More "Side of the Fridge" recipes please!! If you added chopped pecans to Aunt Eileen's cake you would have my Aunt Peggy's Sour Cream cake. Great video!
Hey Glen, my father introduced me to your channel sometime during the pandemic. We’d always come home from church on sundays and watch Sunday morning and the old cookbook shows. He passed away this year and every time I watch I always think of him. Thanks Glen for your videos
I concur, a Recipes from the side of the fridge series would be a great way for the viewer to gain a personal connection with Glen and Julie with the added benefit of you being able to eat your favourite treats again. Cheers from Australia
I made this on Sunday for a family dinner and again Monday for a potluck. Both times it was excellent! The second time I added chopped pecans. Yummy! You neglected to mention how good the kitchen smells when it's baking.
@@mikezimmermann89 Unfortunately, I still have a Harvest Gold bath tub. I just hide it with the shower curtain. Although I did change the Harvest Gold toilet and bathroom sink with white. I also had an Avocado kitchen sink that was only 8'" deep. WTF am I supposed to do with that? Replaced with a double stainless kitchen sink of a proper size.
@@mikezimmermann89When my husband and I married in 73, we bought our harvest gold appliances through our Sears catalog store. Electric range, refrigerator, washer and dryer, on sale for $1000. They all lasted for more than 20 years. 51 years later, I'm on my 2nd range, washer and dryer, and 3rd fridge. All in black or stainless or white.😂
Helen Rennie just did a vid on how to properly cream butter and sugar. She said with her equipment it’s about 8 minutes I think. She went all out explaining it too, with food coloring so u can c!
How funny about the recipes on the side of the refrigerator! I took down a stack held together with a paper binder a couple of months ago. They were starting to fade from the sun. 😊 That would be a cute title for a cookbook "Recipe Collection from The Side of The Refrigerator." I just finished copying the recipe. I love this because it just has basic ingredients that you don't have to search Amazon for. Thank you.
I thought, not enough spices! So I added in a bit of nutmeg and a bit of clove powder. And I had leftover coffee so added in a tiny bit as well. And didn’t have chocolate chips, so substituted for chopped walnuts. SO DELICIOUS!!
I made a very similar cake to this-I followed a basic spice cake recipe and added miniature chocolate chips in the batter. I glazed the top with the leftover chips melted with coffee and some cinnamon. It was delightful.
That cake looks really good! I just put together a family cook book for my children and found my grandmother's sour cream cake. Hers does not include the chocolate chips but is also very good. Thank you so much for this wonderful channel.
I am also joining the call for more of the recipes you and Julie really enjoy eating. Especially as Julie always wants more vegetables, and I tend to agree with her.
Sour cream is magic - I use creme fraiche for everything (what I think might be our direct equivalent to sour cream breaks when heated, but creme fraiche is perfect). It's great in cakes (it makes a brutally good chocolate bundt cake), it great for dips, it great to dollop on to a stew or soup, it's an instant sauce (just fry up a protein and some veggies or whatever, season however you like, dump some creme fraiche on and you've got dinner)... I'm definitely trying this cake and hopefully adding it to my creme fraiche repertoire soon 👍
yes...that definitely looks like a "more" cake! "side of the fridge" recipes are the best...looking at all the comments, i'd say we all agree we need "more" of those as well 😁
This is the kind of recipe I LOVE LOVE LOVE--something that people actually make and eat. It looks and sounds delicious. If you absolutely had to make it seem "formal," you could bake it in a bundt pan.
Wow, I didn't know anybody else left their favorite recipes hanging in the kitchen! This makes me happy! Thank you! I look forward to seeing more of these!
My caregiver and I made two of these over a month ago. It was delicious, even though I used non-fat Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. Although we did "do a Julie" and didn't measure the chocolate chips. As delicious as it was, it would have been a lot better with more chocolate chips.
i’ve not heard “moorish” in the wild before! my late mother picked it up from an agatha christie book when i was young, and i still use and love it. that cake does look very moorish!
That looks amazing and something that would be great to “just throw something together” kind of treat. I know we aren’t supposed to have favorites…but Aunt Eileen is now my favorite Aunt!!!!
Hi Glen! (and Jules) Been watching your videos for a while now, and this is one of my favourite youtube channels, mainly because it is still the "slow tv" side of youtube. The fast paced, adrenaline filled editing of modern youtube is not my cup of tea. So thank you for making awesome videos. One question about the sour cream you use here: Is it full fat sour cream? so 36% fat or something else? Thank you so much. And kind regards from Iceland, Þórður
I loved how enthusiastic you both were. It's clear you guys were stoked for this cake. I'd definitely like to see a few more of these recipes, since they're clearly your favourites!
I made this yesterday. I added 1/4 tsp. table salt and 1 tsp. of vanilla. It was really good and resembled a coffee cake in taste. I baked for 28 min. at 350F. It was a bit dry but my oven is a bit fast. If I make it again I will start at 25 minutes. We went to some friends’ house for dinner and they liked it also. I would put even more chocolate chips on top!
My mom used to bake with heavy sour cream all the time... that was farm fresh sour cream.. not store bought, but I imagine that they would be very similar in cakes.. she used to make a sour cream and raisin pie that is still one of my favourites
Aunt Eileen’s cake is wonderful! I’ve made it three times already and no one could stop eating it. I wouldn’t recommend the reverse creaming method for this recipe. The creaming method gives you the lift. When you add the flour and sour cream, don’t over beat it. I tried it both ways. Do it Glen’s way 🙂
Growing up every new years day we'd go to the family party at my uncles house, guess it's a French Canadian thing, anyway these were always there and I never knew who brought them but they were so good that and the rice crispies squares 😅only ever had them once a year
I'd suggest 1/4-1/2 tsp salt (depending on salted butter or not), not 1 tsp for the quantity of flour and sugar and butter in this recipe. If you go to 1 tsp I'd expect it to actually start tasting salty. One time I made banana bread without the 1/2 tsp salt the recipe called for and the taste was so comparatively dull to what I was used to that I instantly knew that I'd forgotten an ingredient. The salt from your butter in this recipe probably prevents that from being the case. I bet if you made it with unsalted butter you would notice the difference.
Thank you! My daddy (1920 - 1996) loves what he called “Vinegar Pie”, a recipe his mother used to make. It didn’t have berries or fruit in it. She just baked it in a bowl. Have you run across a recipe like this?

Aunt Eileen seems to have been a genuine treasure, as is her cake.
For anyone who wants to see Julie's video, it's called "Cinnamon Sour Cream Cake Recipe". It was made 14 years ago!

I love these types of videos! Not your standard recipes that everybody does and also teaches us about different methods. Great stuff!
This is a good basic cake recipe. I might try nutmeg instead of cinnamon and add nuts or coconut to the batter. The possibilities are endless.
I love tried and true family recipes. They are usually simple, economical and taste great. Thank-you Aunt Eileen and of course Glen.
