I loved the film back then because it was so immersive and felt real. I hope that some creative people try to do the same marketing strategy that Cloverfield did. Nothing hypes an audience more than mystery and a movie perfectly made to delivery a thrilling ride.

Loved this video! Great work! I remember being a kid in 2007 seeing the 1-18-08 teaser and being both terrified and incredibly intrigued. The following months I spent so much time following the ARG and marketing closely. I have a ton of nostalgia for the movie and I always have a blast watching it. I equate it a theme park ride. It isn't an amazing layered film with a deep plot, BUT it is one hell of thrilling experience that is a feast for the senses. I do admit that part of the enjoyment was being there back in 2007 and 2008, so I can understand why someone jumping into the movie now wouldn't quite like it as much or at all. I'm extremely excited to see how the direct sequel turns out. Happy 15th anniversary Cloverfield!
This is genuinely one of my favorite horror movies, I personally think it’s the best PG-13 horror movie ever made. The end of the credits is by far the scariest part to me
I do think its a great film. Because it explores an angle that is so under used by monster movies, the people on the ground during an attack, from their perspective.
Cloverfield is the BEST monster movie! I love it! I was in school, so i missed all the viral advertising but saw it in the theatre and have loved it ever since. I'm completely fine with a simple story. What is important in life becomes very simple during times of intense stress/facing death. The last movie I saw with my mom before she passed was this movie bc we both love it so much. I love monster movies in the theatre, but this is the only one I watch again and again on my TV (besides Jurassic Park, the original!). Cloverfield is by far the best of its genre, with the OG JP coming in at a close second. I would love to see it again in the theatre! Also, i think it is at least genre changing if not "life changing" bc it's the only monster movie (wherein the monster attacks a city) that feels like you are there, experiencing it as opposed to fantastical shots of the monster amongst the buildings. You are there, too. You get very few shots of the monster bc it is about the human experience of it, which is what makes it so compelling. honeslty, i always cry at the end, which no other monster movie does for me. The characters only feel simple bc we are with them for a very short but very intense time. Cloverfield is one of the best, most inspired and creative films, and i love it! That's my two cents.
I didn't know about all the marketing! I don't know if it's because I'm from another country or maybe because I watched the movie later, I don't remember when I did honestly but I do remember being so scare and fascinated by the mystery of a HUGE monster. They did a good job showing the confusion of a normal citizen in a situation like that! I love Cloverfield! And I'm loving your videos! Keep it up!

I remember watching this for the first time back In January this year, this was legit a movie that genuinely made me scared. Something that not a lot of movies have managed to do for me. This honestly (besides Chronicle) is my favorite found footage movie and the direction was really good. Especially the acting and of course; the monster. That close up towards the end could give anyone chills 😰

Found Footage films are my not-so-guilty pleasure. Especially when they were first becoming popular I found them to be so much more immersive than the regular kind of horror movie. To be fair, it seems these marketing campaigns are largely concentrated on the US so I'm not surprised I missed out on the hype. My favorite found footage films are Blair Witch Project (of course), Cloverfield, Grave Encounters and Troll Hunter. Honorable mentions for Chronicle, As Above So Below and The Pyramid. Some of these are, admittedly, kinda bad but it just doesn't seem to bother me the same. Maybe it's something about it being an amateur camera angle and "live footage" approach that makes it easier for me to disregard the "bad" and suspend my disbelief. Cloverfield is just a gem and a classic for me. You're right, it's a thrill ride and I'm not sure it tried to be any deeper than that. I was personally especially fascinated by the quite unique monster design and the way they created such a feeling of fear and dread even, or maybe especially, with it off screen. Anyways great video reviewing this movie 15 years later
I remember watching this when I was younger and constantly asking my parents to put it back on over and over, and now getting back into after years of ignoring it and learning more and more about it just warms my heart. I even learned as I was watching this video that the Statue Liberty head flips a red car onto another car and launches a mail box into some dudes friend. Cloverfield will always be one of my favorite monster movies for its visuals and lore.

i dont really understand criticisms about character for movies like this when that isn't what the movie is trying to excel at. we all know matt reeves can craft incredibly well written characters (the batman, planet of the apes) but cloverfield is a way more story-driven film, and honestly the characters are done well enough for me to feel some connection to them during their journey.
I still hope that someone has plans for a true sequel I know a proper sequel is being made but man, I’d love to see Matt reeves idea of getting other found footage perspectives of that night Sure it may be too predictable I guess but so much is open for speculation
I saw Cloverfield based on a friend's recommendation a year ago with no knowledge of the movie's history and I enjoyed it. It isn't particularly impressive, but it's a fun movie. The sequel, 10 Cloverfield Lane is a significant step up though. John Goodman's performance is incredible there.
ARG's and Found footage have been two of my favourite mediums for telling a story since i was like, 10. I've always loved Cloverfield, both for the movie itself and the lore and viral marketing it had, it's such a fascinating movie really not like any other, i love a lot of things about Cloverfield and you basically covered all of them in the video, although one i don't think you mentioned a lot is that Cloverfield unlike other Kaiju movies, specially at the time, was about a group of civilians, people, caught in the middle of the disaster, trying to survive, it utilizes something that i love about Found Footage, the limited perspective. It's a group of people with a camera, and in this gigantic disaster, there's millions of people going through the same events, a lot of them also recording with their own cameras, yet we only get to see one perspective, it's something i always loved about found footage and Cloverfield uses the subgenre to its advantage. Btw i own Cloverfield on Blu-ray and its fuckign awesome i wanna own the 15th anniversary edition i dont think its that expensive
This was incredible as a cold watch in the theater. It was so funny because of the guy holding the camera until he died.... and the way it made you feel sick sometimes...but in a good, filmmaking way...I'll always remember when that girl's head exploded. Great film. 7 stars.
The Cloverfield film series should have been merged to the Monsterverse. It would be good to see how Cloverfield would do against Godzilla & King Ghidorrah.
Sometimes all you need is a thrilling experience with a lot of explosions. The characters being very dull and ordinary just heightens the feeling that it could be you and your friends caught in this traumatic but fascinating event. I love this film, and knowing my tastes I would have loved it all the same had I watched it for the first time today. Mind you, I didn't know about the marketing at all when the film came out, I just watched it for what it was.
Thank you talking about this movie. I wished it got more love in recent years. I hope we do get a sequel even though it’s been almost 20 years since it’s original release.
I cant explain how fixed on this movie and all the ARG related to it I was back in the day. It felt like someone never done before. Im super excited for the next installment and hope they can bring the same kind of intrigue and mystery surrounding the film.
awesome video man! interesting point about the depth of the characters in this movie... I agree but at the same time I have a theory that the lack of depth was somewhat intentional. In terms of the 9/11 influences, watching footage of that day there's a lot of shots of bystanders just watching the towers and/or processing everything that's happening, we don't have any emotional attachment to them cause we don't know them but we are getting a glimpse into their day-to-day lives and it being interrupted by tragedy. I think this movie has a similar feel to it where we are just being dropped into these peoples lives and seeing how they react to it being interrupted. So many of the shots in the movie are spitting images of reaction shots from 9/11. In fact I think the movie wouldn't have had the same affect if the characters were deeper, I think it would've been distracting in a way. The purpose of this movie was to see/relate to how every-day people going about their lives react to something of this scale.
Worth remembering? Basically it's one of the most influential movie of last decade. Just count the amount of film with similar nature spawned after its release. Hell, we got Godzilla rebooted after this, even where its influence is visible.
The soundtrack for this movie is something else I feel like you forgot to include that with the Godzilla similarities they gave cloverfield a fitting soundtrack for the monster
Cloverfield is one of my all time favorite kaiju movies because of how unique it is. It feels so real yet has the distinction, using its unique style to create a film as tense as Gamera Revenge Of Iris and as striking as Gojira 1954. I love this movie.
I will never forget this movie. The first movie to genuinely leave me with an unsettling feeling. Those spider things in the subway tunnel still freak me out. It’s awesome
This is a great movie to just let play without explaining the plot. Everyone I've showed it too is really immersed in the drama before the attack and enjoy the chaos
I adore this movie. It’s a really cool monster horror movie, and I’ve always really enjoyed it for that simplicity. The ARG stuff is just a cherry ontop of that for me as I also really enjoy analog horror when done right. It’s really good at what it does like you said towards the ending. It’ll always be one of my favorites
I'm glad someone mentioned 9/11 and CF in the same sentence, when this movie came out 9/11 was still relatively fresh and the effects of it were being felt still withe 2 wars. I don't think it was a bad thing either. The characters here were utterly scared and naive to what was happening similar to the people at the WTC on 9/11.
I watched it recently for the first time and thought it was one of the worst horrors I've seen in years, it had absolutely nothing for me. Now i get it, I missed on the advertising and watched it on my laptop. At least I was there for the Blair Witch hype
In the RPG sphere, there was an ARG for a game called Alpha Omega: the beginning of the end. The campaign was so cryptic, that it actually got confused and thought it was part of the Cloverfield ARG.
For me, it's a really cool concept of viewing a giant monster/kaiju attack from the the people's perspective. How normal everyday civilians would react to this type of scenario. I've always wanted to see that from a Godzilla movie. And recently, people have started to make fanmade found footage Godzilla videos, the same way as Cloverfield does. Except one in particular, one centering around a scrapped Godzilla villain, known as the Gryphon. In that video, we see the fight between Godzilla and the Gryphon from multiple views. From people recording in the streets, their apartments, as well as news stations filming from a helicopter or a skyscraper. I'm glad this type of style is making a come back. Even if it's on TH-cam.
I think I watched Cloverfield halfway in over my brother's shoulder in high-school and dismissed it as dumb transformers esc shlock. Then I watched it as an adult one night out of curiosity, and It made my stomach actually drop. Like it actually did, I've simply never had a movie do that to my body before. The first explosion starts that feeling and it carried me on that ride till the end. At the same time, havnt re watched since, probably would showing it to friends. I totally agree that it's just a subjective experience of a movie, so much so it made me in particular lose my shit , which was totally unexpected but welcome lmao I have plenty of movies that I can hold up as favorite stories, have the best characters in them etc etc. I lose nothing by letting Cloverfield be "the only movie that made me physically lurch" that's UNIQUE gotta give it up 👏👏👏👏
Lost, Cloverfield, and BWP all had the Myst aura. It captivates you and makes discovering almost anything completely interesting. Always did appreciated an element of mystery, often never perfectly explained, when mixed with discovery. Even something like an early Resident Evil game, with its tame piano music and robust setting, made uncovering backstory part of the positive experience. That said, there came a point with Lost where I believe carrying on an "endorphin abuse" strategy did overtake the story and art.
I can't stop wishing I had watched this in cinema. I was eight and even if I had known English back then I wouldn't have been able to fully grasp how more interesting the advertising made the movie (yes, I still don't know english, my god, is hard to write a phrase, anyway)... so thank you for this video that gave me an idea of it ❤️
I just watched it again the other day, and while not brilliant character or storywise the found footage monster movie gimmick does still work. I do like the characters even if they're only superficial ones. Hud and Marlana are still standouts, and Rob I guess has an ark. Either way enough is there that I still find it re watchable.
This was a great example of a film where the marketing absolutely surpassed the film itself. I was a big fan of Lost and was REALLY into the whole online promotion of Cloverfield. Then the movie itself was such a goddamn letdown.
The thing about this movie that sticks out to me was the company and armour support column that appeared from fucking no where behind the group and spawns in when the monster appears. 😂
Matt Reeves admitted that the 'satellite' you see falling into the ocean at the end of the movie is actually a meteorite carrying the monster (Clover) and when Clover is destroying the city she's actually confused and looking for her family
One of the Best Monster HORROR movies. Unlike other giant monster film, it's a *deconstruction* of a Kaiju movie through the lens of civillians, much like small ants caught in a behemoth of a giant; and said behemoth is a _frightened_ monster which is fish-out-of-water to the world foreign around itself, quite opposite of an angry monster destroying city for sports cliches? It's much terrifying and tragic. And no direct explanation about the creature's origin, unless you read the viral marketings, ARGs, and filmmaker's commentaries... or *spoilers:* if you watch The Cloverfield Paradox.
Do we think this film could’ve been better had they wrote a script with more complex characters and possibly took a little more time to flesh them out (the film is not even 80 minutes before credits hit). Personally, I love this film, but I do think they could’ve done better fleshing the characters and performances out. Maybe made it where it’s a husband trying to save his family?
Plus if you're from the nyc area there's an added depth that you know the streets the monster attacks so you can think "oh shit I've been where these people are. What if that happened to me?"
I loved the film back then because it was so immersive and felt real. I hope that some creative people try to do the same marketing strategy that Cloverfield did. Nothing hypes an audience more than mystery and a movie perfectly made to delivery a thrilling ride.
Honestly Cloverfield has one of the coolest monster designs I’ve ever seen.
It has an almost alien design, but it's based on enough real-world animals that it looks plausible. I love it as well.

babe wake up new meeptop video
Indigo’s Findings had a great vid analyzing Cloverfield and its cultural legacy, and I think it’s a good companion piece to this video
That piano cover near the end really caught me off guard but thematically made perfectly sense!
To be honest, it's the best Kaiju film out there!
This film has lots of suspense and tension in it that gives off ‘A Quiet Place’ vibes!
Cloverfield really did sparked my love for foundfootage movies, it really gives me a first hand experience in the characters experience
I'll never forget seeing that trailer in theaters. That was the beginning of one of the most obsessive experiences I've ever engaged in.
Your channel is excellent, so glad I found your content.
Cloverfield is one of my favorite movies of all time. Totally stands the test of time.
I watched it recently for the first time and thought it was one of the worst horrors I've seen in years, it had absolutely nothing for me. Now i get it, I missed on the advertising and watched it on my laptop.
At least I was there for the Blair Witch hype
I was a little kid when it came out and I know about a little bit of the lore, but I still thoroughly enjoy it and I worth remembering. 4/5
I loved this movie. I remember going to watch it in theaters back in 2008. Its definitely worth remembering.
I loved the movie, and your video was spot on. Thank you.
I totally agree that it's just a subjective experience of a movie, so much so it made me in particular lose my shit , which was totally unexpected but welcome lmao
I have plenty of movies that I can hold up as favorite stories, have the best characters in them etc etc. I lose nothing by letting Cloverfield be "the only movie that made me physically lurch" that's UNIQUE gotta give it up 👏👏👏👏
I saw Cloverfield 3 times when it came out. I loved it lol. I still really enjoy it.
The story becomes much more layered once you fully consider the entire trilogy
I can't stop wishing I had watched this in cinema. I was eight and even if I had known English back then I wouldn't have been able to fully grasp how more interesting the advertising made the movie (yes, I still don't know english, my god, is hard to write a phrase, anyway)... so thank you for this video that gave me an idea of it ❤️
“Is Lost Worth Remembering?” next 👀
This movie is what made me both an arg fan and a kaiju fan
banger of a film
still always pops in my brain once in a while
I love your videos! can you do a video analyzing Black Mirror: Bandersnatch? i would love to hear your opinion about it!
I actually used to live close to where they filmed that
I watched it at the year 2022 and I thought it was good, I didn't realize it had this much hate.
I'm glad that some people liked it
Really cool marketing, very bold not even showing the title like that.
I like your choice of Soundtrack. I remember it when Nathan drake was trying to take out the tank.
I remember watching this in the theatre but having to leave early because two of my friends got nauseous from all jerky camera shots.
I get crap for this, but Cloverfield is my favorite movie of all-time.
Heck the pre release to the movie was more immersive than most movies ever made
I just watched it again the other day, and while not brilliant character or storywise the found footage monster movie gimmick does still work. I do like the characters even if they're only superficial ones. Hud and Marlana are still standouts, and Rob I guess has an ark. Either way enough is there that I still find it re watchable.
It was a good movie. I wasn't bored. But all the extras made it a great movie at that time.
That in fact was the movie's pitch "Blair Witch Project plus Godzilla, boom."
Uhhhh hell yeah it is. Great movie.
Iconic marketing and hype building
I liked 10 cloverfield lane the most
this is a phenomenal video i learned so much
I would’ve loved if they actually expanded on this universe (and I’m not talking about whatever the hell those other two movies were)
This was a great example of a film where the marketing absolutely surpassed the film itself. I was a big fan of Lost and was REALLY into the whole online promotion of Cloverfield. Then the movie itself was such a goddamn letdown.
Underrated masterpiece movie
The thing about this movie that sticks out to me was the company and armour support column that appeared from fucking no where behind the group and spawns in when the monster appears. 😂
Matt Reeves admitted that the 'satellite' you see falling into the ocean at the end of the movie is actually a meteorite carrying the monster (Clover) and when Clover is destroying the city she's actually confused and looking for her family
Last of us music is an interesting choice for this
They made the statue of liberty head a lot bigger in the final cut
I try to show this to as many people as I can who never heard of it and without telling them it's a monster movie.
Inside a Mind did a great video on the ARG of the movie.
And no direct explanation about the creature's origin, unless you read the viral marketings, ARGs, and filmmaker's commentaries... or *spoilers:*
if you watch The Cloverfield Paradox.
Subscribed when I started hearing the music
I love the first one the third one kinda killed it.
I want them to make a universal ride out this movie it scared the crap out the first time I saw it
Do we think this film could’ve been better had they wrote a script with more complex characters and possibly took a little more time to flesh them out (the film is not even 80 minutes before credits hit).
Personally, I love this film, but I do think they could’ve done better fleshing the characters and performances out. Maybe made it where it’s a husband trying to save his family?
I love the Tears of... song. Gave your video a like just based on that.
One of the best movies ever
I need another cloverfield movie
Cloverfield is my favorite love story
I give this a solid maybe
In theater this movie was fkin intense!
Plus if you're from the nyc area there's an added depth that you know the streets the monster attacks so you can think "oh shit I've been where these people are. What if that happened to me?"
