Holy cow, Chuck Chromi! Chuck took several of us on tour all over Florida after the national championships in 1976! We did it to promote use of safety equipment in the parks after several serious injuries threatened to close those parks down. What a blast from the past!!
That Freestyle Skatepark in Gaithersburg(DC Suburb) was open only one year in 1977. That big wall that kid ate shit on was where I learned to carve frontside. this is incredible!
I was there when they filmed this clip. Didn’t see the kid eat it but heard the other skaters react to it. Was hoping I made it into the clip not no luck
@@juansaladzar been sk8ing for 47yrs, have cancer now. Doctor told me to stop sk8ing, don't go to that doctor anymore. Skateboarding is fucking awesome. Our crew would of fucked you up. Brah no lie.
@indyfan22k Yes. The liability insurance alone was extremely expensive for the private parks, and in the case of many severe injuries, the insurance wasn't enough and lawsuits ensued. This, combined with the skyrocketing price of land in the late 70's early 80's (at least in SoCal) was all it took for many park owners to sell the land and get out of the business entirely....and just like that skateboarding was back out into the streets.
@GregNoll61 Over the last 10 years some municipality have built skateparks to keep the skaters off the streets. I just read that Atlanta opened one last weekend. Private skate parks have probably been hit hard by this recession. I know of a few that opened in the late 90s and early 2000s and are sadly not around now.
I am from that era and it is so weird how technology changed so quickly. I was lucky enough to have skated threw all of it.
whoever came up with idea to video tape kids skate boarding and sell it on vhs was a genius

Jane Pauley
Skatopia in Buena Park CA was closed and dozed back in the late 70s. It wasn’t too far from Knotts Berry Farm and Disneyland.
Damn, what was with the gardening gloves back then??
Best thing they had
Como todavia se usaban cascos que protegian tanto, con eso te das un cabezazo y te rompes la cabeza igualmente.
I wish they'd bring these back, no wonder Kids get stuck inside playing video games all day. There's not a whole lot for them to do.
The US has way more skate parks today than there were in the 70s. Most are free public parks as well.
@@mattc5937But not good…
@indyfan22k Jane Pauley is her name, I'm guessing this was from The Today Show.
Insurance companies killed the concrete parks of the 70's.
he probably said "are you ok" No one said "Jacked" back then
Hell yah, Scott Starr!!!
Skateboarding was never about money, this news story misses the mark completely
overly radical skateboarder lmao
That was one of the best sentences I've heard in ages
listened to it again. And its defineately "he got jacked" also "are you ok" is heard
Skateboard businessmen.
I'm out.
I realize that they have to make money, but business sounds wrong.
90% were terrible skaters .
You can hear a kid at the end saying "he got jacked"!
Damn, that kid slammed at the end!
