    Awesome! I had this exact project in mind (minus the wifi control) for the past week after printing lots of lithophanes and trying to figure out a clean way to light them up. Crazy that you made it while I was pondering haha saves me the frustrations of designing from scratch. My plan is to use an Arduino nano and a servo modified to turn 360 degrees (eliminates the stepper driver requirement) with potentiometers to adjust the speed/direction and color. Studying your sketch will help me get there much easier. Purchased the files before I even watched the video. Many, many thanks for sharing this Joseph! Imagine all the smiles you just helped to bring out. Any chance you could share your source file for the base so I can modify it to fit a servo?

    Adafruit_NeoPixel pixels = Adafruit_NeoPixel(NUMPIXELS, PIN, NEO_GRBW + NEO_KHZ800);
    instead of

    Come on Joe! Don't push yourself down like that. You are the archetypical noob and therefore you will always "still be learning", but this is great. Really great! And the code is simple and functional. Much better than what you make it sound like!
    One thing I would like in the code though, is some comments. Just throw a few "// This part does this", "// Change this to do this" and "// Enter credentials here" and it will be even better!

    • @3DMakerNoob
      @3DMakerNoob  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very good point, to be completely honest if it weren’t for those comments I wouldn’t have learned anything so completely agree to leave them there. And thank you very much buddy

  • @edwardboston8600
    @edwardboston8600 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Didn't have time to go through all the comments to see if it was mentioned, but for your ESP based projects, look into the WiFiManager library. It handles generating an AP for the initial wifi configuration and connecting in STA mode after that. I have used it in a couple projects I have done. As for the functionality that Blynk (?) provides, you would have to write your own web page to do this. But for something this simple, that shouldn't be too difficult.

    This is really great work. Everything printed and fit together perfectly. Just waiting on all the hardware now, so I can assemble completely. One quick question.... Does the app always have to be open in order for the lamp to run or will it run by just turning on the power switch without using the app every time?

  • @markferrick10

    An excellent tutorial involving both my favorite hobbies. Very nice work. Thank you for the time it took to do this project and presenting it to us. As a side note, how much torque is in that motor? Is it strong or does it barely move the turntable. I am thinking of using that in a different project that need some torque. Thanks

    • @3DMakerNoob

    One thing to think about... I use the steel filament frequently and it has some pretty interesting thermal properties. It absorbs and transmits heat extremely easily. I'm not sure about conductive properties, I know it's not considered conductive, but it doesn't seem like the best idea to use around electronics something that is comprised of 30% metal powder.

    • @3DMakerNoob
      @3DMakerNoob  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve done a lot of testing, it’s not conductive At all, made sure of that hehe :)

    Need a bit of clarification. I'm not using the step down converter. at 6:50 in the video Joe says to connect the wires to the dc jack and the switch so take all 4 wires (2 from Led +5v and 1 from the dc jack and 1 from the switch ) and solder them all together? Then do the same with the ground wires? If so which wires go to the + and - on the stepper driver?

    Is there a way to make this same thing without programming it? I want to make something similar to this for my girlfriend for Christmas but I don't want her to have to use her phone to control it. It doesn't have to change colors or anything. Just one main "power on/power off" switch and a dimmer switch to control the brightness of the light. Is there an easy way to wire the LED's into a 120V system? The motor that I have is meant to run on 120V (as well as the switches I have). Can I use a step down converter right from the wall outlet plug in order to get the correct voltage to the LED's?

    You design is fantastic. I bought it and going to make a night lamp with family photos. I have nearly all components in my drawers. Waiting for the missing components and white filament. Thank you. :)
    But the software can be better. What's the meaning of using NeoPixels if you are not using the color effects and lighting all the pixels the same color you can use cheaper RGB Led Strips and use PWM on three pins to light and mix the colors. You can also put a new slider for brightness instead of a constant brightness.
    I'll share the source code if i improve it. ;)

  • @anthonyz7192

    How would you do this without the Wemos? I'm very new to programming. I'm more of an analog kinda guy. So I don't totally understand how the stepper driver works, but is that something that a program is uploaded to? So the Wemos actually runs the stepper driver, and the stepper driver can't run without something like the Wemos/Arduino? I would love to make something simpler, ie flick the switch and everything turns on.

    I tried a ESP8266 clone on your last lamp project and it had a hard time running the lights. From my web search I gathered it was due to the ESP being 3.3v logic and the light data wanting 5v. Some showed using a level shifter. Just curious if you ran into this at all or if maybe the lights you bought are just better at dealing with a lower logic level.

    I like the idea and video but i would prefer a version of this that doesn't involve WiFi or phone connectivity, registering on apps and so on. I don't like using my mobile for things like that. Just a couple of simple switches for light on-off and motor on-off and maybe a potentiometer to adjust the speed of the motor and/or direction that it rotates. Also the programming of the Arduino made more simplified via cable connection to a pc.

    Wouldn't this be underpowered from the PSU linked in the description? That is only a 2a supply but if one meter of LEDs are used at 60 LED/meter and a current draw of 0.06 amp/LED for these this style, we are already at 3.6 amps.

    Any updates to use the new Blynk app?

  • @balls2bone
    @balls2bone 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    @3DMN You considered adding a brightness control? An extra slider in the app with a range of 0 to 1 in say 0.1 steps (not used blynk, may not be posibble), then multiply the values for each colour by the value from slider to give variable brightness.
    As I say, I don't use Blynk, I mostly just use MQTT. So you may need to make slider do 0 - 10, in which case do something along these lines...
    BLYNK_WRITE(V2)
    {
    int R = param[0].asInt();
    int G = param[1].asInt();
    int B = param[2].asInt();
    // I added the following lines...
    int Br = param[3].asInt();
    R = R * (Br/10.0);
    G = G * (Br/10.0);
    B = B * (Br/10.0);
    // End of the lines I added.
    for (int i = 0; i < NUMPIXELS; i++)
    {
    pixels.setPixelColor(i, pixels.Color(R, G, B));
    pixels.show();
    }
    }
    This'll give you 10 steps of brightness, including off and fully on.
    Anyhow, this is just a suggestion, thought you may be interested and should not be construed as criticism in any way, shape or form.

      Got anything working on this yet? Just started printing the lamp today. Brightness would be good to add to it.

    Great project, I’ve reached to the last steps.
    But I’m getting an error while uploading the sketch “hard resetting via RTS pin” then it will reset my wemos.
    I’ve tried to google it and etc. but no luck until now.

      Thats just the last part of the upload. I got that too, but it uploaded. I don't think it's actually resetting it.

    I had a very difficult time getting this project to work. It is only partially working. Here were the problems.
    1. When plugging in the arduino to program it, usb failed and blue screened my windows 10 computer.
    2. RE booted computer (Which is dual boot) into Ubuntu Linux 18. That would not recognize the board at all.
    3. Next tried win xp computer, got compile errors.
    4. Took unit to friends place that has a completely working one. Neither of his computers would recognize either of the units (Have 2 boards)
    5. Tried plugging in my friends board to verify the electronics. Stepper worked properly, led strip did not light up the same. Only the first 45 leds lit up and they did not light up the same way. Every third led lit the same with a repeating pattern. The only way they lit the same was selecting all white.
    5. Thinking they were from a bad batch, I tried to re-program the board to generate the error message to use as a return reason thinking they were defective. This time the program actually uploaded, the stepper works and the leds light up incorrectly as with my friends board. Only the first 45 leds the last 15 were off. (Measured 5v at end of light string where they were turned off) Still scratching my head....

    It would be really really cool if you could do a new video explaining how to do it with the new Blynk app, i am sitting on that for month but i dont get anything done. This video is not working with anything in the new app, authentition token is not send via email anymore but more important there are no options for choosing the pins anynmore and so on.
