I notice the costume greatly resembles a Shinto "shrine maiden" Miko, implying a spiritual quality and inspiration to the performance. Truly a unique cultural gift Japan has shared with the world. Thank you Japan.
This is shodou, a competitive art. Many different signs can make up the same meaning. Teams from different high schools and universities compete. The object is to make the most "poetic" rendering of a phrase. Different kanji, different sizes of letters and coarseness of brush and also even colors go into the creation. I thank you two for supporting Japanese culture. As you know, Chinese characters and shodou were introduced from China to Japan around the 6th century. Each has evolved uniquely in Japan. In recent years, the evolution of this shodou performance. Centered on Japanese high school students, has been entertaining us. High school students are working hard on club activities with the goal of 'National High School Shodou-Performance Championship'.
