many of Stockton's entry passes to Malone that ended in turnaround fadeaways (about half of Malone's shots) were not credited as assists when he was averaging 14assists per game. Had the man been playing in today's NBA he'd be averaging over 20, easy. Same with Magic the truth is a huge amount of today's games "assists" credited are not at all assists. The count we have today is artificially inflated to keep pace with the massive scoring increases.
This is true, and the assist rule had already been loosened up some, which is one of the reasons Magic and Stockton had such gaudy numbers. Earlier, a pass to a jump shooter or a post entry pass would typically not give an assist. Someone should go back and see how many assists Oscar would have gotten under today’s rules.
@@AngryOldHoops Please have a breakdown of Jokic passes, as I have pointed out in one of my comments, to prove this inflated counting. Sabonis to a lesser degree gets credited assists in a similar dribble-handoff fashion
Lebron passes the ball to someone who later scores - assist. Lebron looks at someone who later scores - assist. Lebron on the bench, looks at the court - assist. NBA Video Rulebook: "...an assist is not credited...unless the passer is Lebron James."
LeBron shoots an airball that is rebounded, dribbled to the 3 point line, then scores - assist. LeBron throws the ball against the backboard, grabs the ball and scores - assist.
Lebron throws the ball directly to a defender's feet during a 3 on 1 fast break and referee making the right no-call: ref being scolded and told how stupid he is by the GOAT on live tv

If not it leaves it up to the person filling out the box score interpretation. They don’t get a reply they scoring it as it happens. Just saying he’s needs to review other assists to get a avg of how many times they get it wrong for other player vs lebron then that will prove he’s getting favoritism.

Mj's stats were inflated in '88 due to him paying his own scorekeeper according to his own scorekeepers words, "michael paid me well". Michael would literally go up to the front bench and they'd tell him he needs x more of x certain stat. This is all documented, a whole yahoo article documented this. This is the play-by-play era where AOH showed 1 example of a possible mistake from the scorekeepers at home, i n which there was no evidence or instances of lebron paying his scorekeeper. In the 80s and 90s they didn't have to re-check the stats after the game was over, all they had to do was announce the stat on the play of the scene as it is. In today's game scorekeepers have to retrack the stat and accurately assess them BY THE RULEBOOK which is why lebron didn't have a 50pt triple double at MSG because they took a rebound away.

This is gold, turn this concept into a video series. I'm sure people would help by sending you time stamps from other examples, coin no terms like "Not a Triple Double" and with a half season or so data collected we could make a fair estimate on how many of his total assists are fake. Even that Marcus Smart example on the NBA site was suspect imo. A player catching the ball flat footed on the perimeter and then going into a drive is not an assist to me, I'd be more open to giving credit to a guy cutting, catching a pass, pump faking then scoring. At least the 2nd example lead to something
Assists should only be given when the player receiving the pass takes 0 dribbles and scores, that would make things so much easier. There's too much room for interpretation by homer statisticians
When was Lebron even a top 20 player? He has always played solo "heroball" to get his stats get his moments, in what world is that a quality basketball?
Here are some stats you can’t fake or pad: 0.8 offensive rebounds per game, 0.5 blocks per game, 0.6 steals per game. Those are his stats from last season for a guy who averaged 35 minutes a game. When your 6’8, 250 pound “superstar” gives you no hustle stats, it’s hard to win. Per Fadeaway World: “Of the 42 players averaging at least 34 minutes per game in the NBA in 2024-25, James ranks 41st in distance covered per game at 12,254.5 feet.” But the assists!
You literally just said that Lebron averages 35, and put the line at 34, obviously he's gonna be on the lower end of that stat, why not show distance traveled per minute? You also conveniently left out the fact that that was in his 21st season at 39 years old. Name one other player who was averaging 35 minutes at 39 and contributing, unlike MJ's shot chucking at a 45% fg and 29% from three, while Lebron was shooting 54% and 41% at the same age, while finishing top 7 in apg and top 15 in ppg.
John stockton would have 25,000 assist if they counted assist like this in his era. It also shows how great of a PG he was when at the time he played, it literally was a pass that lead to a basket for an assist. Now even with this loose way of counting assist he's still the leader
Regardless of what the rulebook says, the whole concept of assists is that someone "sets another player up for a basket." After receiving a pass, if you have to create your own shot and work past defenders to make a basket, it's not really an assist.
This is why I can't stand people that throw around stats when debating how good players were in each era. Imagine how many assists Stockton and Kidd would have if they played today.
I wonder if any Yahoo journalist will take this story as they did about the 1988 DPOY award. We have been saying they give out assists like candy but none of the major platforms want to shine light on it.
People often overlook the undeniable truth: LeBron James is the reigning “icon” of our time according to the media. He’s not just an athlete; he’s a phenomenon, meticulously crafted under the powerhouse of Nike. At the heart of this spectacle lies one simple truth: it’s all about revenue-pure, unadulterated MONEY. Nike is determined to elevate LeBron’s stardom to stratospheric heights, and why? To sell the brand. This is marketing at its finest, and it’s high time we grasp this reality. Buzz, controversy, and star power are the currency of this game. As long as they can monetize LeBron’s name and generate millions, he will be heralded as “The Goat,” King James, in their eyes, and they’ll push him over anyone else. Nike is the titan behind this operation-a juggernaut that shapes public perception. Notice how we don’t see other incredible talents, like Stephen Curry, receiving the same level of elevation? It’s simple: Curry is Under Armour, while LeBron is Nike. This distinction is everything. The whole narrative is a grand performance, a business strategy aimed at maximizing profit. Think about it: the emotional rollercoaster of teams, players, and statistics pulls fans in, making them invest their hard-earned money, time, and passion into this corporate machine. The goal? To reap as much profit as possible. This is the reality of the sports world, where the lines between passion and business blur, and the spotlight shines brightest on those who can sell the dream. LeBron is the current “cash cow” because they’ve invested many assets and resources into his “character” for over two decades, there’s no one who’ll be able to replace him immediately once he’s gone, so they need to get as much money out of his name as possible before he’s too old and retires.
I am 100% sure if you apply this kind of scrutiny to *all* of LeBron's stats, you will find that his numbers are extremely inflated. Remember when they assailed MJ's DPOY season? They are guilty of what they're accusing MJ of doing, which is why they know where to check, how to check, and who to check.
U have to understand 1 thing and 1 thing only if ur not a CASUAL. LeDiddy was never in control of his life. I remember this at least a decade ago when i was telling people his stats are fraud and that one game. He has like 6 assists and he finishes with like 12, and I watched the whole game and he didnt have no 12 assists. They just added some in at the end
Having a special set of rules for a specific player is pathetic, but if you have to dribble the ball past a defender to score, that's an individual play, not an assist. This "direct reaction to the pass" rule is ridiculous and it's made for stat padding.
AD moves into position for a crossover, and creates his own shot in the process. Lebron gets the assist, and the credit for a pass by the commentators as if he did something in the play. It's ridiculous.
It's not just this, it's the benefit of the whistle on both ends. He has CONSTANTLY gotten away with offensive fouls on offensive, and non-calls on defense. Then you add in the extra 6-8 free throws a night on garbage love taps and flopping, and this dudes career would look COMPLETELY different if called like everyone else. He'd still be an all time great, but no where NEAR Jordan. He'd be around 30-32k points with far fewer triple doubles and at least one less ring. The league gave him the Cleveland ring anyway, and then the bubble one was a joke.
I'd take it one step further. Passing to someone while both players are behind the 3-point line shouldn't ever be awarded an assist, except for a made 3. If someone has to create their own shot by driving to the basket from behind the line, it's obviously not anything to do with the pass.
The ODDS of getting an "Offensive Rebound" are nearly ZERO in the new millennium since the shooting team doesn't even bother to contest the rebound. In fact, this practice is SO BAD, the "REBOUND S" stat is now pointless. All 5 defensive players stand there and just "decide who wants it". That is what's called "COMPETITION" in 2024.
All the old NBA players should pay a few referees to go back through all of LeBron's gametape and calculate what his stats would be under the REAL rules from the 80s and 90s.
Maybe there's something in the rulebook we missed that says there's an exception if your LeBron James or anyone currently being propped up as the face of the league. Must b in the small print somewhere cuz that's the only thing that would make sense.
Thank you. I’ve been trying to tell anyone who would listen that the league has become so laxed on the criteria for an assist. It’s literally the last person to have passed the ball gets the assist no matter what the offensive player does Even the Marcus smart example is so horrible when it comes to how the media claims “X player” is creating offense. Did Marcus Smart do anything special? He just swung the ball and gets a stat saying he “created offense” assists are so much overrated
You diddnt miss anything, LeFlop is a LeFraud. Scorekeepers are more than likely P Diddled to artificially make a "king" outbof a guy that can't dribble, play d, shoot etc.
Remember when we had some dumbasses (Nick Wright among others) question MJ's stats during his DPoY saying that some of his stats were fabricated and were 'homecourt stat padding'. Heck we even had BBallBreakdown & Johnny Arnett do an entire video about that subject. I say than WTF do these guys have to say about Lebron's stats?
This shit is crazy. I never realized they were giving him all these assists. I know the assist rule this is ridiculous. I’m 61 years old and I’ve been watching basketball since 1980 and this is utterly ridiculous. he shouldn’t even be close to getting all those triple doubles fucking NBA.
I'm a huge fan of Chris Paul. Chris likely gets some generous assists in his own right, now being literally second all time in assists. That said, that LeBron assist in the beginning...I've literally seen Chris make passes like that and not get credited for them.
So you can make and assist giving the ball UNDER your own basket, after an opp scores, to your team mate. Dude drives the ball aaaaall the court make a shot, scores and thats your assist? Thats amazing
As always, if one looks at Michael Jordan videos becomes clear that he is underrated actually and by looking at LeBron one can understand that LeBron James doesn’t know how to play the game of basketball because this is the way LeBron James played for at least the last 10 years, prove me wrong!
LeBron probably gets ton of these types of non-assist assists from the NBA scorekeepers and so do a lot of others. It's made the record books irrelevant from what the game was before the 2000's.
In the first example AD travels immediately upon catching the ball, then executes a discontinued dribble before driving to the basket. Imagine what I could've accomplished in high school in 1979.
But the players are so much more athletic and skilled than the plumbers back in the day! The people who say that don't seem to realize it's easy to look more athletic and skilled when you get to routinely cheat.
besides that anthony davis carried the ball while jumping with both feet in the air and landing on the same foot that last left the ground before dribbling again
It's like taking the your elderly parents keys to the car, Lebron won't stop playing. Though difference being Lebron is out to prove he is the goat not just competent. Which he is neither!

many of Stockton's entry passes to Malone that ended in turnaround fadeaways (about half of Malone's shots) were not credited as assists when he was averaging 14assists per game. Had the man been playing in today's NBA he'd be averaging over 20, easy. Same with Magic
the truth is a huge amount of today's games "assists" credited are not at all assists.
I should break down one of those Stockton games
The rules, as written, are perfect imo. The problem is that they're not enforced well, especially when it's LBJ making the pass.
I think the Stockton entry pass to the turnaround shot that Malone took to become 2nd in All-Time scorer was counted as an assist 😀
@@AngryOldHoops Please have a breakdown of Jokic passes, as I have pointed out in one of my comments, to prove this inflated counting. Sabonis to a lesser degree gets credited assists in a similar dribble-handoff fashion
This actually has such huge implications with all the over/under betting nowadays.
And people wonder why I keep insisting that legalized betting was the beginning of the end of legitimate professional sports.

If someone had time, they could come up with at least 100 examples of what happens at 0:35 over the last 5 years alone. I have literally been making comments for years now about LBJ handing off the ball, the receiver making 2 dribble moves to beat their man, driving to the basket for a contested layup and somehow LBJ gets an assist.
Seriously, does he have actual fans?! Am thinking they are all either bots or paid hacks at this point. I mean whwre is your standard if you still idolize LeGoofy as a player.
They did. It happened. Go look at the mentally ill @anonymousperson8903
Damn, this is a disgrace. The NBA is doing all of this for this overrated & narcissistic bum! The Nba is straight up 🗑 now.
They probably make this mistake all the time not just for lebron. Definitely not an assist but did we review enough film to prove that this only happens for LeBron?
It’s done by human right? We mess up
The Rule leaves it up for interpretation. Need to make the rule more clear cut 1-2 dribbles or no more then 3steps something. If not it leaves it up to the person filling out the box score interpretation. They don’t get a reply they scoring it as it happens. Just saying he’s needs to review other assists to get a avg of how many times they get it wrong for other player vs lebron then that will prove he’s getting favoritism.
@@itsfroggertv2068 read between the lines of what they said smh. The NBA definitely changed a lot of rules to cater to LeBrons play with his lack of ball skills. There are probably legitimately 70 or more illegal screens a game it’s actually insane that they are allowed so blatantly.
I'm HIGHLY in favor of more and more of these kinds of videos. They're imperative after these pathetic Lebrick Stans were dumb enough to try and question Jordan's stats. Jordan's steals that could've been credited to other teammates were still a result of the chaos he created with his constant energy; Lebrick's "assists" and "rebounds" are being inflated by literal bastardization of the NBA's actual guidelines on what constitutes an assist or a rebound.
And like I've said many times before: if you really wanna probe a treasure trove of fake assists, check out games from the 2020 season for Lebron. At least a quarter of his so-called assists were of the fake variety
I just wonder how many assists per game Magic and Stockton would have under LeRules. Heck Wilt would have had triple double season, and Oscar probably more than one
A lot of old players would average triple double imo, the “WORST” player from 90s/2000s to average a triple double would be Brad miller (he was a good passer), MJ, Magic, Pippen, Bird, Barkley, shaq, Hakeem etc
Assists are an absolute joke stat now imo
@@rta23cerberus heh, don't know if he could average one, but yeah Brad Miller would definitely at least 10-15 a year of them. They would love the fact he was 3 point capable. He would have thrived being born 15 years later than he was too
Mj's stats were inflated in '88 due to him paying his own scorekeeper according to his own scorekeepers words, "michael paid me well". He literally did this to help him up his mvp and dpoy case, because he didn't win it in '87, jn the '88 season MJ had the biggest home-away differential split compared to every other DPOY winner, actual scorekeepers and no not AOH rewatched those games and found blatant instances of the steals being inflated by doubling them.

Back in my day, and assist was a catch-and-shoot. If there’s a dribble, no assist.
NBA Rule Book clearly states, if Lebron passes the ball to anyone and that person scores on that play it is classified as an assist and it’s mandatory that commentary mention Lebron James basketball IQ
maybe even on the next play
I like how you use the NBA rulebook videos as evidence to support your arguments, reminds me of the one you made on how he gets away with dislodging.
I guess anybody who makes a pass to a player who scores gets a assist, guess you could pass the ball in bounds and the player scores that's assist.
That would be logical. As long as they don’t slow down.
The thing I HATE about the way the NBA records stats now is that it completely invalidates all of the stats from the past just so the NBA can say "look at our players now - they are recording historic stats."
The current NBA will try everything to make their product appear better but its not fooling anyone that saw the real NBA of 1980s - 2010s. It's a disgrace
Whenever they're inevitably voting Lebron in to the HOF, this video needs to be playing on a loop on a giant projector, in protest outside NBA HQ.
Right after the flopping video😂😂😂
I rather it be clip after clip of him standing around on both offense and defense
No, no, no, every single one of those is a great idea! HELL, we'll just loop a short documentary that includes "The Decision" in the beginning and Bronny being drafted in the credits 😁
Proof this goofs stats mean absolutely nothing… empty assists that aren’t even assists, uncontested rebounds, and lay-ups are what this guy brings to the table. And ppl wonder why he has a losing finals record & built superteams when he realized he just couldn’t do it like the all-time greats did…
Need everyone to watch this video
This is gold, turn this concept into a video series.
I'm sure people would help by sending you time stamps from other examples, coin no terms like "Not a Triple Double" and with a half season or so data collected we could make a fair estimate on how many of his total assists are fake.
Even that Marcus Smart example on the NBA site was suspect imo. A player catching the ball flat footed on the perimeter and then going into a drive is not an assist to me, I'd be more open to giving credit to a guy cutting, catching a pass, pump faking then scoring. At least the 2nd example lead to something
the league being so desperate to pad lebum's stats is an admission that he's nowhere close to jordan
Lechump in my opinion isn’t even top 20! His only attribute is his longevity and that’s only because of his steroid use!
Someone needs.to investigate this lol
Per Fadeaway World:
“Of the 42 players averaging at least 34 minutes per game in the NBA in 2024-25, James ranks 41st in distance covered per game at 12,254.5 feet.”
But the assists!
At this point, they should just completely fabricate the boxscore while he sleeps on the court the entire game.
They do.
Good lord I never realized how bad some of these are. Luka Doncic would have like 18 assists a night if his assists were calculated the same way
Thanks again AOH you are the truth.
John stockton would have 25,000 assist if they counted assist like this in his era. It also shows how great of a PG he was when at the time he played, it literally was a pass that lead to a basket for an assist. Now even with this loose way of counting assist he's still the leader
They call it „more talented“ nowadays! No defense, every pass is a assist, no travel called, flopping like hell and 3 pointers all day long!
If that LeFraud PASS counts as an Assist then "Classy" Caitlin Clark would have 30+ a game.
Imagine how many assists Stockton and Magic would have...
In a more honest league, he averages 10 ppg 2 rpg 2 apg. And that's being generous.
And 8 fouls
10 fouls per game
I think an assist should only count if it's less than two dribbles, otherwise that's really more an iso or skill play by the dribbler.
3:06 "3 Total Dribbles, 7 Total Steps and A CARRY." AHAHAHAHHA!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great video!
Keep exposing that FRAUD
Having a special set of rules for a specific player is pathetic, but if you have to dribble the ball past a defender to score, that's an individual play, not an assist. This "direct reaction to the pass" rule is ridiculous and it's made for stat padding.
The NBA is now like WWE. It's basically just a show.
National
Basketball
Entertainment
And not a good show at that
True, but the NBA still tries to pretend it is a legit competition, at least the WWE admits their shows are scripted and staged
You guys need to stop comparing the NBA to the WWE. The WWE is actually entertaining 😂
Nah never an all time great. He Travels RELIGIOUSLY. He's a bum player with excellent marketing.
Thank you for your service, Angry Old Hoops!! Your analysis is SURGICAL!!
It’s literally the last person to have passed the ball gets the assist no matter what the offensive player does
Even the Marcus smart example is so horrible when it comes to how the media claims “X player” is creating offense. Did Marcus Smart do anything special? He just swung the ball and gets a stat saying he “created offense” assists are so much overrated
1 of many reasons why viewership is going down. The rules are in flux and very loosely interpreted
You diddnt miss anything, LeFlop is a LeFraud. Scorekeepers are more than likely P Diddled to artificially make a "king" outbof a guy that can't dribble, play d, shoot etc.
Travel, travel, travel. Its ridiculous.
The NBA has watered down so many things like scoring, ball-handling & defense that it's basically street ball at this point.
They let him travel, carry the ball, and hit people with shoulders and forearms.
Of course, they give him fake assists.
1 dribble limit for assists
That’s also traveling by Davis.
One of the more informative videos I've seen recently. Well done!
and they are selling us that the players are more skilled now? they tried to make them more skilled by changing the rulebook.
It's kinda like this in all the major sports now. They all went and became like badly programmed video games
AD did 2 hesitations before ever beginning to dribble toward the basket. Those hesitations are almost palming but we know that is not called.
I was a statistician at a DIII school in the mid 90s. You got one dribble
These refs and stat recorders need to be drug tested!!
They do not want to open that can
This shit is crazy. I never realized they were giving him all these assists. I know the assist rule this is ridiculous. I’m 61 years old and I’ve been watching basketball since 1980 and this is utterly ridiculous. he shouldn’t even be close to getting all those triple doubles fucking NBA.
And Davis travels during that move :)
Wow I knew it was exaggerated but I didn’t think it was this egregious. Some of these “assists” are just one on one plays, it’s not even close.
Skip Bayless said Lebron was the best passer in NBA history
LeBron’s entire career is like Wrestling…all fake and scripted! 😂
And AD loses 1 "unassisted basket" to his stats 😂
besides that anthony davis carried the ball while jumping with both feet in the air and landing on the same foot that last left the ground before dribbling again
