Today we go in-depth on how both Panarin and my former teammate Gretzky taped their twigs. Thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe for weekly episodes!
I have a Gretzky game used stick from ‘89. I had to see if his tape job matched up, and it’s exactly how you described it. You can see a strong diagonal start and ends on the back. Pretty cool
Love these stick taping vids. If you think about it, Gretzky's initial ("awkward start") tape placement makes sense. It's is due to the heel that he's taping above the bend. If you tape from toe to heel and include the bend in the heel, you eventually get to a point where the tape will slingshot across the blade like that. Then taping heel to toe, you probably get the most grip on the puck with the edge of the tape. In addition, none of tape will undo itself it's under the subsequent tape on the blade. I tried to do it with my tape job when I first started playing, but the awkward start is hard to get just right to get the perfect tape overlap that I want (overlap half the width of the tape at a time). I still love the concept, but I made the compromise (long ago before I learned about Gretzky's tape job) to tape toe to heel since it's so much easier to do without getting hung up on how to start the tape. But then, Gretzky taped way more sticks than I ever will in my life.
should i keep it tight? Just kidding. Love these videos. For multiple reasons. Good to see you healthy and your passion for the game close up. And this makes me feel "closer" to the game and to understanding some of the nuances of the games great players. What a joy to see. thanks Marc.
Great stuff man keep it up. Expanding this further and talking about all the pro stock gear like curves and skates and what not would be super intresting aswell.
Looking at pastrnaks tapejob, do you think there is even a point in using tape when the blades come with grip? (optional) I dont know if its worth making a video on his tapejob but curious on your opinion on how much tape really matters. Also stickwax, ever use it? Dope vid Savy you're a legend
How do you feel about putting an extra strip of tape along the bottom before taping the blade to prevent the part that contacts the ice from wearing through faster? I did that growing up to make my tape last longer. Great vids by the way, keep it up.
I used to do that but over time Ive found I want everything to be as light and thin as possible, for both the blade and handle. I find that a thicker tape job on the blade reduces my control for shooting and handling
I never knew Marc lived in Peterborough... I do remember him bringing the cup to Peterborough back in 2011, now that i'm thinking about it... but its something that totally slipped my mind over the years that Marc is a Peterborough boy, kinda makes me enjoy his videos that much more being from Peterborough myself and Its awesome to know that Marc is still a small town guy after years of living and playing in big cities. Im sure you know this already, but encase not, Marc is now the head coach of the Windsor Spitfires as of '21... so he must live in Windsor now. Do you know if Marc ever had a team role with the Petes over the years he lived here, post retirement? Its kinda wild to think Marc was a Peterborough resident for all these years and our hometown team didnt take advantage of it... maybe he was asking to much salary-wise for the Petes to hire him, maybe for some reason he didnt want to work with the Petes having been a Oshawa Generals player and thats the Petes long standing rival... or maybe he did work with our team over the years and im just obvious to the fact.
You are not doing the panarin Tape job, the only thing u got right was that he has a black tape string at the forehand. He does not have black tape on his backhand and the white tape he uses he tapes from the toe not like u did to the toe.
some players like white tape on the blade as it allows them to read where the puck is with a quick glace down at the blade, some players believe black tape helps hide the pucks release point from goalies and other players. I use to use white tape when I was younger for the reason I stated above, but I switched to black tape because I just like the overall looks way better especially since I dont use white sticks at all, it just makes for a cleaner and nicer overall looking stick imo... and with white tape being so popular to use on blades, I like the fact my black tape is more unique and of course so much more clean and stealthy looking... its really just all personal preference and habits

I like how a former nhl'er like savard starts doing hockey tutorials on YT! Keep it up!
This is amazing. This would be a cool podcast where you critique players tape jobs.
It's so cool to see and hear about the styles and the reasoning behind these things, it often gets overlooked!
Panarin tape job looks sick
Love these stick taping vids.

Really fun video!
I'd love to hear your opinion on pastrnaks tape job. Love these videos! Glad to see you're doing well
What a great use of tape !
Very interested in a Matthews and Marner vid, thanks for doing these!
Awesome. Best. I always obsessed about tape.
Ever think about doing a keepers twig? The king has a neat job, the part above the paddle is cool.
Keep up the vids!
great job savvy, i used to tape my goalie stick a little different but Tuukka's looks good.
Love the vids and the Gretzky one especially! How about a Petr Klima one haha, surprised we've never seen anyone copy him.
Love the videos. Great for all hockey players and fans. Wondering if you will get into talking about the individuals lie and flex they use. Thanks
These are great videos. Only critique is the portrait recording..
Cam Lemieux I think this is one of those rare times where the portrait recording works
Thanks for the vid :)
I play with a couple guys who STILL baby powder their tape jobs before our games
It’s so random but awesome
Why do they use it tho?
Playing dirty is my hobby they use it on the knob to remove the sticky ness from the ware
Your TH-cam channel needs a profile pic! Keep the vids coming Savvy! They’re good luck for the Bs this season.

Dope vid Savy you're a legend
iPLAYhockeyallday it’s for grip and so the stick doesn’t chip
I use it because it protects my blade
iPLAYhockeyallday io
I have a stick that has the grip it’s not bad but it will mess up your stick if you don’t put tape on it
He probably does that cause as kid he said tape wasn’t cheap and he said that it always gave him luck or sum idk honestly
Love it
Great video, I'd love to see some defensemen's tape jobs!
dude I looked up to you a LOT as a kid
Any of the ladies in the Olympics have tape jobs worth noting? Were there any wacky ones from when you played in Switzerland during the lockout?
Just subscribed to your channel. Love it! But anyway we could get some goalie tape jobs???
Good shit Savy
How do you feel about putting an extra strip of tape along the bottom before taping the blade to prevent the part that contacts the ice from wearing through faster? I did that growing up to make my tape last longer. Great vids by the way, keep it up.
Lasts longer, but you lose some feel for the puck... no?
I used to do that but over time Ive found I want everything to be as light and thin as possible, for both the blade and handle. I find that a thicker tape job on the blade reduces my control for shooting and handling
Can you pleeeease do a vid on a Brett Hull stick. I ve Always wondered his stick and curve on his stick. Thanks Marc
TIGHT!
Do a stick of one of the ducks. Getzlaf or Perry! Cool video.
What benefit does the baby powder have?
Will this tape job damage the bottom blade of you stick from the ice
You should make a podcast where you talk about hockey related topics, for example you could have segment where you talk about players tape jobs.
Pretty sweet. I tape mine like I think ovechkin does, would like to know if I'm doing it right.
Looking back on this video I realized people put the strip on the back he actually doesnt
Im down for Matthews and Marner tape jobs next
Glad to see your feeling better Marc! Love to see some bruins tape jobs because I am a huge fan of them and you!
Know any of Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, or Milan Hejduk's tape jobs?
Matthews and Marner video would be dope
did you play hockey in the NHL
How about Bergeron’s tape job
How about a D-Man, I know you're from Ottawa, can you get Karlssons?
Lets see some Bergy & Marchy.
Panarin only puts the black o. The forehand side
I'm sorry but what's the problem with the number 33?
Good stuff, man! Hope to see more from you. Maybe goalie tape jobs? :p
Why did he use powder?
Nikita Soshnikov does the exact same blade tape job as Panarin.
I think Panarin only puts a length of black tape on his forehand side (no black tape on the backhand side)
true
Do the turris!
I'd be interested in seeing a guy who goes toe to heel like Malkin or something!
Kucherov goes toe to heel
toe to heel is bad
@@aaebsssb9914 no
Evan F.T. yes
@@aaebsssb9914 why
Do Alex Ovechin

Why did Gretzky use baby powder on the blade?
Dale Ellis I’d like to know also.
How about Doug Gilmore tape job. Almost same as Wayne gretzky .

Do anyone but The leafs xD
Homies makes double sided tape
I hear you want to coach jr hockey. Why the OJHL? You live in Peterborough, im sure lindsay could use your help!

Messier’s tape job?
Pararins tape job is dust
You also seen him put baby powder in a sock and spread it all over ( perfectly )
He doesn’t start that far up
Anyone else surprised about how big Gretzky’s curve really is?
I want to see Rasmus dahlin and Seth Jones
Are you actually savard
No bro Wax no Babe

Why won’t panarin just use black on the whole blade because white just on the toe is kinda ugly

I feel he's lieing about playing with gretzky
Are you stupid or something
Please wear socks.
