like a chore at some point but still i come back every time. I have completed many other FF games some even multiple times 4,7,12 to say few and at this point accepted the fact that i never will complete 8. Still one of the most nostalgic things to me is to hear Don´t be afraid and crack of Quistis´s whip at start of random encounter, sometimes when i think that song those starting animation noices characters make are part of the song in my mind and i can´t hear it without my mind adding them to the song.

    • @Trollamollex

      @@macigimagic Yes and actually it's one of the most rushed FFs in the whole franchise. One of the guys who worked on it said that it had like 70% of the content they wanted in it at the most.
      I think that lots of the desert area gets boring along with some of those other spots that surround that section. The magic system isn't engaging enough especially with how you grind it and there just isn't enough between disk 2 and 3 to make you really want to jump into the next section.
      It's my favorite FF for aesthetic and music reasons as well as the more "realistic personalities and situations", but the lack of challenge and long drawn out sections where it's not too exciting do cost it lots of points imo. Probably the most boring gameplay and plot wise out of the 7 through 10 (which was the golden age of FF imo).
      Still my favorite out of the main line up of FF.

Granted, I wasn’t yet listening to music (or conventional music at least), but I did at least somewhat enjoy the soundtracks to games like Soul Reaver, Metal Gear Solid, And Spyro the Dragon. I did find one game’s soundtrack to be so enthralling and that game was Crash Bandicoot 3, but that came out a little later iirc.

That's why for us old timers - this particular song holds a big place in our hearts (for FF fans anyway). Listening to it now without context for "newer" players... it's more like a "cool but mehhh!!" I think nostalgia is is with this one. Crazy thing is - I like the Distant World version more than the original.

  • @fanglespangle110
    @fanglespangle110 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's really worth considering the context of the time. When this came out, video game music was changing dramatically. Coming from the SNES where you had like... 5 channels, a small box of instruments and immense limitations, PS1 really lifted the limitations (PS1 in particular had excellent sound hardware) and you can really see Nobou stretch his legs on this OST. I remember my mum hearing the music and having heard me grow up on things like Mario or Sonic, was familiar with chip tune. She was kinda blindsided by the music coming out of my room (this song in particular actually)
    FF7 was on the PS1 too, but was developed back in a time when nobody actually knew what hardware the game was coming out on. (They assumed it would be Project Reality, that eventually became the N64) with no indication as to what the audio capabilities would be like and you can still hear it in a good 90% of the FF7 sound track. It still keeps to a set number of tracks, the instruments are clearly from a keyboard sound chip, they tend to be short loops rather than focused and intense pieces with different movements and motifs. But then you get One Winged Angel so at some point, some idea of exactly what they had to play with came about. Probably quite late in development. This is before Internet was really used for development. So the project management would have been different to how it is today. It would have been really difficult to go back and change a bunch of tracks that were already done. With this OST, they would have fully known what they were working on and what they could do with it and it really showed.

      The lyrics aren't latin. They're an anagram of the two themes of the game in english. No latin words have an -os or suffix unless they are second declension nouns in the plural accusative. Latin also doesn't have the letter W, and the dipthong sound in wicos isn't correct either. If it WERE latin, it would be "vuicos", which is the latin word for "village" in the accusative plural.

    Infinite% should look at the cutscenes or where the music takes place... if youre concerned for spoilers i am sure youre can watch the imagery after lisening to the song but some are 100% made with the cutscenes in mind.

    I love this so muuuuch, I prefer it over OWA and so I've been waiting to it ever since you reacted to that one :D I'm your opposite, if people told me to imagine something from LF or OWA, I wouldn't remember anything musically from OWA :D
    As I've said before, I will not be able to watch your playthrough of it because I plan to play it myself in the nearer future - but I might at least tune in to see your reaction to this opening (which I didn't know was the opening until people on the server pointed it out)

    Hi Jesse, very happy to know you'll be playing FF8. Will there be vids on TH-cam? I hope I could catch you live, but it's really tough with my timezone (it's 2 in the morning for me when you start).
    Anyway, thanks for all the amazing videos, hope you have a great time playing FF8 :)

    The song name is Latin, meaning 'Fated Children'. It's named after the protagonists of the game since they're all kids in their late teens (17/18) y/o).

    Totally up to you, but this opening is excellent as a trailer for the game, as well
    But now if you did choose to play it, after this, the marvel of that video is yet preserved for you

    Ah, you were relatively recently sent a song with sound effects in it, with the Library of Ruina, the snapping sound was a game sound effect added to the compilation as a transition designator.

    When you compare FF7 One Winged Angel to FF8 Liberi Fatali, you can just hear the huge leap in quality of the sound of the vocals and music in general when you consider it is still the PS1

    • @darrylrobson4376
      @darrylrobson4376 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well One Winged Angel was midi running off the PS1 chip (except the vocals). Liberi Fatali is an actual recorded orchestra - it's not running off the PS1 soundchip, the PS1 is just playing back an audio file, like a .mp3 file.

    I see you with the GTA2 Title track. Good shit. Also yea when this game came out I was young as hell and thought it was gonna be related to FF7. HELLA disappointed as I'm sure you can understand.
    However, you're right. It was bizarre at the time, but quickly became a classic. If you watch the FMV with it, you get the full package, but if you're clashing with SFX and expectations, it can be weird.

  • @valence686
    @valence686 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I feel like Liberi Fatali with the latin choir and all is somewhat directly into the continuation of One Winged Angel, and after all came just after. I do believe to a lot of people this piece is way higher because it's (one of) the main theme and leitmotiv (you may have noticed its theme in the Landing as well) and taken as a whole vs just taken from this piece alone, just isn't the same thing imo

  • @ace3slOfficial
    @ace3slOfficial 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Liberi Fatali's lyrics is written in Latin which portrays the term 'Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec' as 'Succession of Witches', which is a runnning theme of FFVIII... there is a vanilla version of the song in YT without the Opening Cinematic SFX'es, and probably you would've been better hearing that than this one for clarity... But then again, this piece has been one of the most iconic music throughout the whole FF series, alongside FFVII's One-Winged Angel and FFVI's Opening Theme...

    • @ace3slOfficial
      @ace3slOfficial 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      also, Liberi Fatali means 'Fated Children', also a recurring theme of the protagonists...

    The name means "Fated Children" which refers to the cast, as the party are all older teenagers.
    You actually could (should?) have watched the video because it's just the opening FMV to the game, and as such doesn't really spoil anything.
    I remember getting the demo for this waaaay back in the day and being completely blown away by the graphics and music. Like I legitimately thought that games could never get any better than FF8.
    Really don't wanna spoil anything as you're about to start a first run, suffice to say 8 is fairly janky in many regards and I don't just mean the plot but I hope you love it :D

    I know I'm not a patreon and it sucks that youtube has screwed all of you content creators over in such a way that you all had to implement an economical class system to take requests. If i had the money to help support i would.. and the current state of youtube reminds me of my my place in the world. It sucks and this is totally a dig at youtube and not you. But I hope one day you get to final fantasy type 0 and get to have that experience!! Especially what 'becomes of us, the beginning of the end'.. it is an amazing experience. Ff type 0 in my heart has the best music of all final fantasy games.. I know we all have our own likes and dislikes and type 0 is my like.. so I hope one day it's something you check out. I'm not going to hype it up because all of aren't the same. You might think it's skunk shit or mediocre.. but the accomplishment is, you got to listen to it. 🍻

    Hm? What was that? No, FFXIV, it's best not to pressure him into playing your content. It's best just to let him come over naturally. Yes, I know he's put in numerous hours on other FF games. The day will come, though! When he can no longer resist! :p Sorry, Jesse...had to.
