    Finally! Universities will have to recognise that having students write 10,000 word essays for their assessments is going to have to stop and they will have to invent new ways to assess students! Why this has not happened before now is a mystery for me with so much cheating going on! The gulf between the creaking thinking of the UK universities and what's technologically possible has never been wider! But if it's not broken don't fix it right?Long live ChatGPT!

    Hi Russell, one thing we have to be careful with is the mistakes that the chat might produce. For example, when creating the cloze exercise sentences, the chat generates the answers but the first one is grammatically wrong (using the present simple 'is' with the temporal marker 'for 20 years'.
    That's something that a human teacher would spot but apparently the chat will not.
    Thanks for the video!

    • @ttvRussell
      @ttvRussell  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The instructions you give have to be very clear and you can ask for corrections too but yes you are right- unfortulately there are occasional mistakes, it isn't perfect.

    Thanks, Russell. It was surely only a matter of time before we had a video from you about this phenomenal tool. Some great examples and uses shown here. Last year everyone was playing Wordle; this year everyone seems to be giving their thoughts on ChatGPT - which is a total game changer! I will have to have a serious discussion at work about how this might/will affect our university students. I know some colleagues have already played around with it, as have I.

      @@ttvRussell yes my initial reaction - a month or so ago - was that it was a threat - but I think a lot of the hype and concern might be overblown. It's good to look at both the benefits and drawbacks - as you allude to but don't go into here. Look forward to the next video with interest.

    One caution about specifying text difficulty levels. chatgpt will accept the instructions specifying a difficulty level relative to some standard like Cefr, TOEIC, West GSL etc but the output may include structures and vocabulary outside the target.

    • @ttvRussell
      @ttvRussell  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a good point. Overall though, I am very impressed with how it produces content at different levels. Today I tried to ask it to write a text at varying levels and it did a good job. So same topic etc but levels A2, B2 and C2.

    • @SpanishObsessionLucie
      @SpanishObsessionLucie ปีที่แล้ว

      totally. I say beginner and it uses subjunctive.... It can do websites and Facebook ads but it is really bad for accurate, bullet proof study materials and exercises still. It mixes levels, provides wrong conjugations, leaves out random words... I tried to train it many times but it's easier to create the gap fill myself... :D :D

    Thank you, Russell. I am amazed! When I asked ChatGPT for a reading activity, the first version was okay, but it had very few nominal groups and they were short. I requested a second version with two or more words before the nominal group head, and the new text was much denser with the kind of nominal groups I wanted for my advanced students. It's like magic! ¡Brujería!

    Thanks Russell, this really helps to understand this new technology! It will certainly not only upend teachers' jobs, but also lots of other roles. Already, a lot of translators are out of work (with deepl etc), but this will certainly also put many other competencies out of fashion (who needs journalistic skills, if you can ask ChatGPT to do it..). Worrying, as there are less and less "real" competencies needed, what does that say about our civilization, when you do not need to put in an effort to learn something? Learning is maturing..

    Thanks for putting this together! Interestingly the cloze activity 'answers' give you the present perfect form, not the present simple you asked for. I've had the same experience with ChatGPT 'conversations' - sometimes it goes back to an earlier part of the thread instead of following on from the most recent prompt.

    Hello Russell and thank you for this video about Chat GPT. When I first heard about this technology, I had mixed feelings about it. The more I learn about it, the more I realize how threatening it is for teachers like me. For example, I will suspect any homework done by my students as I am not really sure that THEY did it. Another thing that frightens me about Chat GPT is that it will REPLACE a lot of teachers. The French literary critic Roland Barthes wrote about the death of the author and it seems to me that we should now write about the death of the teacher. Thank you again.

    A teacher's dream and a cheater's dream at the same time!! Obviously, assessment practices, especially in online courses, will have to change where academic honesty and integrity are the standard. For online writing courses, maybe a room camera capturing their area, their writing and the screen of their device--terrible for privacy. Or maybe a new career, the traveling proctor.

    I've been trying for a few weeks but Chat GPT seems to be incredibly dumb when creating ridiculously simple gap fill exercises. You say leave out 20 words, it leaves out 37. You ask it to fix it 3 times, using different wording, it leaves out random 15 words, You tell it to provide you a list of the words it left out, It provides you a list of random words that were not even in the original text. Unbeliavably wasteful. :D

    • @SpanishObsessionLucie
      @SpanishObsessionLucie ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OK. After 11 failed attempts to make chat GPT to create a good Gap-fill exercise without errors I think I hacked it :D LISTEN! This works. Use these instructions. To make the gap fill exercise meaningful and effective for students, you'll need to provide them with certain elements:
      Step 3: Provide Clear Instructions
      Instructions: Start by providing clear instructions to the students about what they need to do. Explain that there are gaps in the text, and their task is to fill in the missing words or phrases. You can also specify the type of words they should use (e.g., nouns, verbs, adjectives) or any other relevant guidelines.
      Step 4: Organize the Exercise
      Formatting: Format the exercise in a clear and organized manner. You can use a table or a simple list format. Each gap should be numbered or labeled so that students can easily identify where to insert their answers.
      Word Bank (Optional): Depending on the level of difficulty or the learning objectives, you may provide a word bank with the missing words. This can be helpful for beginners or when introducing specific vocabulary.
      Step 5: Create an Answer Key
      Answer Key: Prepare an answer key that includes the correct words or phrases to fill in the gaps. This is essential for grading or self-assessment. Make sure the answer key corresponds to the gaps in the text.
      Step 6: Review and Edit
      Proofreading: Before distributing the exercise to students, carefully proofread it to ensure there are no errors in grammar, spelling, or formatting. The exercise should be free from any mistakes that might confuse or mislead students.

    • @SpanishObsessionLucie
      @SpanishObsessionLucie ปีที่แล้ว

      I asked it to explain this to me. Then I copy pasted what it wrote back to it and now it creates good exercises LOL
