When I was a kid, I had a clear picture in my head of a cutscene that would play at the end of the game: the train tracks break off at a cliff, the character jumps, grabs a special rope, and rolls down to his house, and the police officer, who is too heavy for the rope, stops and yells angrily after the character. I have no idea where I got that idea, but I believed in it with all my heart.
The devs should make it so that the more he runs. The skinny the inspector becomes and at the end Jake shows him a mirror and then the inspector thanks jake.

As someone with a little bit of development experience I would think that the reason why your points no longer register after that certain point is probably an overflow issue. Most variables have a set length that they can be depending on the language it's coded in, once the game tries to print the number with 1 more digit than it can handle it doesn't know what to do, and breaks. I hear a lot of metroid speed runners use overflow glitches by spamming certain commands in certain areas that already have really long lines of code. I don't know enough about the subject to be certain but at first listen that would be my thought!

Also, even if the game was coded to use more 32 bit registers to hold a larger number you'll probably never reach the point where a single number fills up the memory. Each 2,147,000,000 (rounded) takes up 32 bits, and a GB is 8 million bits. So to fill up a single gigabyte with a number, you'll need to reach 568 quadrillion. 8 Billion divided into 32 bit chunks that are then multiplied by 2,147,000,000 gets us this value. Keep in mind that it took 32 years just to get to about 105 billion (50 cycles of 2,147,000,000). To get to 1 trillion that's 304 years. To get to a quadrillion thats 314,000 years. To finally fill up a GB, you'll need 178 million years of gameplay. Seeing as modern smartphones have anywhere from 8-12 gigs of space, and the fact that this is the most inefficient way to store large numbers, you really could have the game go on effectively forever if the only limitation was a really large number.

Your answer was right but your reasoning was wrong. The numbers simply continued to overflow back and forth until a hardcoded limit where the game just stops trying but still continues without crashing. Also, even if the game was coded to use more 32 bit registers to hold a larger number you'll probably never reach the point where a single number fills up the memory. Each 2,147,000,000 (rounded) takes up 32 bits, and a GB is 8 million bits. So to fill up a single gigabyte with a number, you'll need to reach 568 quadrillion. 8 Billion divided into 32 bit chunks that are then multiplied by 2,147,000,000 gets us this value.
Keep in mind that it took 32 years just to get to about 105 billion (50 cycles of 2,147,000,000). To get to 1 trillion that's 304 years. To get to a quadrillion thats 314,000 years. To finally fill up a GB, you'll need 178 million years of gameplay. Seeing as modern smartphones have anywhere from 8-12 gigs of space, and the fact that this is the most inefficient way to store large numbers, you really could have the game go on effectively forever if the only limitation was a really large number.
