  • My second Avant Slot car following on from last week's Mitsubishi Galant.
This striking livery was raced at the Rallye Cote d'Ivoire in 1986 by a nearly unheard of Lebanese rally driver.
Brand new at time of recording (May 2024) this car should be in stock at all good retailer by the time this video airs.
A huge thank you to Steve Wright at Staffs Slot Cars UK for expressing this to me so that I can give you a youtube first review.

Great video again Dave. There's two things I really love about your new car reviews.
Firstly, taking the body off and checking the workings on every new car.
When you buy a brand new 1:1 car it's given a "pre-delivery inspection". So even though it's likely been driven off the production line and on/off a transporter, it's still given a final once-over before it's let loose in the world. Doing that with *every* new slot car only makes sense. And I can't think of any self-respecting race team that would get a new car and put it straight out on the track before making sure that at least a basic set-up was done first. The fact that you do this every time is excellent practice to my eyes and brilliant to see.
Secondly, I love the fact that you don't automatically reach for the lead sheet or tungsten putty.
Colin Chapman has been revered for his pursuit of "adding lightness", so I'm bemused by so many slotters habitually doing the opposite seemingly without learning how to drive a different car first. Adding weight slows acceleration, lengthens braking and gives the tyres more to do in the corners.
Some manufacturers add magnets to disguise the lack of tuning and it seems that many slotters do the same with weight. But you don't do that as a first step and I love that.
Add to that the fact that you describe what you see rather than fall in with 'accepted knowledge' or common expectations about cars and brands, and what we see as viewers/subscribers is wonderfully informative and engaging. Keep it up - I for one love it!

You can't tune a car until you know how it drives and therefore what needs doing , I agree that weight is a crutch to lean on far often than it's the solution

Love your channel, but I think you're mixing up Tony Pond with Jimmy McRae. Pond never drove the Manta, McRae drove them from '83 to '85, cheers, and keep up the great work.
