Good on you Bro. I remember these 70's 80's & 90's games. It sure was a different era then. As a Vic living in SA, did I stick it up em. I was in enemy territory & didn't care. I gave it to em. They hanged their heads in total defeat. I was a glorious time. Rock on Bro.
This is why State of Origin is awesome, two champions of the game playing in the same side together, playing against other champions of the game, it's an All-Star game. Bring back State of Origin! And up the Big V!
That's your nostalgia kicking in. Anyone who grew up with it has the times ingrained with good memories. I like current day footy 100x more and will probably like these players more than any good player in 30 years.
Imagine the SA team briefing: "Don't worry, you're not playing on Lockett." "Oh, thank god, that's a relief." "No, you're playing on Ablett instead." "Oh, fuck my life."
This was 2 years before my time but imagine being old enough to live the days seeing Ablett snr and Lockett on the same team hands down best foward duo ever.
Plugger proved once again why he is the greatest like he did in the 1989 state game if he had the luxury to play in finals at his peak consistently like the others did everyone would know what Saints supporters always knew he is the GOAT
What I would give to be able to fully experience footy in the 90's... Lockett, Dunstall, Carey, Modra, Ablett and State of Origin. The greatest decade of Aussie Rules.
With the AFL membership from early 90s taking in MCG, Waverley and Princes Park it was a smorgasbord of live footy every weekend. 24 games was never enough but having a mate of the gate helped. Saw it all.
I was there that day and I forgot how great the football was. The match has rightfully become remembered for EJ’s lap of honor, but there was some terrific football on display as well. (Side note: it was cold AF that day.)
That was super, a really great display of football. Better than anything from 2020, and the dreadful congested flooding game of today. Wasn t Dunstall in the other forward pocket. What a lineup of superstars.
Ablett with the second efforts too, that kick off the ground to try and snake a goal after missing the mark tells ya everything. Wants it so bad. Champions
Ah when AFL could be played without having to replace the umpires whistles due to wear at 1/2 time. RIP AFL rugby is starting to look better each year.
I really enjoyed the 2000s period of footy, and I loved all the way up until 2018. The only thing I can't stand about the game now is the over umpiring. It's slowing everything down and if we can find a way to reduce the amount of infringements then the game will have never been better.
How the hell the AFL let State of Origin disappear is beyond me .... Ridiculous decision ... NRL kills it every year with their games , So much so they even play one in Victoria.. AFL has lost it's way for sure ....
Rugby League has two States pitted against each other. AFL has the 3 Big States which makes it hard to work out who plays who and when. Throw in the fact that Tassie considers itself an AFL state and then you've got more people vying for a right to play off. The other thing is the injury factor. No AFL club wants to risk it's elite footballers now that Football is big business. My personal opinion is that it could work but only if there was some massive sponsorship deal to reward those Clubs whose players qualify for selection. It looks to me that we'll never see it again. A shame since Aussie Rules doesn't' have an Elite level to step up to. Club level is all that there is so we don't ever see the best of the best.
1989 rivalled this when they had Lockett and Dunstall together plus Brereton. Lockett fed The Chief a bit that game whereas here both Ablett and Lockett did their own thing.
Definitely need to bring the state of origin games back. Could be played the bye week before GF, or even as part of pre season games, much better then the garbage international rules games.
People talk about how the defenders can't do anything to forwards these days without giving away a free kick. Well, at least you don't have blokes kicking 10 on you every week like the old days 😂.
I’m so glad I’m old enough to remember and enjoy 90s footy
I'm so glad to be old enough to remember 60's footy, kB, Royce Hart, Francis Bourke, all the legends
2 of the greatest players of afl history
Victoria - Stephen SILVAGNI, Garry LYON, Tony LOCKETT (Whitten Medal), Gary ABLETT (C), Paul COUCH, David NEITZ, Gary O’DONNELL, Jim STYNES, Nathan BURKE, Anthony STEVENS, Wayne SCHWASS, Michael MANSFIELD, Duncan KELLAWAY, Stewart LOEWE, Damian MONKHORST, Wayne CAMPBELL, Mark BAYES, Garry HOCKING, Matthew KNIGHTS, Brad BOYD, Robert HARVEY, Ang CHRISTOU in my opinion one of if not the greatest Victorian team ever assembled, I was there that day when Teddy Whitten did his lap of honour, I cried like everyone else, my god what a forward line, the likes that’ll never be seen ever again, how blessed were we in the 80’s & 90’s with the talent, even Stephen Silvani who himself kicked 10 goals in a game on several occasions played a dynamic game at full back, Gary Lyon at centre half forward, Gary Hocking and Paul Couch and Wayne Schwass, the list of champs goes on, Rob Harvey, Jimmy Stynes, holy shit, there’s a team that’s win ya 10 premierships straight, the only game of footy I ever saw with my old man and I treasure it, thank you for reviving this memory, Lockett to Ablett, Ablett to Lockett, doesn’t get any better than that, yibbida yibbada that’s all folks

Diesel, Roos and Archer would be great ins
Of course they'd win 10 straight. It was three quarters of the all Australian team every time the big v played. Should've made it Vic vs the rest.
Lockett and Ablett, the dream team forward combination. Like a well oiled machine, never getting in each other's way.
This is why State of Origin is awesome, two champions of the game playing in the same side together, playing against other champions of the game, it's an All-Star game. Bring back State of Origin!
And up the Big V!
Won't happen, sadly.
Bring back afl origin. Fuck the big v. (Croweater)
Lockett and Ablett, 2 of our all time champions. ...... they were absolutely brilliant in this game! thanks for the memories Footylovr.
My, how much the game has changed. It was definitely more enjoyable in the 90's.
Everything more enjoyable in 90s peak cricket, footy, nba etc etc
That's your nostalgia kicking in. Anyone who grew up with it has the times ingrained with good memories. I like current day footy 100x more and will probably like these players more than any good player in 30 years.
You weren't even alive back in the 90s😂
@@jackduncan7214 It's not nostalgia though it plays a part, the game was much more enjoyable in those days, entertainment factor cannot be disputed.
Imagine the SA team briefing:
"Don't worry, you're not playing on Lockett."

Lockett: I'm having an ok day, 4 goals to half time
2020 AFL Teams: We're having a great day, 4 goals to full time
No don’t use the nobody template
Plugger proved once again why he is the greatest like he did in the 1989 state game if he had the luxury to play in finals at his peak consistently like the others did everyone would know what Saints supporters always knew he is the GOAT
Great to watch 2 of the best footballers of all time !
What I would give to be able to fully experience footy in the 90's... Lockett, Dunstall, Carey, Modra, Ablett and State of Origin. The greatest decade of Aussie Rules.
I turned 21 in 1990. Im probably biased but I agree with you 100%
With the AFL membership from early 90s taking in MCG, Waverley and Princes Park it was a smorgasbord of live footy every weekend. 24 games was never enough but having a mate of the gate helped. Saw it all.

2 of the all time greats along side each other...
@MANCHESTER UNITED I've seen you say that on a lot of AFL posts for a person who loves soccer you sure do watch a lot of AFL
@M And so what ? I still love the AFL as much as ever.Don't care about the other 240 countries !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is why 90s footy is better than today. 2 key forwards kicking bags of goals.
Champions
Locke'tt' & Able'tt'. PERFECT TOGETHER UP FORWARD.
Remember how fiercely and seriously these games were contested.
Bring back the days of superstar full forwards kicking big bags
Lockett & Ablett awesome forward line, how can you defend against these two.
badly
Jeeez Ablett was unreal in this game... You almost wonder if it was a digital simulation!
One of the best days I’ve had thanks plugger and Steveo and Harvey were magnificent
Imagine if Tony had ever taken it serious and was super fit .
He will be the benchmark for a long long long time maybe even the greatest ever
He’s brilliant but no Ablett
@@NoBody-ht1oh 7 goals and 3 direct assists, 2 to ablett. Lockett is the GOAT.
@@swordiexd bullshit
2 of the greats no doubt. But Gary is number 1 no doubt
he got super fit for his comeback and i reckon it worked against him - he lost his bulk.
So refreshing to see one on one play - not multiple defenders teaming up on forwards
I loved going to the 90s state of origin games
Iconic. Bring it back
The days when state footy was taken seriously.
This was the only state of origin game I ever went to. It was going to be too good to miss and the Vics did not disappoint.
Wow thanks for posting!
I like them both. They both were chamipons but stayed out of the media and limelight. Humble
The days of brilliant players.
Absolutely. They were great players AND they had character and personalities. They weren't brow beaten into becoming robots like today.
The two best EVER
Will never see a more formidable forward line
The Vic team that had Lockett, Ablett and Dunstall was even deadlier
Goosebumps

Did you know that in the 1970s there were 70-100 free paid per game. It's not the free kicks that hurt the game it's the coaching
How's Lockett's mark at 1:48 for a guy of that size? Freak.
His speed is exceptional, too.
The last great State of Origin game.
How the hell the AFL let State of Origin disappear is beyond me .... Ridiculous decision ... NRL kills it every year with their games , So much so they even play one in Victoria.. AFL has lost it's way for sure ....

Bring back state games!
We will never see a dream team footy combination like this again, or footy players like Ablett/Plugger again…
Plugger didn't seem overly keen to shake hands with Richard Champion at the end of the game.
Anthony Stevens was deadly, sending inside 50 over and over again.
The good old days 😢
Not sure what game they play these days under the guise of AFL football, but its certainly nothing like this!, 😢
It’s a lot less about the midfielders then. It’s so pro forwards but it works. It’s the essence of football.
1989 rivalled this when they had Lockett and Dunstall together plus Brereton. Lockett fed The Chief a bit that game whereas here both Ablett and Lockett did their own thing.
Defenders would have had nightmares for weeks in the lead up to this game.
And fo weeks afterward too when it came worse than their fears!
What a great footballer Anthony Stevens was too! Are my eyes deceiving me or did Tony Lockett refuse to shake Richard Champion's hand after the game?
Definitely had the shits with Champion there. Didn't shake his hand and gave him a spray too.
Champs is a tool not worth a handshake from the king
you know youre going to have a rough arvo when youre up against those two. Richard champion did well but he had no hope.
What was the final score ?
Victoria
Ablett: 2,402 400 . 2
Lockett: 2,401 400 .1
Bloody hell, what would their DT/SC scores have been?
I always thought Plugger and God would look good in a Carlton guernseys and this is proof
Only game in history Stevens pin pointed passes in the forward line. At North he just bombed it.
Definitely need to bring the state of origin games back. Could be played the bye week before GF, or even as part of pre season games, much better then the garbage international rules games.
Just those two names in the
same team would leave an
opposing coach head#@$&$$
People talk about how the defenders can't do anything to forwards these days without giving away a free kick.
Well, at least you don't have blokes kicking 10 on you every week like the old days 😂.
Wasn't this in 1996, the Ted Whitten motorcade one?
1995
Imagine if they had dunstall as well
Ablett is bigger and more athletic than Mal Meninga. He would have been good NRL/rugby Union player
He would have been the best at whatever code he played. He was a specimen. A scary good athlete.
What do you do in this situation but cry.
South Australia had no hope 😀
...
Imagine if the chief was Victorian.
SA could have put 15 back in defence….same outcome 😅
Looks like bruise free footy to me!...😮
Too bad State Of Origin isn't around any more.
Wonder if they were drug testing properly in those days
Overpowered much?
Thay all sit to pee these days
All these players from yesteryear , i dont think theyd be a stand out in the modern game.
They stood out back in their day. Why couldn't it happen in a fully professional era today?
@footylovr the game has changed significantly.. just as I don't think any modern day players would be the top back then
Go Kangas
I still hate Gary Ablett’s face, great footballer horrible bloke
Bring back State of Origin Football.
When AFL was fantastic, now the game is sh*t.
